Courtney attends Roseville High School and has a locker next to Paulo’s, making her a regular target for his hallway flirting. She tells him when a line is lame but keeps chatting with him, and later becomes the classmate who tells him to stop dithering and kiss Daisy already.

Love Again finds Courtney unimpressed by Paulo’s memory loss.

Courtney has heard enough of Paulo’s pickup lines to recognize the routine. She is frank about what she thinks of him, but amused enough to keep listening; when it comes to his love life, she is more of a commentator than a contestant.

The teasing and the enjoyment are hard to tell apart. She calls out his fake-surprise opener at the lockers by pointing out she saw him there yesterday, tells him his after-school “extra credit” pitch is lame, and then giggles behind her hand while he keeps going regardless.[1][2] She is less keen on Madison’s interruption than on the flirting, though. When Madison storms in to break the two of them up, Courtney hurries past her with a strained smile and a mumbled goodbye.[2] By Third Wheel, that same bluntness has turned toward Paulo’s feelings for Daisy: Courtney tells Daisy that she had already advised him to shut up and kiss her.[3]

Seeing Stars finds Courtney looking perfectly at home among the hallway crowd.

Courtney is a cat, and a student who is often seen with a textbook held to her chest in the hallways.[1][4] She also puts a hand on her hip, whether she is chatting with a friend at her locker or smirking inside Daisy’s imagination.[5][6]

Significant events

Courtney’s recurring role starts in Model Girlfriend, where she leans over the lunch table and smirks at Paulo while Rachel, Sue and Daisy all react badly to the show.[7] In Love Again, Paulo abandons Daisy’s birthday invitation mid-sentence to flirt with Courtney at the lockers, and the two of them carry on until Madison cuts in and Courtney makes herself scarce.[1][2]

Paulo’s next exchange with her is less flirtatious. In Fuel Economy, Courtney is at her locker lamenting that her mom would never let her out for a midnight premiere. Paulo pops up to offer her and her friend a lift in his new car, which leaves both girls a bit taken aback.[5] In Third Wheel, Daisy goes around asking classmates whether everyone knew about her and Paulo. Courtney had already worked it out from Paulo himself.[3]

Paulo is the one who keeps trying to turn his banter with Courtney into a pickup. By the time the two of them share a panel she is already smirking at him across the lunch table, and in Everyday Life his request for her digits gets the reply that he is “still trying that one.”[7][8] Love Again makes the pattern explicit: Paulo drops Daisy mid-invitation to flirt, while Courtney punctures his lines without actually walking away until Madison interrupts.[1][2]

The significance is less what Courtney feels than what Paulo’s behavior says about him. Madison complains that he has been “chatting up every dumb bimbo in class,” and when Rachel later says she has seen him with other girls, Paulo glances at Courtney passing by with surprise and shame.[9][10] Veronica likewise cited Paulo being “all over Courtney as late as Volume Six” as evidence that obnoxious flirting was still his M.O.[11] By Third Wheel, Courtney’s role has shifted from flirtation target to classmate who knows where Paulo’s attention really lies: she has already told him to shut up and kiss Daisy.[3]

For Daisy, Courtney first matters as the girl Paulo ran off to instead of hearing her birthday invitation. Later, Daisy twice imagines Courtney among the people she measures herself against when worrying about Paulo’s attraction to other girls.[1][6][12] Their only real conversation, in Third Wheel, flips that around. Courtney casually tells Daisy that Paulo has it bad for her and had already lost his mind when Courtney suggested kissing her; Daisy is left more perturbed than flattered.[3]

Trivia

  • Her first appearance is a silent one at the back of the roller coaster in Love My Way, sitting beside Craig during the carnival montage. She does not say a word until Love Again, more than nine years after Love My Way began publication.[13][1]
