Jordan is Lucy’s older brother, a lovesick senior on the Roseville High School basketball team who rounds out Rachel’s friend group alongside his best friend Matt. At home he is the self-declared favourite child and a first-rate pest, at least until his little sister is in real trouble, when he turns into the most protective cat in the house and comfortably the least intimidating. He spends junior and senior year buying dinners for Tiff while she refuses to treat the arrangement as a relationship.

Personality

Jordan is the kind of cat who arrives already mid-sentence, headphones on far too loud and a toy basketball in hand, announcing himself as the family’s shiniest star. He’s a jock who struggles through his SAT prep, a big brother who threatens people nobody finds threatening, and a hopeless romantic devoted to a girl who is mostly interested in his wallet. He’s mean to his sister over dinner and completely undone when she’s actually hurting. He can be cheerfully oblivious to what is happening around him, his best friend included.

Jordan tries to make romance look casual while Tiff barely looks up.

Jordan needs almost nothing to keep pining for Tiff, and he doesn’t mind a bit. Asked at prom what he actually likes about her, he can name two things: she’s pretty, “And her hair smells nice.”[1] He pays for the dinners while she flirts with the waiter, and reads their never having made things official as a sign that she is about to say yes.[1] He watches her ride off on someone else’s motorcycle while insisting there has always been a connection between them.[2][3] Veronica’s commentary calls him the ever romantic, and pictures him crying during Disney movies.[4]

Jordan’s threatening presence survives only until somebody gets to know him.

Jordan talks bigger than his self-confidence lasts. He asks Paulo at prom how he does it, because he doesn’t think any girls take him seriously,[5] and when Jessica and Rachel call him cute he assumes they’re making fun of him.[6] After Tiff walks out on the Burger-Tron lunch he slams the table and demands to know what makes him so unlikable,[7] then wonders aloud whether dying alone would really be so bad.[8] Then again, this is the same cat who poses over an SAT book and asks Matt whether a face like his doesn’t deserve a little sugar.[9]

Nobody gets near Lucy when she’s hurting, at least not if Jordan reaches the door first. He shoves Paulo down the stairs and out of the house,[10] slams the door on her entire friend group at once,[11] and a year later grabs Paulo in a bowling-alley bathroom to warn him off her.[12] None of this frightens anybody. When Sue points out he isn’t much of an intimidating presence, he protests “I can be threatening! I’ve been REALLY angry before!”, and Lucy adds that he’s far too much of a dork for the job.[13] Veronica’s commentary on the prom chapter simply suggests someone give him a swirlie.[14]

He is also slow on the uptake, and more forgiving than most people would be. Paulo flirting with him in a bathroom registers as somebody who needs directions to a stall with toilet paper,[15] and he is the last of his close friends to find out his best friend likes him.[8] When he does catch on to somebody’s mess he tends to take their side. He tells Matt that Paulo is lost and confused, and that if Paulo has to be a dumbass about his feelings he’d rather it be with him than anyone else.[16] School is another matter, though not for lack of trying. He bombed the SAT once,[17] works himself into a sweat over a practice test only for Augustus to find wrong answers,[18] despairs over his retake,[19] and is rejected by his fallback college.[20] Veronica has said he doesn’t really want a major at all and mainly wants to play basketball, with social or physical work as a likely fallback.[21]

Appearance

Jordan is a white Khao Manee cat, like the rest of his family, with one green eye and one blue eye.[22] That wasn’t always the plan. Veronica has said he, Sam and their father were all blue-eyed in the original story, and the heterochromia only came in once she had settled on Lucy’s breed.[23] He’s short for a basketball player, as Paulo is happy to remind him,[24] though Veronica’s commentary notes he is still taller than Mike, at least.[24]

Jordan’s Thriller outfit is considerably more alarming than his mother’s Halloween plans.

His headphones are the closest thing he has to a signature accessory, blaring at the dinner table in Dinner Time[25] and slung around his neck in Veronica’s sketch of the senior group.[26] His old blue basketball hoodie, the one with the starred ball on the front, ends up on Augustus once he moves in.[27][28][29] For special occasions he dresses up a bit. Prom gets a black suit with a red rose on the lapel and no tie,[30] and Halloween gets a full red-leather Thriller outfit.[31] Less by choice, he spends the days after prom in an arm sling with a bruised cheek.[32]

Significant events

Junior year

Jordan hovers at the edge of the story for a long while before anyone gets a proper look at him. In Simple Pleasures he’s the family member Lucy’s pets cling to on her way out the door,[33] and in Rehearsal he opens her bedroom door to call her for dinner, finds her twirling in a pink dress, and very quietly backs out again.[34] Dinner Time finally sits him down at the table, where he bounces a toy basketball off his mother’s head and claims he set the table because he’s the favourite.[25][35] The siblings then take turns ratting each other out, his Friday party plans against her sleepover at Paulo’s, until their mother grounds the pair of them until they’re thirty.[36][37]

Once Lucy stops going to school that winter, Jordan takes up a post at the front door. He shoves Paulo out of the house on her birthday in Piece of Cake,[10] sits with his mother and Sam on New Year’s Eve while she agonises over sending Lucy away,[38] and slams the door on the whole friend group in Breaking Up.[11] Mike follows him down the street afterwards, and the confrontation ends with Jordan in tears.[39]

Prom in Total Recall goes badly and then worse. Tiff uses his limo and leaves for another party,[40] Paulo talks him into dancing with Roxy instead,[24] and on the drive home an oncoming car hits Matt’s car. Jordan later describes them as having been T-boned.[41][42] There’s a Chance, a chapter only found in Volume Five, picks him up with an arm in a sling, mainly glad that basketball season is over.[32]

Senior year

Lucy comes home in Love Again, and Jordan is waiting to walk her back from school.[43] In the same chapter he corners Augustus, now living in the family’s downstairs bedroom, and trades him a pass on the big-brother talk for SAT tutoring.[17] Test Dummy shows him taking the work seriously enough to sweat over a practice test, even if Augustus immediately finds mistakes,[18] and in College Material he retakes the SAT with Lucy and Daisy and walks out convinced his chances at anything are gone.[19]

Lucy tries to make Jordan’s rejection letter sound less final in Made Fresh.

By winter his Fridays belong to English tutoring with Matt,[44] while his home life has made him more alert to Lucy than he used to be. In Double Down he drops a mall trip once Augustus’s concern makes clear that Lucy is hiding how badly she is doing, then hugs her in the hallway and tells her she can depend on him too.[45][46] The Burger-Tron double date in Made Fresh finally ends his pursuit of Tiff and, in the fallout, Paulo lets slip that Matt has a crush on him.[47][8] He gets home to a thin rejection letter from his fallback college and watches Augustus collect three thick envelopes of his own.[20][48]

Major relationships

Lucy

Jordan’s declaration of love comes with the usual cheek-pinching.

At home Jordan and Lucy fight like siblings who are far too alike. He greets her with a swooning “Mikie” impression and gets slapped for it,[49] she calls him a suck-up and predicts community college,[35][50] and when she leaves the table in tears he shrugs that she’s probably on her period.[51] Veronica’s commentary says he was brought into Dinner Time precisely because he’s too obnoxious to let Lucy stay depressed for long.[35] Fans have since diagnosed both siblings with the “yearning gene”, and Veronica agrees Lucy would be humiliated by the comparison and unable to argue with it.[52]

None of that survives her actually being in trouble. It’s Jordan who tells the family that Lucy is the one who needs help,[38] and Jordan who, after barring her friends from the house, breaks down in front of Mike with “I don’t want to lose my little sister..”[39] Once she’s home he wants to walk her back from school,[43] and in Double Down he abandons the mall plans once Augustus’s worry makes clear that Lucy is hiding something serious, reminding her what happened the last time he left her alone.[45] He hugs her in the hallway and orders her to be as needy as she wants.[46] Lucy laughs that she’d forgotten how corny he can be, and he answers that her corny bro loves her regardless.[53] By Made Fresh she is the one consoling him over his rejection letter, though she still won’t say a kind word about Tiff.[54][20]

Tiff

Tiff has a ride with Enrique, but Jordan still looks as though this relationship is negotiable.

Jordan treats Tiff’s indifference as a negotiable obstacle for years. He is already pursuing her in junior year, when Lucy is appalled to hear he’s still hung up on her.[55] At prom Tiff asks whether the limo can swing by for Enrique, then runs off almost as soon as they arrive, leaving Jordan with his arm around empty air.[56][14] Flashbacks show him paying for dinner after dinner while she flirts with the waiter, and he remains confident she’s about to make things official.[1] After the crash, Tiff tells him he looks like shit, says she was lucky to leave early, then tells him she hopes he gets better; Jordan beams that she really cares.[42][57]

Everyone around him has given up on Tiff, which only makes him defend her harder. At the senior lunch table he asks whether they can make room for her,[58] and he storms at Jessica for writing her as a villain in the school play, even though Tiff thought it was hilarious.[59][60] When Madison says nobody likes Tiff, his answer is simply “I like Tiff.”[61] The Burger-Tron lunch in Made Fresh is where it finally runs out of road. Tiff tells him it isn’t a date, calls wanting forever with someone kind of pathetic, and leaves to meet Enrique.[62][63] When Daisy blurts out that Jordan loves her, Tiff shrugs “So? Takes two to tango. Thanks for lunch.”[47] Veronica considers their story done for now, though the two of them can still turn up.[64]

Matt

Matt gets the easy conversation he has always wanted, even if Jordan sees only friendship.

Matt has had feelings for Jordan since freshman year, and by senior year most of the people around them have worked it out except Jordan. Blind Date, which Veronica explicitly uses as part of the continuity for their freshman-year friend group,[26] has Matt daydreaming about him and ends with Jordan hoping he’ll one day find somebody who likes him that much.[65][66] The main comic later shows Matt blushing as he helps pick up Jordan’s dropped books.[67] In Fair Game he tells Paulo that Jordan has pulled him out of some really dark places, that he is always there when Matt needs him, and that a boy who fusses over Tiff like that cannot be interested in him.[68][69]

Jordan, meanwhile, thanks Matt for believing in him during their tutoring nights[44] and wonders aloud whether he ought to set Matt up with Paulo.[70] He is comfortable enough with Matt to talk through Paulo’s bathroom stunt in Sugar Substitute, but remains oblivious when Matt’s reaction all but gives his crush away.[16][9]

When Paulo finally blurts the secret out in Made Fresh, Jordan’s first instinct is to fix it through sheer effort. He asks whether that makes him Matt’s first love, decides a first love is a true love,[4] asks how easy it is to become gay,[71] and sits there chanting “I like Matt back I like Matt back” until Paulo talks him down.[72] Veronica’s commentary notes he simply doesn’t want to break Matt’s heart,[71] and Paulo reminds him that he cannot force himself to like someone that way. Jordan settles where he started, agreeing that Matt is pretty great.[72] Veronica has also said what Matt gets out of it: Jordan’s optimism.[73]

Paulo

Paulo tries his usual charm on someone who would rather discuss bathroom supplies.

Jordan has thrown Paulo out of his house twice and asked him for dating advice twice, in roughly that order. Both ejections come in Piece of Cake. The first is a shove down the stairs and out the door, with a warning that none of Lucy’s friends are to go near her.[10] The second is at the front door, after Jordan recites Lucy’s own descriptions of the manwhore who keeps touching her.[74] Paulo’s revenge, when they meet at school again, is to shout down the hallway that he’s taller.[75]

Prom turns Paulo into a mentor, more or less by accident. Jordan asks how he does it with girls, and Paulo pumps him up, tells him to ditch the gold-digging bitches, and points him at Roxy.[5][24] Jordan thanks him sincerely in the car and, realising he’s poked at Paulo’s own heartbreak, apologises with a quiet “How it hurts.”[76] Their bowling-alley bathroom scene in Fair Game has all of it at once. Paulo flirts and gets nothing but helpfulness back, yells “SIKE!!” and claims only Lucy matters, gets grabbed by the chest for it, and is then asked for flirting lessons anyway.[15][12][77] By Made Fresh Jordan is recruiting Paulo as his double-date wingman, and it’s Paulo who tells him afterwards that there is someone out there who thinks he’s worth it.[78][72]

Minor relationships

Augustus

Jordan makes room for Augustus, whether the table needs it or not.

Jordan wants something from Augustus that Augustus can’t really give him, namely a passing SAT score. He declines to give the boy in the downstairs bedroom the scary-big-brother talk in Love Again and instead begs for help: “C’mon, you saved my sister, save me too!”[17] The tutoring goes about as well as Test Dummy suggests,[18] but Jordan keeps pulling him into the senior group anyway, insisting he really wanted them to hang out more[79] and leaping up to make space at a table that already had plenty.[80] Jordan protests when Augustus tells him flatly that Tiff sucks and again when Augustus collects three thick envelopes to Jordan’s one thin one.[54][48]

Mike

Jordan blames Mike for Lucy leaving. As Mike follows him down the street, Jordan tells him to stop, swings a punch that Mike dodges and catches, and tells him it’s all his fault before collapsing.[81][82] He hasn’t let it go by senior year, either. In Double Down he refuses to let Mike walk Lucy home[83] and bristles when Augustus mentions Michael.[84]

  • Veronica pictures the headphones at the dinner table in Dinner Time blasting “something super noisy like Rammstein”.[25]
  • Veronica has owned up to a continuity slip: Jordan’s line about Paulo having slept with two of Lucy’s friends was written before she decided he’d been friends with Jessica and Rachel since freshman year. She blames Matt being fleshed out so late.[26]
