Finn is a long-haired dog on the Roseville High School track team, and the teammate who lobbied for Mike’s recruitment before Mike agreed to join. He tends to lounge at the edge of a group scene, waiting for somebody to say something he can needle, and he has appointed himself Mike’s biggest fan whether Mike likes it or not. Veronica loves writing him, and she would be the first to tell you he’s a jerk.[1]

Personality

Finn is the teammate with an opinion on everybody’s business, delivered with a grin from the back of the room. He lets the louder members of the team carry a scene, leans back with his arms behind his head, and then drops the one line that lands exactly where it hurts. He can also be unexpectedly kind, but when he gets earnest, he usually follows it with a dig.

In One-Track Mind, the team watches Mike slam Paulo’s face into a cafeteria table, and Darwin wonders aloud whether they should still be recruiting him. Finn is unbothered, since the kid can run and that is all that matters to him. He goes further: “He could flip the table directly onto that guy and I’d still want him running with us.”[2]

Finn welcomes Felix’s impartiality with the respect it deserves.

Needling people is his main hobby. He teases James about his crush from a mall bench in Link Play,[3] rubs Felix’s hypocrisy in his face moments after Felix has hurt James in Second String,[4] and greets Felix’s opinions on his ex with open sarcasm in First-Degree Burn.[5] Veronica calls him a “little jerk” and says that is precisely why he is so fun to write.[1] The same instinct makes him a reliable straight man. He corrects David’s ring-bearer fantasy without cracking a smile,[6] and watches James’s tantrum at Felix with the same flat expression as the rest of the team.[7]

Finn’s recruitment standards are low, but his commitment to the team is not.

Finn does actually look out for people, smirk and all. He steps beside a dejected Mike when James’s attention wanders, and offers him a seat at the team’s table.[8][5] He just can’t say a supportive thing without a thumb to his chest or an insult aimed at somebody else, which is why Mike’s thanks tend to come out tired.[8] He can take a knock himself, though. He looks unsure during the arcade race,[9] but finishes fifth of six and walks out saying it was pretty good anyway. Veronica’s commentary calls him “such a good sport” about it.[10]

Appearance

Finn is a sandy-brown dog with a long, side-swept fringe.[11] On the track he wears the Hornets running uniform along with the rest of the team.[12] His posture is just as distinctive. Whether the team is watching a cafeteria brawl or a lunch-table meltdown, Finn is the one leaning back with his arms behind his head or an arm slung over the back of his chair.[2][5]

Veronica has said she wants to explore his design more, adding that she loves any chance to draw “that sneaky lil jerk”.[13]

Significant events

Finn offers Mike the team’s bluntest version of emotional support in First-Degree Burn.

Finn knew James before James transferred to Roseville and attended Sue’s play with Felix and Darwin, as James later tells her in Participation Trophy.[14] The team was already interested in recruiting Mike when he fought Paulo in the cafeteria in High Expectations; the flashback in One-Track Mind shows that Finn wasn’t about to let that put him off.[2]

Readers first meet Finn in Track Meet at the lunch table, where James lets slip that the whole team talks about Mike a lot, and Finn joins Lucas, Darwin and Felix in a horrified chorus telling him not to say that.[11] Later, in the gym, he tells James he can’t believe he actually convinced Mike to join,[12] and stands beside the coach as Mike, James and Darwin line up to race.[15]

Link Play sends him Christmas shopping at Garden Square mall with Mike, James, Lucas and Felix.[16] He embarrasses James on a bench, invites Mike along to Fiesta Pizza,[3] and is delighted to hit an arcade he hasn’t visited in ages,[17] where he comes fifth in the six-player racing game.[10] That night, when Mike needs to calm down, he pictures the whole team, Finn included.[18]

With David on the team in Second String, James jokes that the team doesn’t need Mike anymore,[19] which is Finn’s cue to step in as Mike’s loudest supporter.[8] He also puts a flat correction on David’s daydream about being ring bearer.[6] In First-Degree Burn, as Mike watches James leave with David, Finn offers him a place with the rest of the team, and Mike runs after James anyway.[5][20]

Mike

Finn declares himself Mike’s biggest fan, whether Mike asked for one or not.

Finn argued for recruiting Mike even after watching him assault Paulo,[2] and was mortified when James revealed how much the team talked about him.[11] When James jokes in Second String that the team doesn’t need Mike now that David is around,[19] Finn plants a thumb on his chest and announces that he is still Mike’s “biggest fan”. Then he crosses his arms and adds that he just loves a good underdog story. Mike’s reply slides from a polite thanks to a flat “Okay, Finn.”[8]

Finn tries again in First-Degree Burn. Mike is spiralling as James walks off with David, and Finn is the one who tells him he could always hang out with the team instead and forget about “stinky ol’ James”.[5] For a moment, he tells Mike plainly not to take anything James says personally. Mike runs after James regardless, and Finn’s whole review of the decision is a muttered “Oh, brother.”[20] Veronica’s commentary sides with Finn here, wondering why Mike doesn’t just hang out with the cool jocks.[5] The offer stays open. The team is the image Mike reaches for when he needs to calm down in Link Play,[18] but James doubts Mike cares as much about them in return,[21] and he has yet to take Finn up on it.

James

Finn has clocked James’s feelings for Mike and cannot resist saying so, however much James would like them kept quiet. The two knew each other before James transferred to Roseville.[14] In Link Play, Finn is waiting on a mall bench when James and Mike return, and greets them with “You lovebirds done yet?” James goes crimson and shouts over him about what a nice joke that was, while Mike remains entirely oblivious and Finn smirks.[3]

James isn’t always his target. When Felix wounds James in Second String, Finn calls out Felix’s hypocrisy,[4] and his verdict to Mike in First-Degree Burn is that James is “just an idiot” whose remarks shouldn’t be taken personally.[20] James, meanwhile, counts Finn among the people who like Mike enough to keep him company.[21]

Felix

In Second String, Finn catches Felix making the same mistake he was policing.

Finn often ends up next to Felix, and between them they do most of the commentary on everybody else. They browse the mall together in Link Play and leave the arcade side by side,[22][10] but the fun starts when Felix oversteps. In Second String, Felix scolds James about mean jokes and then lands a nasty one of his own, and Finn immediately asks who exactly was doing the scolding a minute ago.[4] In First-Degree Burn, Felix, who happens to be James’s ex, weighs in on James’s failings, and Finn asks, “Here with the neutral perspective, huh?”[5] Veronica describes Felix as a nice “straight man” alongside Finn,[1] which is a generous way of saying Finn needs somebody to be a jerk to.

Minor relationships

Darwin

After the cafeteria fight, Darwin is the one who asks whether the team should really still be recruiting Mike, and he is also the one who has to hear Finn’s table-flipping endorsement. His only response is a tired “Why are you like this Finn”.[2] The two of them also sat together in the audience of Sue’s play and later appear with the team at its table.[14][23]

Trivia

  • The track team, Finn included, did not exist when James first appeared. Veronica has described the team as a late addition to James’s development, alongside her decision to have him transfer schools.[24][25]
  • Chronologically, his earliest appearance is a flashback in Participation Trophy, where he sits in the audience of Sue’s play alongside Felix and Darwin before James transferred to Roseville.[14]
