Lucas is a bright yellow, spiky-furred cat on the Roseville High School track team, and the member most likely to ask whether everyone could please get on with it. When James is pitching a recruit, balancing milk cartons on his nose, or having feelings in the middle of practice, Lucas is the one losing patience. He drifts into Mike’s story mostly by accident, and he might be the only person on the team who still remembers what practice is for.

Personality

Lucas came to run, and preferably to eat afterwards. Whenever the track team gets sidetracked, Lucas is the one wondering aloud why. That covers James recruiting, the whole team gossiping about Paulo and Daisy, and a shopping trip that refuses to end. He isn’t a grump exactly. He grins plenty with his teammates and lights right up at an arcade racer or a fresh pizza. He just keeps a very short list of things worth his time, and other people’s love lives make the list only until somebody actually gets hurt.

Lucas has a question, and very little patience for the answer taking this long.

Lucas wants nearly everything hurried along. His very first line in the comic is an interruption, cutting off James’s rambling recruitment speech to ask whether Mike is joining or not.[1] He agrees to Mike’s arcade detour in Link Play only on the condition that it not take forever, because he is getting hungry,[2] and he leaves it slumped over and wailing that he is “STARVING”.[3] He goes along with the clothes shopping, but by the time the others are waiting on a bench, he has his attention firmly on his phone.[4][5]

Lucas would like one practice session without a subplot.

Lucas also keeps trying to drag the team back to the actual sport. In Second String, with the coach away and David screaming about Paulo and Daisy getting married, Lucas scowls and asks, “Aren’t we supposed to be training?”[6] He then vents to Max that he is apparently the only one who cares why they are all there.[7] The competitiveness carries over to games, too. He calls the others over before anyone can take the spare seats at the racing cabinet, then grips the wheel with a competitive grimace even as he trails in fourth.[8][9]

For all that, Lucas is a bit of a gossip with no stomach for the fallout. He is quick to quiz James about Paulo’s jealousy over a certain date with Mike, but the moment Felix says something that actually lands, Lucas turns and physically runs off.[10] In First-Degree Burn he watches Mike from the team table with obvious concern and says nothing at all,[11] and his response to Mike slamming Paulo face-first into a lunch table is a raised eyebrow and a flat “.. Okay.”[12]

Appearance

Lucas is a bright yellow cat with spiky fur.[1] At practice he wears the blue running uniform of the Roseville High Hornets along with the rest of the team.[13] He has a habit of slinging one arm over the back of whatever chair he is sitting in. The pose turns up at the cafeteria table at his debut, in the arcade racing seat, and at the team table in Line in the Sand.[1][8][14] When he complains at practice, he puts a hand on his hip,[15][6] and at the mall he scrolls on his phone when bored.[5]

Veronica has said that James and Lucas were the two track-team designs she already had in mind, while the rest of the team was built from cat and dog breeds she looked up for inspiration.[16]

Significant events

Before Mike joins the team, Lucas is already enduring James’s milk-carton act at lunch. The flashbacks in One-Track Mind also show him watching Mike slam Paulo face-first into a lunch table.[12] He makes his published debut in Track Meet, hurrying James’s recruitment pitch along and, when James admits the whole team talks about Mike, shouting him down along with everyone else.[1][17] He then stands with the team in uniform to welcome Mike to the gym.[13]

In Link Play he tags along on a Christmas-shopping trip to the mall with James, Felix, Finn and Mike.[18] He spots a row of formula-one machines with enough seats for everyone,[19] and calls Mike and James over to a cabinet where Lucy has already taken a seat.[8] By the time they leave, he is more than ready for Fiesta Pizza.[3]

Second String finds the team at practice with the coach away. Lucas notices that Paulo and Daisy have skipped their usual spot on the bleachers, and he is startled to hear the two have fallen for each other.[15] He gets curious about James’s love life, then makes himself scarce when the conversation turns sour.[10] As David shouts the news, Lucas is left protesting that nobody is training, until Mike asks to be timed.[6][7] He has no lines in First-Degree Burn, where he watches Mike’s troubles from the team table,[11] or in Line in the Sand, where he chats with Darwin at the team’s own table while James challenges Lucy to a race.[14]

James

Lucas has watched James balance milk cartons on his nose for three lunch periods running and would like it to stop, in One-Track Mind.

Lucas ends up as James’s resident straight man, whether he applied for the job or not. He is the first to interrupt James’s recruitment pitch in Track Meet,[1] and he is part of the four-voice chorus of “Don’t tell him that!!” when James cheerfully spills the team’s gossip about Mike.[17] In the earlier flashback in One-Track Mind, he tells James, cheek in hand and eyes rolled, that three lunch periods of the milk-carton trick is quite enough.[12]

Lucas’s eye-rolling does not stop him from including James in the arcade race in Link Play. He calls James over to the six-seater,[8] but once James is busy cheering for Mike instead of driving, Lucas has to shout at him to “pay attention!” to his own final lap.[20] When James laments his last place, Lucas smirks that it is “gonna stay that way”.[20] Veronica’s commentary says Lucas may not be playing all that well, but at least he knows he can beat James, and not finishing last is a fine participation trophy.[20]

Lucas is nosy about James’s love life only for as long as it stays fun. In Second String he asks James straight out whether Paulo used to like him and whether Paulo was jealous over James’s date with Mike,[10] but when Felix calls James exhausting and James goes quiet, Lucas flushes and bolts.[10] He is back among the team a page later, watching James’s theatrical meltdown at Felix with the same flat look as everyone else. Veronica notes the whole team is used to it by now.[21]

Mike

Mike’s arrival on the team runs straight through Lucas’s impatience. Lucas’s debut line, “Dude, is he joining or what?”, is asked from the next table while James is still warming up,[1] and he is one of the teammates who has been talking about Mike behind his back.[17] He is among the uniformed team welcoming Mike to the gym,[13] and he greets him with a grin when he turns up for the mall trip in Link Play.[18] Lucas is friendly with Mike, but leaves the deeper conversations to the others.

Lucas is happy to include Mike in the group’s plans. He puts up with Mike’s arcade detour,[2] and calls him over to the six-seat racer, where Lucy’s presence leaves Mike visibly uncomfortable.[8][22] Mike still counts Lucas among the smiling teammates he pictures to calm himself to sleep that night.[23] In Second String, after all his complaining about nobody training, Lucas is the one who answers Mike’s “Time me” with a slightly surprised “Oh. Okay!”[7] He watches Mike with real concern from the team table in First-Degree Burn, though the actual invitation to sit down comes from Finn.[11] When James later tells Paulo that Mike can still hang out with Finn and the others, Lucas is one of those others, and the offer is still sitting there.[24]

Minor relationships

Finn

Lucas and Finn are easy company for each other. The two walk into the mall in Link Play chatting and grinning at one another,[25] and when Lucas staggers out of the arcade wailing about hunger, Finn is the one who agrees.[3] They also share an awkward sweat in First-Degree Burn when Felix gets a bit too blunt about James.[11]

Felix

Lucas enjoys Felix’s company right up to the point where Felix’s mouth turns on James. Felix watches Lucas’s starving dramatics with plain amusement, and the pair sit beside each other at Fiesta Pizza gazing at the food like it owes them money.[3][26] When Felix’s jab at James actually wounds him, though, Lucas cannot stick around for the conversation,[10] and he gives Felix an unimpressed look when Felix trashes James in front of Mike.[11]
