David’s mom is David’s mother, the parent he still calls “Mommy” in high school. Her one substantial main-comic scene, in Onwards to Adventure, has her bring David home after an accidental kidnapping, arrange the apology he owes and then carry on with his birthday dinner as though this is merely an unusually busy parenting day.

Personality

A hand on David’s back does not mean his troubles are being excused.

David’s mom is warm without being permissive. The comic introduces her cheerfully greeting David while he fries eggs still in their shells, reminding him to get to school on time and refusing his request for a birthday day off with the promise of a big dinner instead.[1] When his birthday adventure ends with police involvement, she brings him home with a hand on his back and takes his tearful insistence that he did not mean to kidnap anybody at face value. She still makes him apologize to the boy in the Hospital — “After the restraining order expires” — before coaxing him out of his pout with the promised meal.[2]

Feeding people is her other reflex. David’s “big” birthday dinner is a platter of hot dogs with a lit sparkler in one, and when Lucy, Paulo and Mike arrive she immediately tells David to invite them in.[2] Leaving Home later puts a pink-frosted cake in front of a miserable David with his mother’s hand resting on his head; Veronica’s commentary explains that she bakes cakes for every occasion.[3] In Everyday Life, she serves him an enormous breakfast in bed.[4]

Appearance

Leaving Home offers David comfort in the smallest possible glimpse of his mother.

David’s mom is a floppy-eared dog whose early appearances deliberately give very little visual detail. On her debut page she passes behind David as a dark silhouette.[1] By the end of the same chapter her face and ears are visible, though the scene keeps the simple pink palette used for David and his mother.[2] Invitation mostly shows her from behind as she walks beside David,[5] and Leaving Home reduces her appearance to a comforting hand on his head.[3]

New Year’s Resolution gives the clearest later view: a dark-furred older dog in a blue top sitting close to Rodrigo while they talk and laugh.[6] The BCI strips Family Comix and Ships Ahoy, Season Three return to the silhouette gag when she appears with Rodrigo.[7][8]

Significant events

David’s mom debuts on David’s birthday in Onwards to Adventure, during his freshman year. She tells him to get to school on time and leaves for the day despite his protest that a birthday ought to earn him time off.[1] By evening, David’s attempt to rescue the Flower girl has ended with a kidnapped seven-year-old, the police and a restraining order. His mother brings him home, insists that he apologize when he is allowed to visit the boy in hospital, and then has his friends join the promised birthday dinner.[2]

Her remaining main-comic appearances are brief. In Invitation, she walks beside David while he carries several shopping bags and reads Tess’s invitation to the Silvershore trip.[5] In Leaving Home, after Lucy leaves Roseville, she rests a hand on David’s head while he stares glumly at a cake.[3] By New Year’s Resolution she is at the New Year’s Eve party at Mike’s house, talking and laughing with Rodrigo while David tries to convince Paulo that their parents are “meant to be”.[6]

Major relationships

David

David is emphatic about who deserves the family superlative in Mother’s Day.

David is loudly devoted to a mother who quietly keeps looking after him. He calls her “Mommy” in high school,[1] and a Mother’s Day flashback to fifth grade explains why. David says his father went away when he was a baby. His mother therefore gets cards on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, and David declares that she is “the BEST” and asks why he should miss his dad when his mom is so awesome.[9][10]

She knows exactly what sort of son she has. When David sobs that he never meant to kidnap anybody, she answers, “I know. You just wanted to see your little girlfriend, like always..”, before moving on to the apology and dinner.[2] Fifth-grade David is already volunteering her baking on other people’s behalf, offering to have her make an extra tray so Paulo and his father have something for a school sale.[10] And when Lucy leaves town years later, it is his mother’s hand on his head while he sits in front of the cake she made.[3]

Minor relationships

Rodrigo

David has long decided that his mom and Paulo’s father Rodrigo belong together. The main comic gives him some material to work with: in New Year’s Resolution the two parents sit close together, talking and laughing, while David points them out to Paulo and Paulo groans.[6] Veronica has since clarified that they are not a couple, but “certainly” get along and interact often because their sons are best friends; in the current story they are just friends.[11]

BCI makes David’s matchmaking into a recurring joke. In Family Comix he tells Paulo that parent-teacher conferences let him pretend their parents are married,[7] while Ships Ahoy, Season Three has David’s mom thank Rodrigo for years of letting “Davie” stay over and start to suggest a drink before David interrupts with “GET MARRIED”.[8]
