David is a big brown dog and Paulo’s best friend since fifth grade. Discouraging him almost never works. He is the friend group’s resident agent of chaos, a boy who celebrates his fourteenth birthday by accidentally becoming a televised kidnapper. Every so often, though, he proves to be the sharpest observer at the lunch table, which lately has been very bad news for Mike.

Personality

David’s goodest-boy routine survives another successful intervention in Line in the Sand.

David is a lot of noise to be around. He greets people by tackling them, announces his plans loudly, and treats an ordinary lunch period like the opening scene of an anime. He is also enormous, so the tackles carry some weight. Underneath the racket, David wants two things pretty badly: for his friends to stay exactly the way he loves them, and for somebody to call him a good boy afterward. He is a thoroughly spoiled mama’s boy, a shipper who cheers in public, and a self-appointed protagonist who is occasionally right about everyone at the table. The problem is that he says the right thing at the wrong volume, and the wrong thing however he says it.

David takes very little of what happens to him as bad news. He starts his fourteenth birthday by frying eggs still in their shells,[1] and after that same day ends with a police standoff and a restraining order, his reaction to learning he made the national news is “Wow, my birthday’s THAT important?”[2] A promised beach day in the middle of summer has him hollering about the best Christmas ever,[3] and landing in the AP class after starting out in English I gets compared, by him, to a phoenix rising.[4] He beams from the back seat while a furious Daisy shakes him,[5] and when he lets out a full-page scream in Second String, James can’t tell whether he is heartbroken or thrilled. Mike, who has known him longer, confirms it is the second one.[6]

David’s solution to a kidnapping is a teleport, naturally.

Much of that cheer comes from the fact that David is rarely living in the same story as everybody else. His birthday truancy became a secret-agent mission under the code name Sergeant Rainpop, complete with stealth mode, a seven-year-old sidekick, and a teleport onto a rooftop.[7][8] Veronica’s commentary on that chapter says he imagines all of his friends in specific roles for the fanfics running in his head.[7] That explains a lot about Augustus, who was assigned the names Sephiroth and Melfice on sight and has been Final Fantasy Cat ever since.[7][2] Paulo’s love life got narrated to him as a fairytale about two kingdoms.[9] David only joins the track team because his commitment to video games and comics isn’t officially recognized by the school, and because the whole thing might turn out like one of his sports animes.[10][11] Veronica has said the same thing more plainly: David wants to be the protagonist, and he knows the tropes.[11]

None of the lowbrow enthusiasms have kept David out of the honors classroom. His English I teacher spent the last day of freshman year promising the class a downgrade to picture books, and David was already holding the slip that put him into CP English II.[12] By junior year he is lounging across a desk in the AP room, and it falls to Abbey to ask how the boy from English I got there.[4] He argues like it too, when the subject interests him. At the lunch table in Participation Trophy he calls Jessica’s play “an ambitious, noble (if melodramatic) encapsulation of teenage life”, holds that the best fiction comes out of the author’s own experience, and tells Rachel that her crass comic-relief part was the thing that exposed the play’s villain.[13]

David celebrates the shipwreck before checking whether anyone aboard is still grieving.

He turns the same attention on his friends. He noticed that Lucy was actually happy around Paulo and pressed him about it.[14] He worked out Paulo’s feelings for Daisy long before Paulo would say them, and he dismantled every excuse with the calm logic of a lawyer.[15] When Daisy was a wreck over Abbey, he skipped the comforting and asked whether she even loved him. Paulo said they were too young for Abbey to expect love, so David reminded him, “You said you’d marry Lucy.”[16] He catches the subtext in Augustus’s film talk,[17] and his seating plan finally got Augustus socializing with the friends Lucy had wanted him to meet for months.[18]

Of course, whatever David notices tends to come straight out of his mouth, whether or not anyone wants to hear it. When Sue fondly recalled how much Lucy loved parties, David corrected her with a flat “She hated them,”[19] then announced he’d heard Lucy had died. He couldn’t understand the glares, since he thought they were all comparing rumors.[20] On learning Tess had turned eighteen, he asked Paulo whether he’d like to report her to the police.[21] He exposed Jessica’s old crush on Lucy to Madison in the middle of an insult,[22] and he greeted Abbey dumping Daisy with a cheer about the worst ship sinking.[23] Even his apologies come out backwards, as Sue found out when he said sorry for thinking her play sucked.[24]

David’s disasters have never been entirely harmless. His birthday adventure produced a restraining order and a hospital visit to apologize for.[2] His roughhousing with Paulo cracked the rock bridge that sent Mike and Lucy over the edge,[25][26] and his attempt at rescuing a drowning Mike involved stomping on his hand.[27] His call for an extreme edition of cheerleading practice encouraged Daisy to hop across the rocks, where she twisted her ankle.[28][29] By junior year he is deliberately taking Lucy’s side against Mike,[30] and his cheerful redrawing of the lunch table in Line in the Sand left Mike eating outside on his own. Veronica has confirmed the change is intentional, saying David is now causing chaos that actually affects people rather than remarking from the background, and that the days of Intervention are behind him.[31] David still considers himself the goodest boy.[32]

The thing he cannot laugh off is being left behind. Watching Paulo change into someone who grovels reduced him to tears at a breakfast table,[33] and he will drop a fight he personally started the instant he spots Paulo crying.[34] When he learned Paulo and Daisy had been dating behind his back, his first real question was whether they didn’t trust him.[35] It is a lot of feeling for a boy who used to sling “gay” around as an insult.[36] These days he’ll volunteer to fall in love with Mike for the good of the team without blinking.[11]

Appearance

David’s idea of beachwear remains impressively consistent with his usual policy.

David is a big brown dog, tall and long-legged, with floppy ears.[37] He towers over most of the cast. Mike, losing a footrace to him, complains that David’s legs are longer than his whole torso,[38] Sue has to reach up to grab him by the neck,[39] and he stares straight down at James when the two talk.[40] His fur is shiny enough that Katie spent Field Day trying to learn his secret. Asked what product he uses, David answered “Ovaries,” and later credited rolling in dirt.[41][42]

Like most of the cast he usually wears nothing at all, a policy he takes rather further than his friends. On the Silvershore trip he ran to the beach without trunks and could not understand why anyone expected otherwise, since everyone is like this.[43] When David does dress up, though, he commits. He has borrowed Daisy’s princess crown and earrings.[44] For Mischief Night he went out as a bedsheet ghost, or, as Yashy called it, a zombie table quilt, and then wore the sheet as a billowing scarf to mock Mike.[45][46] Madison’s party in Fair Game got a Sonic the Hedgehog outfit built out of bowling shoes, white gloves and bunched-up socks.[47] For Halloween in Witch Hunt he was Batman, cape flowing, to Paulo’s Joker.[48][49] Veronica has said that once Paulo was going to be the Joker, David simply had to be his Batman.[50] The incentive side story Magic Tricks adds a star-covered cape and a blue top hat to the pile, along with a wand that actually works.[51][52]

Significant events

Middle school

David’s park-bear panic gives Simple Pleasures an unexpectedly athletic ending.

A childhood flashback in Troubled Waters finds David stepping on a drowning Mike’s hand while trying to rescue him.[27] By middle school, the enthusiasm was no better controlled. David turned up in Simple Pleasures wobbling past Lucy on a skateboard beside Paulo, and two pages later he was carrying Paulo bodily out of Roseville Park ahead of the park bears he was sure were coming.[37][53] He sat out Merry Snow Day as a one-dog protest against the tyranny of school,[54] helped Paulo crash Mike and Lucy’s date in Off to the Movies,[55] and confused basketball with volleyball on Field Day but won the final race anyway.[56][42] Eighth grade closed in Farewell, Middle School with a bruised but triumphant return from prom with the Flower girl and a later admission that he and Paulo had been following Mike and Lucy around.[57][58] In Mike’s Birthday he led the Lobster Gang birthday song.[59]

Freshman year

David’s welcome to high school begins with a compliment nobody requested.

High school didn’t slow him down at all, and if anything it gave him more people to bother. He greeted Enter High School with some crude flirting at Tess alongside Paulo,[60] welcomed new boy Abbey in Humble Approach by calling him Mr. Lincoln and staging an assassination,[61][62] and spiked the Christmas punch in Feline Festivities with thorns rather than anything alcoholic.[63]

His spotlight chapter is Onwards to Adventure, the story of his fourteenth birthday. Lucy talked him into skipping school, and David turned the day into a secret-agent mission with seven-year-old Justin as his sidekick, questing after the Flower girl and misreading a kidnapping bulletin on the news as being about her.[64][65][66] The bulletin was about Justin, and the adventure ended on a rooftop with police guns pointed up at David.[8] He came home to a restraining order, a hospital apology to schedule, and Lucy’s news that the Flower girl had transferred schools. His mother put a sparkler in his hot dogs anyway.[2] The year ended on a real high in Moving On, where he tested out of English I into CP English II and went back to gloat at his old teacher.[12]

The summer trip to the Silvershore Islands brought out both his best and his worst. He and Paulo sang Bicycle Race on the plane and accused a smiling Amaya of being a spy,[67][68] and breakfast in Arrival ended with David fleeing the table in tears over what Tess had done to Paulo.[33] In Search and Rescue, their roughhousing cracked the rock bridge and sent Mike and Lucy over the edge. David caught Lucy after Mike threw her up to safety, then later dove in during the search for Mike, only to get reeled in on Mike’s fishing line.[25][26][69][70][71][72] Then came Intervention, where he pried loose Paulo’s feelings for Daisy.[73] Once Daisy turned out to be holding hands with Abbey in Return, Paulo chased him down and accused him of brainwashing.[74][75]

Sophomore year

Mike’s phone becomes David’s least responsible communication channel in Call Waiting.

Much of sophomore year found David working as Paulo’s love-life pit crew, which in Back and Forth meant shoving him bodily at the freshmen and pushing him to chat up Jasmine.[14][76][77] Elsewhere he flirted with Rachel by calling himself adorable,[78] yelled at Jessica and Rachel to make out during a tearful moment,[79] and joined Paulo in getting Mike’s phone confiscated in Call Waiting with a string of crude texts.[80][81] He burst into play rehearsal carrying a sick Lucy in Carry Me,[82] and at Tess’s surprise party in Fade Away he was mostly alarmed to learn she was eighteen.[21]

Lucy leaving the school in Breaking Up hit the group hard.[83][84] At the art gallery in Critical Hit he set off an alarm and took a simulated lethal injection at an exhibit about euthanasia, then quietly produced his own ticket and left Paulo behind.[85][86][87] He tried to make Rachel’s party in Happy Hour double as his fifteenth birthday celebration; while the others compared rumors about Lucy, David repeated one that she had died.[88][20]

He pitched the class a big fat movie in Take Heart and spent the chapter needling Paulo about Daisy.[89][16] On the road trip in Scenic Route he egged Daisy on right before her ankle went and then named the search party for Abbey after a Mario game.[28][90] He hugged Paulo in the hospital in Total Recall[91] and congratulated Tess after her graduation in Class of 2008.[92]

Junior year

The summer before junior year ended at the beach in Golden Hour. David picked a fight with Madison on the night walk and dropped it as soon as he saw Paulo crying. What he said to Paulo afterward sent Paulo running off into the dark, and Paulo’s attempt to talk about it the next day got steamrolled by an ice cream truck in Ice Block.[22][34][93][94]

School resumed in Table for One with David lounging in the AP classroom to Abbey’s disbelief.[4] The side story Everyday Life shows him picking Sue as his hangout partner and distracting Paulo with a Lucy fantasy during an arcade shootout.[95][96] He beaned a dazed Mike with a dodgeball on Paulo’s orders in Model Girlfriend and beat Abbey at the same game without trying,[97][98][99] and he welcomed Lucy back in Love Again and Unspoken Rule.[100][101] In Track Meet he asked Mike for an apology tour of his own, on the grounds that Mike knows what he did.[102]

In Date Night he spotted Mike holding hands with James, declared the James Bowl, and ordered Paulo to race Mike for James’s heart.[103][104] James fell for him instead, and David left the evening a member of the track team.[105][10] He stayed close to Paulo through a rough night at the New Year’s Resolution party,[106] and was soon beating Mike in sprints.[107][108] In Second String he learned from James that Paulo and Daisy were secretly dating, which produced the loudest reaction of the school year,[109] and in Participation Trophy he wounded Sue by publicly gushing over Jessica’s play after having trashed hers.[110]

David sends Augustus away as an old man and calls Lucy a child, with spectacular confidence.

In Line in the Sand, David took charge of who got to sit with whom. When Augustus ordered Mike inside the cafeteria, David reversed the order and talked Lucy back to the lunch table she’d been avoiding, leaving Mike outside on his own.[111][30][112] By the end of the chapter he was calling it the greatest day of his life.[113] His cheerful recap in False Start left Paulo squirming,[114] and in Tickets Please he followed up by turning Sue’s test of intellect into a trivia game with James and Abbey, complete with a question about Danger Throat.[115][116]

Major relationships

Paulo

David’s idea of reassurance remains spectacularly physical in Golden Hour.

Paulo is the sun David orbits, and he has been since the first day they met. The flashback in Mother’s Day shows a small, newly arrived Paulo crying up a tree and a small David pestering him about it, then falling out of the tree trying to climb up after him.[117] Both of them landed outside the principal’s office, where Paulo blurted that his parents were separated and David thought that was pretty cool.[118][119] He settled the matter with the teacher on the spot: “Oh, it’s okay! We’re best friends now!”[120] He has been Paulo’s hype man and wingman ever since, and his occasional therapist too. His masterwork was Intervention. Sent to smack the drama out of a sulking Paulo, he instead sat down and asked what was wrong, then worked through Sue, Katie and Lucy before landing on Daisy. Every objection got knocked down, and a fairytale about two kingdoms finally made Paulo blurt out the truth.[121][122][73][15][123]

Nothing rattles David like Paulo changing. Watching Paulo grovel to Tess at breakfast in Arrival, he burst into tears, screamed that she had ruined his role model, and stormed off, though a promise of sandcastles won him back within two pages.[33][3] Veronica has explained that David hated Tess’s effect on Paulo far more than any idea of Paulo with Mike. She has also said that his early freak-outs over Paulo possibly being gay were homophobia absorbed from Paulo himself, back before David recognized his own crush on Paulo as a crush.[124] He finally said it out loud on the beach in Golden Hour, scooping a crying Paulo up and listing everything he loved about him. Paulo asked when he was ever going to be serious. “I’ve never been more serious in all my life,” David told him, and Paulo fled into the night.[125][126][127][93] Paulo’s try at raising it the next morning got drowned out by an ice cream truck in Ice Block, leaving the confession unanswered.[94][128]

David doesn’t hold the unanswered confession against him. He simply keeps saying it, signing off New Year’s with an I-love-you to his Aibou that left Paulo wailing about how many people had said that to him that night.[129][106] All the same, the partnership has picked up a crack or two lately. Learning from James in Second String that Paulo and Daisy had been dating in secret, David went from a frozen stare to a scream to outrage that the future best man hadn’t been told, and then, quieter, “They don’t trust me?”[40][109][35] He vowed to keep the secret until the end of time, right before he screamed about how in love they were.[130] The real strain is over Mike. After the lunch-table coup in Line in the Sand, David rounded on Paulo for even thinking about Mike when David had personally won Lucy back.[131] In False Start Paulo asked him to be straight about what had happened, then squirmed through a recap delivered as a cheerful assassination.[132][114]

Lucy

In Unwanted Gift, Lucy-baby is too good for the floor, and David is delighted to carry her.

Nobody’s praise makes David glow quite like Lucy’s does, and she has been Lucy-baby to him since his second page in the comic.[133] His snow-day invitation to discover hidden feelings together earned him a comment about smelly hippies. David demanded to know what on earth she did like.[54] She treats him with a mix of exasperation and real fondness that has never wavered much. On his fourteenth birthday she coached him through skipping school with a threat to his crotch, then broke the news about the Flower girl and closed his disastrous day with “.. Yes, David. Happy birthday.”[1][64][2] When he carried the unconscious Lucy away from the river in Search and Rescue, he presented her as the prize for winning the game and spent the walk poking her soft fur.[71][134]

While Lucy was away, David kept bringing her up, usually with no tact at all. At Rachel’s party he corrected everyone’s fond memories of her and announced he’d heard she was dead.[19][20] He kept the gag running into the next school year, asking God to rest her beautiful soul on the beach and telling Paulo he could at least visit her in heaven.[22][135]

When she actually came back, though, he met her with his most uncomplicated warmth. He begged her to punch him so he could feel the power again, and she said that wasn’t appropriate anymore and then did it anyway, to his delight.[101] He led her birthday in Unwanted Gift by carrying her around on his shoulders, since Lucy-baby was too good for the floor that day, and she called it embarrassing but appreciated.[136] And it was David, in Line in the Sand, who ended her self-imposed exile from the lunch table with a pitch about his best babe, his feisty little senorita, and how much everyone loved her.[30] She rated the plan as him outdoing himself, thanked him afterward for getting Augustus among other friends, and told him she owed him one. David declared that his heart might burst.[32][18]

Mike

David makes falling for Mike sound like an especially unpleasant obligation in Date Night.

David has slowly turned his cheerful needling of Mike into something with teeth. For most of the comic he treated it as low-stakes, even when it wasn’t. He dubbed Mike Homo McWhiskers in middle school[137] and once wiped a burning chemical on his scarf, which put him in the hospital.[138] He stomped his hand while rescuing him,[27] and lent Paulo his phone for the crude texts that got Mike’s confiscated in class.[80] In No Service, printed in Volume Four, Paulo again uses David’s phone to send an insult, but the attention cheers Mike up.[139][140] Yet David also dove into the river during the search for him,[72] sculpted him a fish out of candy corn for Halloween,[141] and pulled him into a three-way hug at New Year’s saying he wouldn’t have it any other way.[129] Mike took David joining the track team as a reason to train harder rather than a reason to quit.[107]

In Date Night, David ranked Mike as merely short after seeing him hold hands with James. Mid-race, he informed Mike that he was competing to be the worst character on Earth.[103][142] Having deduced that the track team’s requirement was falling in love with Mike, David loomed over him and volunteered, if he must.[11] He had already whispered that Mike knows what he did before Date Night,[102] and has since beaten him in sprints with a cigar joke attached.[108] In First-Degree Burn, with Mike begging them to stay inside, David breezily told him he didn’t have to come along if he didn’t feel like running.[143]

By Line in the Sand, David was openly leaving Mike out. David’s seating plan sent Lucy and Augustus inside and left Mike outside to get some exercise and make a man of himself, and he framed the choice to Lucy as the obvious one between her and Mike.[30][112] His recap to Paulo in False Start cast Mike as needy and jealous and ended, with total cheer, “And so.. I killed him!”[114] He credits himself with an Uno reverse card and considers the situation completely optimal. When James worries that Mike has started skipping track, David jokes that James wanted him killed with his bare hands.[144][145] Mike is left eating outside, but the group is not unanimous: Paulo and Daisy consider joining him, and James worries about leaving him out.[146][145] Veronica has confirmed that David’s chaos is now intended to affect people rather than remain background commentary.[31]

James

David promises James first pick in Date Night, provided his life follows sports-anime rules.

James went to the movies with his teammate Mike in Date Night and left besotted with someone else entirely.[147] Watching David rant mid-race, framed in roses, James could only ask who he was, and a page later he was begging David to join the team because he was so good.[105][38] David worried that track might clash with his packed schedule and concern his mother. He then accepted and patted James on the head with a promise that if this turned out like one of his sports animes, James would be his first pick.[38][10][11]

Since then James has become a devoted follower, while David keeps looking elsewhere for a boyfriend for him. He spent a chunk of Second String offering to find James an energetic boyfriend and pitching Paulo for the job.[148] James, meanwhile, tells him that running is more fun when he gets to hang out with David, which David attributes to being the bestest boy.[143] He defends David to Sue,[149] and follows him into the cafeteria in Line in the Sand even though it strands Mike, promising to go wherever David goes.[32] Between practices the two stretch together and argue about a magazine,[150] and it was James who broke the Paulo-and-Daisy news that set off David’s scream.[40] He is also, by False Start, the person most alarmed at what he helped David do to Mike.[145]

Minor relationships

Daisy

David made Daisy the damsel in their childhood games; Paulo remembers him being too strong to beat.

Daisy calls him Davie, and their history goes back to childhood games in which David cast her as the damsel.[151][152] These days he is her loudest shipper and her most reliable hazard. His extreme cheerleading encouragement in Scenic Route ended with her twisting her ankle.[28][29] At her sixteenth birthday picnic in Moments Apart he demanded that she and Paulo make out, then suggested marriage, all in front of a seething Abbey.[153] In the side story Everyday Life he declares himself all about tragic, unrequited love and vows to cheerlead for the two of them until they work out their feelings.[154] He also wrecked one of her would-be dates. Arriving with Paulo to collect her for an anime film in Featured Attraction, he realized what he’d walked into only when Daisy’s face fell, and panicked: “I’LL LEAVE IF YOU WANT I SWEAR TO GOD JUST LET ME LEAVE!!”[151][155] Daisy dragged him along anyway, and he beamed at her from the back seat the whole way.[5]

Sue

David apologises for insulting Sue’s play, then wisely decides not to wait around.

David and Sue have been getting on each other’s nerves for years, usually with Sue as the adult in the room and David pointing out that he is taller than her.[39] At the art gallery in Critical Hit she asked whether he was four, and he told her to get with the times.[85] His complaint about clunky scene transitions in Carry Me had already hit a nerve.[156] In Participation Trophy, it got worse. David reviewed Jessica’s play at the lunch table like a critic with column inches to fill, praising its ambition, its authenticity and Rachel’s comic-relief part, while Sue sat through the whole thing knowing he had told everyone hers sucked.[13][110] His rise from English I to AP makes him harder to dismiss as simply stupid.[4]

David announced that a little birdie had told him Sue cared what he thought. James gave Amaya away, David repeated the slip, and the cover story got no better: the birdie had torn into him “With their beak. Because they’re a bird.”[157][24] The apology that followed was about how sorry he was for thinking her play sucked, and then he fled.[24] Paulo ended the chapter teasing Sue about a crush on David; James initially thought he meant a crush on Paulo. Nothing confirms that she actually has either.[158][159]

David’s mom

David sees a love connection where Paulo sees only a reason to groan.

David is a proud mama’s boy, and with good reason. She sends him off to school with an I-love-you, sees straight through his birthday excuses to the little girlfriend behind them, and still put a sparkler in his hot dogs the night he came home with a restraining order.[1][2] He told a small, tearful Paulo that with a mom this awesome there was no reason to miss having a dad,[119] and her breakfasts still earn rave reviews.[95] He feared she would withhold cake after his fifth-grade trip to the principal’s office.[118] But she is indulgent about the iPhone he finds in her secret cupboard: instead of punishing him for opening his Christmas present early, she calls him her special little sleuth. Asked whether he ever gets punished, David answers, “Why would I?”[160] David read her cheerful conversation with Paulo’s dad at the New Year’s party as a potential love connection,[161] though Veronica has confirmed the two are friends rather than a couple, who get along well because their boys are inseparable.[162]

Flower girl

David’s goddess accepts a dance, though his technique remains open to question.

The Flower girl was David’s middle school goddess, and for a while he took her very seriously. He came back from eighth-grade prom bruised but triumphant from her company and, in the same prom flashback, growled Paulo away from her.[57][163] The whole of his fourteenth birthday quest in Onwards to Adventure was built around finding her again, including bellowing at a seven-year-old not to look at his woman.[7][66] By the end of that day Lucy had to tell him she’d transferred to a private school, which he and Paulo took better than expected once the phrase school uniform came up.[2]

Augustus

David finds Witch Hunt’s Final Fantasy Cat every bit as magical as advertised.

David is enchanted with Augustus, whom he casts as a video game character and calls Final Fantasy Cat.[7][2] The peak came on Halloween in Witch Hunt, when David sprinted across a street to ask his brother Melfice where his horns were, and greeted Augustus’s warning to Mike and Paulo with a starry-eyed “You’re like MAGIC.”[49][164] He still swoons when Augustus joins a film conversation.[165] That did not stop him shooing the old man off to Rachel’s table when his seating plan called for it, nor from giving Final Fantasy Cat partial credit for the whole affair afterward.[112][144] Veronica described David as captivated by Augustus without actually spending time with him.[166]
