John is a bespectacled cat in Mike’s year at Roseville High School, and a fixture of the back row, the gym-class sideline and the edge of whatever crowd the main cast happens to be standing in. He rarely pushes his way out of the background; his clearest contribution to the conversation is an enthusiastic opinion about Christmas carols.
Personality
John hums his way down the freshman hallway, dozes off on his hand at the back of homeroom, and watches dodgeball from behind David, usually as calmly as he entered the panel.[1][2][3] When he does show obvious emotion, it tends to be cheerful: he blushes happily over a freshly signed yearbook,[4] or lights up over carolers at a Christmas party.

At Tess’s Christmas party in Feline Festivities, carolers turn up outside and John, in a Christmas sweater, announces “I love Christmas carols!” right as Mike steps between him and Stacy to get to the window.[5]
Appearance

John is a cat with short hair and a pair of large round glasses; the glasses are his most dependable identifying feature from middle school onward.[4][1] His few outfit details are situational: a Christmas sweater at Tess’s party,[5] and a backpack worn with both hands on the straps in Third Wheel.[6]
Significant events
John first appears among the students in the Roseville Middle School hallway during Mike’s escape attempt in Pep Rally, and turns up again in the crowd around Mike’s “pimp” rant in Puppy Love.[7][8] On the last day of eighth grade, Lucy signs his yearbook in Farewell, Middle School.[4] Freshman year opens with him humming past Katie and Stacy in Humble Approach,[1] and that winter he turns up at Tess’s Christmas party in Feline Festivities.[5]
In sophomore year he falls asleep in homeroom in Pillow Talk.[2] By junior year he is a gym-class spectator in Model Girlfriend and Unspoken Rule.[9][3] As a senior he stands outside school in Third Wheel while Daisy and Paulo set their “just classmates” rule nearby.[6]
Major relationships
Lucy
John’s only direct interaction with Lucy is a tiny one-sided gag. On the last day of middle school in Farewell, Middle School, she signs his yearbook and hands it back with a flat “Here.”[4] John blushes happily over it while Lucy looks at him blankly. Years later they share the gym in Unspoken Rule, but John is only a neutral background face behind David.[3]
Minor relationships
Mr. Noodles pairs John with a classmate named Cheryl for the World War II essay in December.[10]

Trivia
- John is one of the attendees of Sue’s club in Out of the Frame, which is for characters who “tend to remain in the background or are generally forgotten”. Veronica’s commentary explains that the revamped chapter replaced old fan-characters with official minor characters; John is among the minor characters used in the new version.[11]
- Although he is tagged on-panel as early as Pep Rally, John is first named in Farewell, Middle School, and his first clearly attributed line comes later in Feline Festivities.[7][4][5]
