Vivacious and flirtatious, Rachel is more or less the ringleader of the senior friend group. She knows her worth and is ready to stick up for those she cares about, but she tends to set her own feelings aside in the process. She got her start slapping Tess in a hallway over her little brother Aaron, and has spent the years since collecting boys, best friends, and pet names for all of them.

Personality

Rachel’s helpful advice takes a decidedly Rachel-shaped turn.

Rachel is the one yelling invitations out of the van window and hugging people from behind before they’ve noticed she’s in the room. Everybody in her orbit gets a pet name, most boys get flirted with at least once, and anyone in earshot gets the details of her sex life whether they asked for them or not. She is a tease by trade, happy to pour a friend a drink that’s a bit too strong or needle them about a crush, but she is also the first person to plop down next to whoever is crying. The catch is that she is a good deal better at looking after other people than she is at admitting when she’s the one who is hurt.

In Rachel’s very first appearance, she delivers a swift smack in the face to Tess, citing Roger breaking her brother’s arm, and has to be talked down from her anger by Jessica.[1] Though she can still hold a grudge, Rachel is not one to let these things rule her life. Once it became evident she’d have to share space with Tess in Pillow Talk, she accepted the situation and confidently walked through the doorway, saying “not like I was gonna leave!”[2]

Rachel is promiscuous, and she isn’t particularly shy about it. When Lucy apologizes to Jessica and Rachel for insinuating they were such, Jessica clarifies to Lucy that Rachel “actually is a slut,” to which Rachel laughs and starts describing an intimate moment with Paulo until she is told to stop.[3] She is also quick to suggest sexual favors as a social lubricant, telling a tearful Jasmine she could thank Paulo with a “BJ”.[4] This goes back a ways. When a freshman Rachel announced she was in love with the new kid, Jessica’s whole response was to ask whether it was happening again.[5] While she’s not embarrassed about her sexuality, she takes real issue with being reduced to it. She snaps at Paulo when he wonders if they should even be talking after their night together,[6] and she gets genuinely angry at Jessica for turning her into a “one-note slut” in the play presented in Method Acting.[7]

Though she’s very good at holding a group together, Rachel will often keep her feelings to herself if it can de-escalate an issue. The most egregious example would be her birthday party in Happy Hour; when the sophomores get drunk and air their dirty laundry, Rachel is there to reel everyone back in. She consoles a crying Mike,[8] and keeps her mouth shut when Paulo talks about another girl.[9] Even after the party ends, she cuts her lecture to a sick, drunken Paulo short to console him instead.[10] She downplays her sadness as her “situationship” with Paulo unravels in Love Again despite her friends’ efforts to console her,[11] and doesn’t take a chance she’s given to really address the birthday fiasco in Moments Apart.[12] In New Year’s Resolution, she politely removes herself from the situation after noticing that Paulo is upset.[13]

When somebody she loves is in trouble, Rachel wades in first and thinks about it second. At twelve-year-old Aaron’s hospital bedside she offers to tutor him and gets screamed at for her trouble. She puts on a brave face in the corridor, and then sobs into Jessica that she can’t do anything to help.[14][15] The same freshman year, she hauled a brand-new kid named Matt out of Tess’s reach with a bit of quick thinking about homework.[16] She punches Lucy for interrupting one of Jessica’s stories,[17] and she drags Paulo off by the ear when he’s rude to Matt in Boy Toy.[18]

After letting so much slide with her friends, Rachel does eventually boil over. Once she gets going about Jessica’s play in Method Acting, she admits that “I’ve given too many people too much leeway until now!”, and then lashes out at anyone in range, including Matt for trying to smooth it over.[19] She softens after Jessica apologizes, though, and is positively glowing once David puts a kinder spin on her role in the play.[20][21]

Appearance

Rachel’s affectionate greeting leaves Paulo looking considerably less prepared.

Rachel is a short white dog with dark pupils and black ears that resemble pigtails. She has quite a wardrobe, from casual tops and skirts to party dresses. She often wears hair clips above her ears, shapes varying from flowers, hearts, to Cardcaptor Sakura-esque wings.[22][23] Even her sleepover pajamas come as a matching navy set,[24] and for junior prom she pairs a frilly white dress with black floral clips.[25]

When she is first introduced in Follow Me, her ears are long and scruffy;[1] her ears start to get their recognizable bounce in A Different Side.[26] Starting from New Beginnings, her ears curl at the ends, tied off at the base with scrunchies.[27] As of Golden Hour, her ears have lost their curl and instead have a full, bouncy look.[28]

Rachel is short even beside the other students, though not quite as short as Amaya.[29] She spends a lot of panels looking up at Paulo, Matt, and even Jessica.[30][31]

Significant events

Freshman year

Rachel’s freshman year is shown in flashbacks. In the BCI comic Blind Date, she rescues the new kid Matt from Tess and Roger[16] and brings him into her circle with Jessica and Jordan.[32] That year, her brother Aaron’s kickball hits Tess, and Roger kicks the boy while he is curled up on the ground.[33] A flashback in Pillow Talk shows Rachel trying to help at the hospital, then crying in Jessica’s arms outside.[14][15] Later in the flashback, she cheerfully brings Jessica to class despite the rumors Tess has spread about her.[34]

Sophomore year

Rachel slaps Tess in the freshman hallway over Aaron’s arm in Follow Me.

Her on-panel debut comes in Follow Me, where she and Jessica corner Tess in the freshman hallway and Rachel slaps her over Aaron’s still-healing arm.[1]

Rachel wastes no time turning Daisy’s blush into an interrogation.

In A Different Side she rejects Tess’s pep-rally apology,[35] but she comes out of the day with a new friend. She and Jessica thank Daisy for snapping at Paulo and take her along to the outlet center.[26][36]

Junior year

Over the summer, Rachel and Jessica meet Daisy and Abbey picnicking in New Beginnings, and Rachel’s teasing prompts Abbey to confess his feelings.[37] Come fall, the pair join Daisy’s lunch table.[38] In Back and Forth, Rachel dates Paulo as part of their revenge on Tess.[39][40] At Daisy’s sleepover for Lucy in Pillow Talk, she stays despite finding Tess there, and Lucy punches her for her choice of advice to Jasmine.[2][4] At New Year’s, she brings Jessica to Tess’s party in Ten Seconds to Midnight.[41]

Rachel gives Paulo somewhere safe to fall apart in Leaving Home.

After Lucy leaves Roseville in Leaving Home, Rachel comforts Paulo in the snow and takes him home.[42][43] In Study Buddy, they agree to keep things casual, but Jasmine later walks in on them cuddling at a study session.[44] Her birthday party in Happy Hour ends in a drunken argument, and she stays up looking after Paulo.[45][10] In Take Heart, she reassures Paulo about Matt,[46] and in Small Fry she teaches him to drive at the drive-in and admits she is struggling not to fall for him.[47]

In Total Recall, Rachel invites Paulo to her junior prom[48] and arrives in a white dress with their group’s limo.[25] She stays behind with a sick Jessica,[49] then visits Paulo and Matt in the hospital after their car accident.[50] In Boy Toy, she glares Paulo into accepting Matt’s beach-house invitation[51] before pulling him aside over his rudeness.[18] She wishes Tess luck at graduation in Class of 2008.[52] In the Volume Five-exclusive Afterglow, she confesses her love to Paulo without getting the response she hoped for.[53] At Matt’s aunt’s beach house in Golden Hour, she makes college plans with Matt and calls Daisy.[28][54] At summer’s end, Paulo visits while her parents are away in Behind Closed Doors.[55]

Senior year

In Table for One, Rachel’s group sits at the neighboring senior table.[56] Her friends console her over Paulo in Love Again,[31] and she ends their arrangement in Unspoken Rule.[57][58] At Daisy’s sixteenth birthday in Moments Apart, she forgives the earlier party fiasco and helps comfort Daisy.[12][59]

Rachel encourages Sue to try cheerleading in Popularity Contest.

Away from the relationship trouble, Rachel bowls strikes at Madison’s party in Fair Game,[60] encourages Sue at cheer practice in Popularity Contest,[61] and helps Paulo with gas money in Fuel Economy.[62] She welcomes Augustus into the group’s outings in Double Down.[63] At New Year’s, she notices Paulo is upset but leaves with Matt rather than staying to comfort him.[13]

Jessica’s play in Method Acting causes a rift between the best friends.[7] Rachel reassures Daisy about dating Paulo in Third Wheel,[64] then reconciles with Jessica in Participation Trophy.[20] In Line in the Sand, she enthusiastically welcomes Augustus to the senior lunch table.[65]

Major relationships

Jessica

Rachel knows loyalty means believing Jessie before anyone else.

Jessica (affectionately nicknamed “Jessie”) is Rachel’s best friend dating back to freshman year and a fellow member of Roseville High School’s cheer squad. Of the two, Rachel is the gas pedal and Jessica is the brakes. It is Jessica who hauls Rachel off Tess in Follow Me,[1] and Jessica who claps a hand over her mouth before she can spill the “pretend dates” plot at a sleepover.[66] When the pair do point in the same direction, it’s usually at Tess, and their most infamous joint effort was sleeping with her not-quite boyfriend and telling her about it afterwards.[40]

Underneath the mischief, the loyalty runs both ways, though Rachel would rather nobody made a fuss about hers. When Tess spread rumors about Jessica in freshman year, Rachel heard the gossip and simply decided not to acknowledge it, and she tells Jessica in Pillow Talk that she doesn’t need her battles fought for her either.[67] The ribbing is constant all the same. Rachel gets in a jab about Jess’s old crush on a particular white cat whenever the chance arises,[41][68] and Jessica, in turn, will matter-of-factly call Rachel a slut, which Rachel takes as an invitation to elaborate.[3]

There is a point where the joking goes too far, and Jessica’s school play in Method Acting finds it. Rachel recognizes herself in a caricature named Rina, but what really sets her off is Jessica’s refusal to admit who any of the characters were based on. Her position is that if Jessica thought all her friends were stereotypes, she should have said so like an adult.[69] Of course, BFFs are forever. Jessica turns up in Participation Trophy with a slushie and a stack of notes, and Rachel doesn’t hold out long once Jessica sincerely apologizes, declaring “BFFs forever, right?”[20] David then seals the deal by recasting Rina as the character who stood by Jessica’s stand-in, to Madison’s dismay.[21]

Paulo

Rachel comforts Paulo, something she’d often end up doing for him.

For Rachel, it seems opportunity only ever knocks whenever Paulo loses his chance at true love. While Rachel was attracted to Paulo early on, her first date with him doubled as a means of getting back at Tess by sleeping with him — something she’d later go on to regret.[39][70] She would later draw the distinction herself: Jess might have been in it for revenge, but for Rachel it was about Paulo.[71] After Breaking Up, Rachel and Paulo get closer; upon Lucy’s departure, Rachel becomes a shoulder to cry on... and a bit more.[42][43]

Rachel set the terms of their “situationship” herself in Take Heart: nothing serious, because she wants a family one day and Paulo is still in love with Lucy,[30] and Paulo happily agreed that he liked what they had.[72] Rachel did much of the looking after him. Even before that conversation, she spent her own birthday party nursing him through his tears over Lucy, which Veronica’s commentary summed up as far too much patience and care for this kid.[73] In Small Fry, she teaches him to drive at the drive-in and confesses that she is struggling not to fall in love with him.[47] She later picks him up for prom in a limo shared with their friends.[25] By the Volume Five-exclusive Afterglow, she has lost that fight. Her post-coital “I love you, you know” is met with Paulo’s baffled protest that he thought she wanted fun, not marriage.[53] She laughs it off as “silly ol’ afterglow Rachel” and is then left alone in her kitchen once he’s gone.[74]

Rachel sees the ending coming well before Paulo does, and she is the one who finally says it out loud. In Golden Hour she smirks as she hands him the phone to talk to Daisy,[54] and he still looks thoroughly confused when she calls him her “boo” on the first day of his junior year.[75] After watching him flirt with other girls, she calls it off in Unspoken Rule on the grounds that they were never together anyway. Once he’s out of sight she cries, then decides it’s for the best.[58][76] Veronica’s commentary counts it as two ships sunk in a couple of pages.[58] The two stay friendly afterwards. Rachel insists to Madison that they worked it out[77] and even covers his gas money once,[62] but in New Year’s Resolution she declines to be his shoulder for once, much to his dismay.[13] Paulo has regrets of his own: in Made Fresh, he includes Rachel among the relationships that moved faster than he wanted.[78] Looking back, Veronica has called theirs a great dynamic that wouldn’t be as fun now.[79]

Tess

Rachel and Jessica finally reveal their revenge on Tess.

Given Rachel held Tess and her ex-boyfriend responsible for Aaron’s broken arm, she had a bone to pick; in Rachel’s comic debut, she slaps Tess across the face.[1] By Rachel’s junior year, Tess accepted Rachel’s disdain, but for Rachel, it was far from enough. She and Jessica tag-teamed sleeping with Paulo to get back at Tess, who certainly did not take it sitting down. Rachel’s parting shot that morning was that Paulo had been sweet to her, and it was a shame Tess never gave him a chance.[80]

Rachel’s grudge burned out a good deal faster than Jessica’s did. By the sleepover in Pillow Talk she is annoyed to find Tess there but not enough to leave, and she settles for smacking her under the tail and christening her “hoebag.”[2] The two would go on to coexist, with Rachel no longer needing to torment her beyond the odd “bitch,”[81] and Tess comfortable enough in the arrangement to laugh out loud at Rachel’s fumbling prom invitation.[48] In the end, Rachel would be able to wish Tess luck upon her graduation in Class of 2008. She does it her own way, of course, bellowing one last insult across the crowd before dropping the act with a quiet “Good luck, Tess.”[52]

Daisy

Rachel gives Daisy a decidedly indiscreet reminder of her last party.

Rachel adopted Daisy more or less on sight. She and Jessica first took note of her when Daisy snapped back at Paulo in A Different Side, and they thanked her by whisking her off shopping. At the mall Rachel quizzed her about her crush and pronounced a long-distance boyfriend as good as single.[35][36] Daisy has called her “Rachie” ever since.[36] The next summer Rachel’s teasing of Abbey about liking Daisy nudged the two of them into a relationship,[37] and come fall she and Jessica were sitting at Daisy’s lunch table.[38] On the cheer squad, the two seniors cheer under Daisy’s captaincy and take their cues from her at practice.[61]

Rachel has had two decent excuses to hold something against Daisy, and she has passed on both. Daisy had a hand in souring Rachel’s birthday party in Happy Hour, and when she apologizes in Moments Apart, Rachel waves it off and rallies a group hug for the heartbroken birthday girl,[12][59] then points her toward Paulo.[82] That last part is the second excuse. One would think Rachel would mind Daisy ending up with her previous flame, but she had seen it coming for a while, smirking as she handed Paulo the phone to talk to Daisy back in Golden Hour.[54] In Third Wheel she tells Daisy plainly that there’s no ill will, since she figured the two of them “would naturally gravitate towards each other” once Lucy didn’t work out.[64] What a gal!

Matt

Even chestnuts get a second chance when Rachel and Matt are together.

Rachel and Matt’s friendship begins in the Bittersweet Club International comic Blind Date, and it begins with a rescue. After Matt earns the ire of bully-era Tess by bumping into her, Rachel sweeps in and asks “Martin” to hand over the homework he owed her.[16] When he remembers her as the school’s best science student, Rachel is smitten; soon she is declaring herself in love to Jessica.[5] Months later, Jessica notices Matt looking at Jordan and realizes this will go nowhere. She keeps quiet.[32] The oblivious Jordan, meanwhile, pushes Matt to accept Rachel’s movie invitation, which he does while privately telling himself it’s just a phase.[83] Veronica has said this is where the two become friends and Rachel introduces him to Jessica and Jordan.[84]

By the main comic Rachel knows the truth about Matt, and she has made herself his chosen family. The two carry on like flirtatious sweethearts in front of Paulo while she guards Matt’s secret, admitting only that she once barked up that tree and that she’ll “never be man enough for him.”[46][85] She yanks Paulo’s ear for being rude to Matt in Boy Toy with the reminder that “He deals with way more than you know,”[18] and shushes Jessica for floating Jordan as a rebound within Matt’s earshot.[11] Her biggest show of support comes at the beach house in Golden Hour. She scolds him for researching colleges on vacation, and then decides the two of them should apply everywhere together and share an apartment. On top of that, she promises him that he will never have to worry about a place to stay.[28][86]

Of course, not every interaction is Rachel showing her allyship; a lot of the time they’re just a comedy double act. They gather chestnuts together in New Year’s Resolution[13] and stage a mock lament over poor, fun-deprived Augustus in Double Down.[87] They team up against Jessica’s script in Method Acting, right up until Matt starts playing peacemaker and Rachel tells him to grow a spine,[19] and by Participation Trophy they’re happily speculating about their own play characters’ social lives.[88]

Minor relationships

Jordan

Jordan helps Rachel recruit another passenger before the morning commute can get any quieter.

Rachel once said to Paulo that she likes her boys “cute and pathetic,”[22] and Lucy’s older brother has not entirely escaped her notice. Veronica has said Rachel has a crush on Jordan and would welcome his interest.[84] Her “Jordie” has been in her circle since freshman year alongside Jessica and eventually Matt.[63][32] When Jessica reminds her in Love Again that Jordan is still available, Rachel shushes her, because they’re both standing in front of Matt.[11] At prom, though, she leaves Matt to console Jordan after Tiff walks off and pulls Paulo inside instead.[89] She hollers Jordan into the van in Double Down like a big sister collecting a straggler.[63]

Madison

Madison’s offer of a free horror night catches Rachel mid-brood in Love Again.

Rachel had a hand in Madison and Jessica getting together in the first place. In the BCI comic Love Letters, she consoles a mopey Madison and catches on quickly that she is crushing hard on Jessica. She lets slip that “She likes girls, you know,” and then badgers Madison into asking Jessica to junior prom with a lunch bet riding on it.[90][91] The pushing must have worked, since the two are a couple by Golden Hour, where Rachel amuses herself by dangling the fact that Jessica’s previous crush, a certain Khao Manee, suggests Madison fits a “type.”[68] She means it in good fun, and she checks that Madison is comfortable with inviting Lucy to the mall in Double Down.[92]

Madison, in turn, watches out for Rachel more fiercely than Rachel would like. She confronts Paulo over how he treated her,[93] and only backs down from him in Moments Apart when Rachel insists.[77] The favor isn’t always returned gracefully. During the Method Acting blowup Rachel snaps at Madison to shut up because none of it affects her, having just pointed out that Madison’s own play character was written without a flaw.[69][19] In Participation Trophy, Madison can only stare as David’s praise turns Rachel into a fan of the play.[21]

Augustus

In Line in the Sand, Rachel finds Augustus tasty, which is not the compliment he was hoping for.

Out of the way, Jordan — Rachel’s got a new white cat to drool over! Now that the Siamese is spending time with their group, Rachel has been awfully curious about him. When he jokes that he doesn’t know what “fun” is, she and Matt play along with suggestions such as teaching him to ride Rachel’s bike and helping him hit his first home run, to Augustus’s chagrin.[87] She cheerfully addresses him whenever he appears, from his own name[94] to nicknames such as “emo kid”[63] and “Auggie”.[65] Something might be brewing on Rachel’s end as well; in Line in the Sand she coaxes Augustus into the seat next to her so she can get a proper look at him. When she smirks and calls him “tasty”, Augustus starts to wonder if he picked the right seat...[95] Veronica, for what it’s worth, has jokingly cheered that Rachel has a chance, while noting it’s a shame the two of them can’t reproduce.[96]

Mike

Rachel promises Mike that everything will be okay, even with Paulo watching.

Known to Rachel more as Paulo’s friend, Mike has consistently stayed off Rachel’s love radar because he’s taken and because he has plenty of confidence in himself already.[22] They get to know each other at Rachel’s birthday party in Happy Hour, which takes a turn for the worse when Mike and Paulo fight.[45] Rachel is not entirely innocent here, since she is the one who poured him the pink drink that got him there.[97] Regardless, Rachel comforts the crying Mike, but leaves Paulo to take care of him,[8] and hugs him on his way out with a promise that things will be okay.[98] None of this shook her otherwise good impression of him, and she calls him “a good kid” in Boy Toy when talking to Paulo.[99] In Moments Apart, she reassures both Mike and Daisy that everything is fine when both apologize for the party.[12]
