Tess joins the freshman lunch table at Roseville High School as a junior and stays with them for her last two years there. Partly this is because every other table is full. It also helps that these new kids don’t know what she did as a sophomore. She is loaded, and about as generous with her opinions as she is with her money. She runs the parties, books the holidays, and plays big sister to Lucy and Paulo whether they asked for one or not. Her old life as Roger’s girlfriend and enforcer catches up with her partway through the year, and she spends the rest of high school living it down in front of everyone. She also gave Mike his orange-and-yellow striped scarf.

Personality

Tess arrives at the freshman table two grades older than everyone sitting at it, and she acts like it. She hands out party invitations with threats attached, tips carollers fifty dollars, and settles arguments by picking people up and moving them somewhere else. She flirts with Paulo like it’s a hobby and then lectures him about keeping his hands off Lucy before he has recovered. Her grades are a mess, her house has pillars, and her idea of a group holiday is a week at an island resort with the rooms sorted by gender. She is also the girl who takes a detour so that certain sophomores won’t see her, and who cries at her own surprise party because she isn’t used to friends doing that much for her.

Tess admits the ugly version before anyone can flatter her.

Tess can give a brutally unflattering account of her sophomore year. After Noah pins her against a wall, she tells Abbey that she and Roger made his life miserable, and that “you can’t say I don’t deserve it..”[1] When the room turns on Jessica at a sleepover after Lucy repeats sexual rumors about her, Tess stops it and takes the blame herself.[2] She still balks at Jessica’s account of her cruelty: “I wasn’t THAT rough on you.. was I?”[3] Near graduation Paulo tries to wave the whole business off as rumor, and she won’t let him. She allows that things might have gone differently without Roger, then insists she really was awful and wouldn’t blame anyone who still had it out for her.[4] The flashbacks in Pillow Talk do nothing to contradict her.

When the past comes calling, Tess takes a detour. For weeks she walks home through the freshman hallway and tells Paulo it’s closer to her bus stop.[5][6] After she finally confesses, she skips lunch to avoid the fallout. Paulo is angrier that she kept quiet than about anything she actually did.[7] She does move when somebody gives her a shove, though. Abbey tells her to start slow and she phones Paulo as soon as Abbey leaves.[1] She sits Mike and Lucy down and tells them everything,[8] and at the sleepover she is the one urging Jessica to say out loud why she hates her.[9]

Tess catches trouble before ordering everyone indoors.

Tess shows affection mostly by manhandling people. When Mike and Lucy decline her holiday invitation, she stuffs them both into a car trunk to demand an explanation.[10][11] When Mike’s plans with Sandy collapse, she hugs him,[12] then shakes him and orders him to be selfish for once.[13] She books four hotel rooms and announces that none of them will be coed,[14] hauls a sulking Abbey onto the dance floor,[15] and catches a snowball bare-handed before ordering everyone indoors.[16] She looks after people the same way. She warns Paulo off the senior girls at their first lunch together,[17] polices his hands around Lucy at Christmas,[18] and interrogates a stranger about his age for chatting Lucy up at a restaurant.[19] Her aim is rather worse than her intentions. She kicks an innocent photographer at prom over a creep’s photo,[20] and announces to the class that Mike once tried to drown Lucy.[21]

She flirts like a girl who knows exactly how old she is and exactly how old Paulo isn’t. She whispers him rewards for good behaviour,[18] promises he might help her out of her prom dress if he’s a very good boy,[22] and tells him he doesn’t look half bad in a fast-food uniform.[23] She talks a good game about boundaries, too. Prom is “just as friends”,[24] the holiday rooms are single-sex,[14] and in senior-year girl talk he is a really cool, funny, handsome kid, but still a kid.[25] Paulo, who gets told she doesn’t like him that way and then that he owes her his fidelity, eventually asks her to make up her mind.[26][27]

Tess has plenty of money to throw around, and it shows. She tips carollers fifty dollars[28] and brings her friends along for a whole week at Silvershore, paid for by her parents as her senior-year present.[29] She even offers to fly Mike to see Sandy.[30] All the same, she is genuinely upset when Lucy suggests she just bribe the teacher, “rich girl”.[31] School gets the same treatment for as long as she can get away with it. Her notes are a scribble, her grades are poor, and Daisy’s diagnosis is two words long: “Just lazy.”[32] By the next school year she is the one arriving at school alone with an SAT book,[33] thanking her tutors for their help,[34][35] and lying in bed with a university acceptance letter, not looking especially happy about it.[36]

Tess takes endings harder than she lets on. At the last freshman lunch she is the one worrying whether they’ll even share a lunch period next year,[37] and she walks the senior halls hoping her friends move on without forgetting her.[38] She spends her eighteenth birthday in tears because she isn’t used to friends doing that much for her.[39] Visiting Paulo in hospital, she tells him she had expected to be a loner until graduation,[4] and she calls it a shame everyone is going their separate ways a month before she does exactly that.[40] Her fix for all of it is the internet,[41] which is about as Tess an answer as you could ask for.

Appearance

Tess is a golden-furred cat with a figure the freshman boys notice before she has finished walking through the door.[42] Her hair does most of the storytelling, since it changes every school year. As a younger girl she wore it long and brown.[38] In her Roger days she added a pink streak and dressed the part, with a studded choker, a stack of bracelets on one arm, stud earrings, a dark tank top and a short pleated skirt with a chunky belt.[43][44] The look came with a cigarette in one hand and a switchblade for other people’s kickballs.[43] By the time she walks into the freshman homeroom she has pink ringlets instead of the long dark hair.[42] Noah reads the haircut as an attempt to hide.[6] On the first day of senior year she has a short pink bob.[33] Veronica pins the annual redesign squarely on Tess’s original creator: “THAT IS LILY’S FAULT NOT MINE.”[38]

Junior-year Tess wears a locket, which Paulo is fondling within a minute of meeting her[42] and which she clutches when the word “swimming” comes up.[21] She dresses for occasions. Her Christmas party gets a festive dress, a star necklace and jingle bells in her hair,[45] and prom gets a floor-length ballgown with an updo and wrist corsage.[46] The following December she hosts in a Santa dress,[16] and she graduates in a black cap and gown.[47] Veronica’s commentary calls her “such a challenge to draw” and wonders aloud why she couldn’t be bald and simple like everyone else.[42]

Before the comic

Tess admits that the rumours were hers in Pillow Talk.

Tess’s first two years at Roseville High School are recounted in flashbacks and gossip. At her junior prom, other students recall a senior taking her to a dance when she was a freshman; Tess calls the earlier dance her own dumb fault.[48][49] As a sophomore she dated Roger and helped him terrorize the freshmen.[50] Their victims included Rachel’s brother Aaron and Jessica, whose humiliation Tess helped arrange.[43][51]

Junior year

Tess walks into the freshman homeroom in Enter High School ten minutes early and gets hit on by David and Paulo before she has sat down.[42] At lunch she asks to join their table because every other table is full.[17] In Left Behind she brings a freezing Mike home for cocoa and sends him off wearing her scarf.[52][53] She hosts the gang’s Christmas party at her mansion in Feline Festivities,[45] and in Midterm Time Daisy tutors her through the exams.[32]

The pep rally gives Tess a microphone, then gives her no mercy in A Different Side.

Augustus starts challenging Tess about her past in Follow Me, and Rachel confronts her over Aaron’s injury.[54][5] After Abbey rescues her from Noah’s attack in Under Pressure, Tess confesses to Paulo.[1] The hostility continues in A Different Side: Jay targets her in kickball while the gym teacher praises his shot, and Paulo walks her out.[55][56] Sent onstage to represent the winning student team at the pep rally, she tries to apologize, only to be booed and hit with a soda can. She gives up with “Go, team.”[57][58] She also tells Mike and Lucy what happened.[8]

At junior prom in Love My Way, Tess and Paulo admit their feelings, though Tess refuses to start a relationship.[59] At the end of the year in Moving On, she spots Roger flirting with a graduating girl and walks away smiling.[60]

Summer at Silvershore

After the hike goes wrong, Tess knows exactly whom to blame.

Tess’s parents pay for a week at the Silvershore Islands as her senior-year gift, and in Invitation she makes attendance mandatory, to the point of kidnapping Mike and Lucy in her car trunk.[29][10] At the resort in Arrival she assigns single-sex rooms and rooms with Lucy.[61] The hike in Search and Rescue, which she had billed as a nature stroll, ends with Mike falling and Tess blaming Paulo for it.[62][63] Truth or dare in Intervention drags her feelings for Paulo back into the open, and the two end up alone in a hotel room in Return before he thinks better of it.[64][65]

Senior year

Tess starts her final year in A Distance Apart, arriving at school alone with an SAT book. Augustus startles her, but tells her she is of no concern to him and wishes her a safe year.[33][66] Jessica and Rachel, now juniors, join the lunch table too.[67] Tess refuses Sue’s attempt to draft her for student council president in Feline Filibuster, but moderates the secretaries’ debate.[68][69] At Daisy’s sleepover in Pillow Talk, she asks Jessica to explain their history to the others.[9]

Her friends surprise her with an eighteenth-birthday party in Fade Away.[39] She hosts Christmas in At Loose Ends and New Year’s in Ten Seconds to Midnight, where she helps Paulo face his feelings about Jasmine.[70][71] In the spring she treats Daisy and Mike to Burger-Tron and finds Paulo behind the counter in Small Fry,[35][23] supervises his driving to a forest park in Scenic Route,[72] and lies awake afterwards with her university acceptance letter.[36] After his disastrous prom in Total Recall she visits him in hospital.[4]

Tess leaves Roseville with a wave, and rather more goodwill than she expected.

In Class of 2008, Tess graduates from Roseville High to cheers rather than the boos she expected.[73][74] Daisy shoos her off toward her senior friends, and she leaves with a wave.[75][76]

After graduation

Paulo remembers Tess, whose graduation puts an end to their island rides.

Tess remains in touch after leaving school. Paulo pictures her when he laments that their ride graduated in New Year’s Resolution,[77] and Jessica’s play dramatizes Tess’s bullying.[78] Later, in Third Wheel, Tess is on the other end of Daisy’s phone, cackling that it’s about time Daisy and Paulo got together.[79]

Major relationships

Paulo

In Love My Way, friendship offers no protection from a goodbye this painful.

Tess settles into being Paulo’s nagging older friend, albeit one who kisses him now and then. Her reward kiss at the Christmas party knocks him flat and leaves him declaring himself in love,[80] and she still accepts his rose for prom on the condition that it’s just friends.[24] At their table in Love My Way he asks whether he measures up to her exes, and she tells him “Paulo, you’re just a kid!!”, that next year is her last, and that they would only drift apart.[81] On the dance floor she admits she has fallen for him too, and that this is exactly why it hurts.[59] They kiss, cry into each other, and the scene fades out. Veronica’s commentary calls it a send-off for the ship and notes they are at such different stages of their lives.[81][82]

On the Silvershore trip Tess wants a boyfriend’s loyalty from a boy she keeps insisting isn’t her boyfriend. Under truth or dare she names him as the person she’d rather have lost her virginity to.[64] Then she tells him she doesn’t like him that way and demands to know how she could trust him when he flirts with every girl on the beach, and he explodes that they aren’t a couple.[26] They end up kissing in a hotel room anyway,[83] and it is Paulo who gets cold feet over Daisy and calls himself lucky Tess was understanding.[65] Senior year makes the whole tangle sadder. When Jessica and Rachel use him to get at her, she and Lucy end up screaming that he’s a man whore in unison, and Paulo, not unreasonably, tells her to make up her mind.[84][27]

While Paulo is dating Jasmine, Tess also finds a role as his coach, which suits them both better. She smiles to hear about Jazz at her birthday,[85] and at her New Year’s party she notices his unease and walks him, question by question, to admitting he loves Lucy more than he ever loved her. Her verdict is “I think you know what you have to do.”[71] She sits with him in hospital after his prom while he gets jealous of her senior friends,[40] and at graduation he concedes “Guess you were right.” before she kisses his forehead and says she’ll miss him too.[86] She heads his list of relationships that moved too fast,[87] and Veronica has said David hated the whole ship because Paulo turned into a groveler around her.[88]

Jessica and Rachel

Jessica and Rachel have grievances Tess can’t simply dismiss, however much she wants them to leave her alone. In the Pillow Talk flashbacks, sophomore Tess stabs Aaron’s kickball with a switchblade and laughs while Roger kicks him.[43] She then tells a freshman Jessica that the rumors calling her desperate and pathetic were hers, blowjob included. She slams her into the lockers and points out that the girl who just made her the school slut is completely untouchable, signing off with “Hope that helps.”[51][89] An official Tumblr answer identifies Roger as the one who broke Aaron’s arm, but calls Tess the instigator and the worse of the two.[90]

Across her last two school years the pair punish her, and she treats it as a debt coming due. Rachel slaps her in the freshman hallway over her brother’s arm,[5] the two of them sneer at her sweet-little-girl act,[56] Jessica boos her at the pep rally,[58] and once they share a lunch period Rachel’s standard greeting is “HEY, BITCH~”.[68] Then they go after her through Paulo, dating him and sleeping with him to hurt her, and telling her so to her face.[91][92] Tess gets angry with all three of them. At Daisy’s sleepover Rachel calls the dates “pretend”, though the sex was real;[93] her interest in Paulo proves to be real too.[94] When Lucy tries to beat Jessica up later that night, Tess holds her back, says the fault is hers, and asks Jessica to tell the whole room why she hates her.[2][9]

At graduation the pair offer Tess a ceasefire rather than forgiveness, and she takes it gladly. Rachel’s usual greeting turns into “Good luck, Tess.” in Class of 2008,[95] and Jessica manages a single flat “Boo.” before admitting she’s kidding and wishing her luck too.[74] Veronica’s commentary notes that this is the most anyone gets out of Jessica.[74] The following school year, Jessica writes a play that dramatizes the whole affair.[78]

Daisy

Daisy’s tutoring service is quite different when you’re Tess.

Tess needs Daisy rather more than she would like to admit, starting with her grades. She writes Daisy off as an annoying brainiac on the first day.[96] In Midterm Time Daisy takes one look at her notes and diagnoses her as lazy rather than stupid. She then drills her with a ruler until Tess walks out of an exam more sure of herself than she has ever been. Daisy, meanwhile, forgets to study for her own test and wails that Tess has ruined her.[32][97] The tutoring continues into Tess’s senior year, with Tess still thanking her for study help and paying her back in burgers.[34][35]

Daisy’s jealousy of Tess does not stop her caring about her. When Augustus tells her about Tess’s past, she is horrified, but immediately worries how lonely Tess must feel and insists she has changed.[98] When Paulo defends Tess at the pep rally, Daisy rounds on him: “What about those of us who never NEEDED a second chance?”[58] It is also Daisy who invites Tess to the sleepover over Jessica’s objection,[99] who calls her Tessie throughout, teases her to ask Paulo out,[25] and at graduation shoos her off toward her senior friends.[75] Tess returns the favour by needling Daisy and Abbey about their love life, a joke Abbey catches and Daisy misses entirely,[34] and she is still on Daisy’s phone list after graduation when Daisy finally gets together with Paulo.[79]

Lucy

Lucy insists she is only going so Tess will survive the disappointment.

Tess decides Lucy is fascinating early on and spends the rest of high school trying to get closer, mostly by force. She is already wondering what made her so guarded in Left Behind,[52] and her attempt to get Lucy singing earns her a karate chop at the Christmas party.[28] The following summer she hears Lucy singing and gets shoved out of the hotel room for listening.[100] The kidnapping in Invitation gets her a kick in the face, and her offer to fly Mike to Sandy gets her arm twisted with an audible snap while she pleads to be allowed to help.[11][101] Lucy finally agrees to the trip, claiming it’s so Tess won’t kill herself over the disappointment.[13]

Lucy won’t soften the verdict on Tess, and Tess listens anyway. When she hears the story, Lucy calls her a “total bitch”, tells her she isn’t entitled to anyone’s forgiveness, and advises her that if she can’t change people’s minds she should just move on.[8] Asked whether the friends respect her less now, Mike says not at all and Lucy says “A bit.”, and Tess wonders why Lucy doesn’t count herself among those friends.[102] Tess takes the advice, and she is still in Lucy’s corner during senior year, not particularly quietly. She storms the boys’ table on her behalf when Mike turns her down,[103] holds her back from Jessica,[2] and tells Mike off for freezing her out on the track.[104] At her Christmas party, drunk Tess even bellows for Lushy when Lucy isn’t there.[70]

Minor relationships

Abbey

In Under Pressure, Abbey refuses to let Tess mistake abuse for justice.

Abbey changes Tess’s year in one conversation. He hears her screaming in an empty hallway, punches Noah off her, and when she tells him she deserved it he shouts “No, you DON’T deserve it!” and pushes her to tell her friends before someone else does.[105][1] She calls Paulo as soon as Abbey leaves. He remembers the attack during his anti-bullying speech at the student council debate.[106] Tess repays him by dragging him onto the dance floor at Christmas[15] and teasing him about a night in with Daisy until he blushes.[34]

Mike

Mike discovers that Tess’s guilt trips come with head pats.

Tess treats Mike as the reasonable one, which mostly means she bosses him around. She takes him home for cocoa on a freezing day, trades it for Lucy’s history, and sends him off in her orange-and-yellow striped scarf because he needs it more than she does.[52][53] When he eventually replaces it, she stages a wounded guilt trip before grinning and petting his head.[107] She calls him “Mikie”,[18] hugs him and then shakes him into accepting a free holiday,[12][13] and takes him to task over Lucy, both for rejecting her and for freezing her out.[103][104] He calls her a great person at graduation.[74]

Roger

Roger’s name hangs over much of what Tess spends her last two school years living down. In her sophomore year he was her boyfriend and her muscle. She boasted that he would do anything for her and rough up anyone who looked at her wrong.[89] At the end of her junior year she spots him flirting with a graduating girl, smiles, and thinks “Goodbye, Roger.”[60] She allows later that things might have gone differently without him, without letting that excuse her.[4]

  • Tess was created by Veronica’s friend Lily and given to her as a gift. Veronica’s commentary on her debut admits she didn’t know what to do with her at first.[42]
  • When a fan pointed out that Tess was born in the 1980s as a way to feel old, Veronica’s reply was that she was born in the 80s herself.[108]
