Daisy’s mom is Daisy’s mother and Teddy’s wife, a big, beaming Ragamuffin cat. She turns up in the comic exactly where a parent should: behind the wheel of the family SUV, helping with a birthday cookout, and answering the front door of Daisy’s house. She is warm to every teenager who crosses her path and a shade embarrassing to the one she raised. Veronica considers Daisy’s parents canonically nameless; “Teddy” is the nickname she gave her husband.[1]

Personality

Daisy’s mom runs the sort of household where a late guest is right on time and one of Daisy’s friends gets offered a lift home. When Mike arrives late to Daisy’s birthday cookout, she reassures him and carries his present to the table herself.[2] She waves Paulo in with a smile,[3] stoops to take Jasmine’s present,[4] and years later greets Paulo by name at the front door before leading him to a sick Daisy’s room.[5]

Guest of Honor gives Daisy’s mother one embarrassing live-show memory too many.

Her grasp of Daisy’s hobbies is a parent’s grasp. Hyper Space Cadets are, as far as she can tell, the guys in the “rainbow suits”, and she checks with Daisy to be sure.[6] She did take Daisy to the live show when she was younger, though, and she is not above bringing that up in the car with Paulo listening: “You almost cried.”[6]

The BCI side stories play the same affectionate cluelessness against Daisy’s insecurities. In Everyday Life, Daisy’s mom tells her she will be happier once she accepts her curls. When Daisy points out that this is easy to say for someone who isn’t built like her and her father, her mother answers with a knowing “well, I DID marry your daddy..”[7] Family Comix pushes the joke into body image: Daisy says she wishes she weren’t fat, her mother says she had the same body type at that age and that Daisy will get super tall too, and Daisy ends up in tears.[8]

Appearance

Daisy’s mom is a very large tan cat. At Daisy’s birthday cookout she is visibly taller than Daisy and her friends,[2] and in Tickets Please Paulo looks up at her as they walk through the house.[5] Veronica puts the size down to breed: the mother is the Ragamuffin and the father the Selkirk Rex, which is why she is “so huge” and Teddy is not.[9] Veronica has also imagined her a little taller than an adult Daisy, whose height she loosely estimates at around six feet.[10]

She wears round glasses.[11] At the cookout her brown hair is in a short bob, a cut Veronica has cheerfully described as a common one, with the verdict “SHE IS SUCH A MOM”.[12] By Tickets Please it has grown past her shoulders.[11] A rough sketch Veronica posted in January 2015, months before the on-panel debut, already has the broad grin, glasses and messy hair.[13]

Significant events

Daisy’s mom is mentioned before she is seen. In Guest of Honor, a car horn sounds outside Paulo’s house and Daisy hurries Paulo along because her mom has been waiting a while.[14] She appears at the end of the chapter, driving the pair home from the convention and asking Daisy whether she got her book signed.[6] At Daisy’s doorway she offers Paulo a ride home too, which he turns down.[15]

Even Teddy’s spectacular collapse cannot interrupt Daisy’s mom’s calm domestic competence.

For Daisy’s sixteenth birthday in Moments Apart, she helps host a cookout at Roseville Park while Teddy mans the grill.[2][16] When she interrupts Daisy and Abbey mid-conversation, the exes answer her concerned look with a burst of very loud cheerfulness and hurry off.[17] Later she props Teddy up after he trips over the Turtle,[18] then watches with a tearful smile through the camera as Daisy cuts her birthday cake.[19]

In Tickets Please, she opens the front door to Paulo one evening while Daisy is home sick. She tells him Daisy may need another day off but can still have a visitor, and leads him down the hall.[11][5] A few pages later, with her mother out of the scene, Daisy and Paulo kiss.[20]

Daisy

Daisy’s mom is the doting, unembarrassed kind of parent, and Daisy at sixteen still calls her “Mommy”.[2] She waits outside Paulo’s house while Daisy gets ready for the convention,[14] throws the birthday cookout,[2] and is behind the camera with wet eyes when the cake comes out.[19] Daisy clearly wants to spare herself the difficult explanations, though: caught mid-conversation with Abbey, she manages a strained “y-yes Mommy!!” and a cheer rather than explain what is going on between them.[17]

Daisy also wants a little dignity in front of her friends, and her mother has too many memories to grant it. The live show where Daisy nearly cried comes out in the car with Paulo listening,[6] while the side stories let her mother’s well-meant advice about curls and body type land just as awkwardly.[7][8] Veronica has said that what Daisy’s mother actually wants is for her daughter to be happy in the long term and not “too dumb about her love life”, while encouraging her to care more about her studies.[21]

Teddy

Teddy’s tumble gets the loudest possible response from his wife.

She is the big one and the boisterous one, and she is plainly head over heels for him. Veronica describes the pair as very affectionate, with Teddy “pretty meek and timid” next to his “happy boisterous big wife”.[13] At the cookout she kisses him on the head while he flips burgers and asks him to save her the burnt ones,[16] and once the cake is served the two sit together talking while the teenagers mingle.[22] Even his nickname came from her: Veronica says she calls him Teddy because he looks like a little teddy bear to her.[1]

His trip over the turtle draws a cry of “Teddy!!” and leaves her kneeling beside him, propping him up and assuring the guests, “We’ll be fine!”[18] The side stories exaggerate the same size-and-affection joke. Family Comix gives the pair a college meet-cute in which he falls on the pavement and she lifts him bodily off it,[8] while Ships Ahoy, Season Four has her scoop him into a hug after an awful day until he admits he feels better.[23]

Minor relationships

Paulo

Paulo gets an easy welcome from Daisy’s mom from the beginning. She drives him home from the convention, chats with him about Hyper Space Cadets and offers a second lift at the door.[6][15] At the cookout she greets him with a friendly wave.[3] By Tickets Please she knows him by name, greeting him with “Good evening, Paulo!” and sending him up to a sick Daisy because, as she puts it, “I’m sure it’ll make her happy.”[11][5]

Trivia

  • Veronica considers Daisy’s parents “canonically nameless”, so their names could be anything.[1]
  • Daisy’s mom is the only character who says “Teddy” aloud in the main comic; she cries his nickname when he falls in Moments Apart.[18]
  • She works in a lab doing “doctor-esque things”, the hands-on counterpart to Sue’s mom, who Veronica says is more the theory-and-lectures type.[24] Family Comix shows her at the test tubes with a goggled Daisy beside her.[25]
  • Her first appearance anywhere was in the BCI anthology Family Comix in 2013, two years before her main-comic debut.[26]
  • Daisy is an only child by design. Veronica says her parents “were more than content with the one!”[27]
