Haley is Mike’s younger sister, a sophomore at Roseville High School and the middle child of her family. At home she splits her time between needling her brother and hauling around their baby brother Chris, very often at the same time. Veronica has ruled that Haley doesn’t hate Mike, she just resents him a little, and there’s a very big difference.[1] Lately the comic has been showing what there is to resent, since the childcare keeps landing on her and the praise keeps landing on him.

Personality

Babysitting can wait when Haley has somewhere better to be.

Hang around Haley long enough and she’ll call you a dork eventually, unless you happen to be Lucy, in which case she’ll cheerfully ask whether you’ve gotten sick of her brother yet. She is confident, quick with a smirk, and perfectly capable of feeding a toddler and running a con on her parents in the same evening. She does the family’s childcare without taking it out on Chris and with plenty of complaint about everyone else, and she treats Mike’s social life as a running show she pretends not to be watching.

Mike’s hobbies remain a gift to Haley’s vocabulary.

Making fun of Mike is pretty much her default setting. Her parting shot at her own introduction in December is to offer Lucy the job of fixing the stick up his ass,[2] and she keeps finding fresh material after that. She impersonates him in his own scarf on the way to Sandy’s fashion show, and once he’s had a makeover she announces that her friends can finally stop asking why her brother doesn’t go to Hogwarts.[3][4] A single muttered word over his shoulder is enough to send him diving for his monitor.[5] Veronica’s own verdict on the mail-throwing incident in Unwanted Gift is simply that Haley is such a jerk.[6]

She has a sly streak too, and it works out in her favour more often than not. The moment her parents leave her and Mike to babysit in Adult Supervision, she drops her house robe to reveal a dress underneath and heads out to meet friends for pizza.[7] She then pockets a goodnight kiss for babysitting she never did before wiping off her lipstick with a relieved “whew..”.[8] When Mike’s guild turns up in Behind Closed Doors, she blocks his exit and informs him that the computer is hers for the day, since she’d already claimed it before somebody made her answer the door.[9]

Still, the mockery isn’t the whole story. Called out by Jasmine for thinking everyone is a dork, Haley insists that her dorky brother at least has “impeccably dorky taste,” which is an insult and a defence at the same time.[10] Veronica notes that when she shuts the door on Mike’s friends she is secretly wishing she could stay and watch the awkwardness unfold.[9] The one time she drops the act entirely, knocking softly on his door after his breakup in Eternal Flame, is something Veronica has been careful to call a once-in-a-lifetime event.[11]

Appearance

Haley is a grey cat, like the rest of her family.[12] Her signature accessory is a yellow bow, worn low under her right ear,[13][14] and her hair runs a little longer than the comic’s other ribbon-wearing girls’. Around the house she lounges in a pink robe.[13][15] She dresses up properly when it counts, though. Her night out in Adult Supervision involves a purple belted dress, silver ball stud earrings, mascara and lipstick.[7]

That longer hair was a deliberate choice on Veronica’s part. She first trialed it on Stacy, then handed it to Haley so the two girls with a ribbon on the right side of their heads would stop looking so similar.[14] Her colouring has shifted a bit over the years as well. In the Volume 3 era she, Chris and their father leaned a greenish grey against their mother’s purple-grey, a palette Veronica later simplified.[12]

Significant events

Haley spends her earliest appearances on the edges of Mike’s home life, side-eyeing him across the dinner table in A Distance Apart[16] and occupying the bathroom while he waits outside in Unrequited.[17] Her proper introduction only comes in December, when she has Chris in her arms, greets Lucy warmly, and sends her brother off with a jab about his phone calls to Sandy.[2]

Bathroom rights are apparently settled before Mike even gets to complain.

Adult Supervision establishes the family role that matters most later: Haley is the sibling everyone expects to watch Chris. The parents go out for the evening and leave the two older kids in charge, so Haley leaves Mike quite literally holding the baby while she sneaks off to meet friends for pizza.[7] She is back in bed by midnight, in time to collect the credit.[8] After that she stays firmly in Mike’s orbit. She rides along to Sandy’s fashion show in Just Beautiful,[18][3] and reports to Ellen on Chris’s dinner in Boy Toy.[19] In Behind Closed Doors she announces Sue and the rest of Mike’s guild, enjoys the sight of Paulo hiding in the closet, and then claims the computer for the day.[20][9]

Sandy’s visit in Model Girlfriend gives Haley another excuse to embarrass Mike before dinner.[21] She eventually bursts into his room, catches the couple mid-embrace, and points at his bare neck until the embarrassment turns into laughter.[22] Love Again shows her at school for the first time, at Jasmine’s cafeteria table,[10] and on Lucy’s birthday in Unwanted Gift she pelts a moping Mike with the letters and strolls off cackling.[6]

Haley catches Mike in the act and makes the most of his embarrassment.

The sibling gag drops away in Eternal Flame, right after Sandy’s breakup call has left Mike sobbing in his trashed room. Haley knocks and asks to come in, and he bolts straight past her and out of the house.[23][24]

The most recent chapters talk about her more than they show her. In Second String she is out with friends and not answering her mother’s texts, which lands Chris on Mike for the night and sets off a phone fight about the babysitting arrangement that Mike overhears.[25][26] In Tickets Please, she glares silently from the kitchen while Ellen showers Mike with praise for the same chore normally expected of Haley.[15]

Major relationships

Mike

Haley’s concern cannot catch Mike before he runs from it.

Haley makes Mike her favourite target, and Ellen measures her against him at home. From her first named line in December onwards, she treats him as a walking punchline,[2] with his devotion to Sandy as her preferred subject.[3][21] Mike expects the worst from her. He imagines her tattling on him as soon as anything goes wrong,[27] and when Abbey suggests he join her lunch table, Mike just sighs that she would mind.[28] The BCI side story Store Credit uses the same pattern in middle school, with Mike fretting over her birthday present because she gives him such a hard time about everything.[29]

In Eternal Flame, for once, she drops the act. After Sandy’s 4AM breakup call leaves Mike sobbing on the floor of his wrecked room, Haley knocks and asks, “Everything okay in there?”, then leans on the wall and asks to come in.[23] Mike bursts out past her in his winter jacket and yells that he needs space. She reaches after him, starts to ask whether it’s about Sandy, and flinches when the front door slams. She ends up standing in his doorway, staring at the overturned chair and the heaped blanket.[24] Veronica has confirmed the concern was genuine while warning that it was a once-in-a-lifetime event, adding that Haley does love Mike at the end of the day.[11]

Haley has a pretty concrete source for her resentment at home. Haley was the default sibling babysitter from the start: in Adult Supervision Mike protests that he has never watched Chris before,[7] and in Second String he admits that Haley does this all the time and he doesn’t.[30] By Tickets Please, Haley is left glaring from the kitchen as their mother calls Mike a star for stepping in again.[15] The what-if special Merry Christmas, Roseville! takes the joke to its conclusion, imagining a world where Mike was never born and a politely baffled Haley tells him “I only have a younger brother.”[31]

Ellen

Ellen’s grateful praise lands badly when Haley is already running on empty.

For a long while this was a sweet, low-stakes relationship, though Ellen was already leaning on her daughter for help at home. Ellen pats her head at breakfast,[17] the two of them have dinner together while Mike sweats through Sandy’s fashion show,[4] and Haley gives her a chatty rundown of Chris’s eating habits in Boy Toy.[19] It’s also Ellen’s trusting goodnight kiss that lets the Adult Supervision con work at all.[8]

The arrangement starts to look a lot sadder in Second String. Ellen knows that using Haley as Chris’s default sitter is unfair, and she says so to the other parent on the phone: “She’s not his parent, YOU are!”[25] Talking to Mike a little later, though, she frets about what she is going to do with Haley, notes that Haley doesn’t ace her exams, and tells Mike, “Michael. My diamond.”[30] Meanwhile, Haley is out with friends and isn’t answering her mother’s texts.[26] In Tickets Please she watches from the kitchen as Ellen hands Mike breakfast money and tells him he’s lifting so much off her shoulders.[15]

Chris

Haley’s responsible expression disappears as soon as the adults leave in Adult Supervision.

Chris is more Haley’s charge than her playmate, and she is good at the job whether or not she wants it. He is in her arms at her named introduction,[2] and handed off the instant she can escape in Adult Supervision.[13] Later, Haley can report exactly how he ate at dinner, and Chris can recite their settled routine as “Panda movie an’ oranges!”[19][32] Veronica confirms that Haley is the one usually in charge of him, with a sympathetic “Middle child struggles, am I right?”[7] Her frustration is aimed at the arrangement rather than at Chris.

Minor relationships

Jasmine and the sophomore table

Haley’s school world is Jasmine’s cafeteria table, alongside Mina, Cassidy and a brown-and-white dog boy. Jasmine ribs her as the resident cynic, telling her “you think everyone’s a dork”, and Haley sulks into a juice box about it.[10] She looks right at home there all the same, happily chattering away through lunch in Fuel Economy.[33]

Sandy

Sandy is less a relationship than premium teasing material, from the jab at Haley’s introduction[2] to the scarf impersonation in Just Beautiful.[3] Haley’s way of finally meeting her in Model Girlfriend is to burst in on her and Mike, and the scene ends with all three of them laughing.[22]

Abbey

Haley’s welcome leaves Abbey wishing he were anywhere else in Love Again.

Her sneer at “dorky-ass friends” lands squarely on Abbey in Love Again,[10] though by Fuel Economy he’s a routine fixture at her lunch table.[33] In the BCI side story Door to Door, she cheerfully profits from his cookie sale to Mike, declaring the boxes “Restitution for emotional damage!”[34]

  • Haley dates back to Veronica’s childhood original series. Her commentary on Haley’s introduction notes that Mike’s original baby sister, whose name Veronica thinks was Crystal, was gender-flipped into Chris for BCB.[2]
  • Mike mentions an unnamed sister who abuses a fighting-game move as far back as Gaming Rivalry in 2006.[35] Haley is drawn silently at the dinner table in A Distance Apart in 2010, before receiving her proper named introduction in December in 2011.[16][2]
  • Veronica rewrote Haley’s page in Boy Toy. The original had her being her usual jerky self to Mike, which she and Oliver decided seemed too one-dimensional, so Haley got a normal little chat with her mother instead.[19]
  • Veronica’s commentary on Model Girlfriend reveals Haley was standing outside Mike’s door the entire time Sandy was over, until her mother called dinner.[22]
