Flower girl is a gentle dog in the same year as Mike, Lucy and David. The comic never gives her a proper name—even Lucy calls her simply “that flower girl”—but David has been pining after her since Roseville Middle School. She transfers to a private school during freshman year without ever quite realizing how obsessed he is.

Personality

Flower girl catches David before his enthusiasm can become someone else’s problem.

Flower girl is the kind of girl who goes along with whatever odd thing happens to be happening to her. Toss a boy at her and she’ll catch him; ask her to dance and she’ll say yes, even if you have just leapt at her from a punch bowl. She is easily flustered, rather agreeable, and later seen happily watering flowers by herself.

At the middle-school prom in Farewell, Middle School, David’s nonsensical invitation earns a blush and a cheerful “Oh okay!” before she lets him spin her until she goes limp and dizzy.[1] She is also surprisingly strong in the same scene, catching a leaping David overhead and then accidentally hurling him through a window.[1] She remains mostly oblivious to David’s crush. She recoils from Paulo’s pass and looks confused when David chases him off,[2] and she does not notice the two boys watching her from a bush in Onwards to Adventure.[3]

Appearance

In Pep Rally, Mike gives Flower Girl’s dress an unwanted lift.

Flower girl is a dog with long, curly ears topped with the flower hair clips that give her her epithet.[3] She wears a dress in Pep Rally[4] and a plaid skirt when she is out watering flowers in Onwards to Adventure.[3] David’s daydream version of her comes with a tiara, wing-shaped clips and a long fluttery dress, which is rather more than the real girl is ever shown wearing.[5] Veronica’s commentary on the redrawn version of that chapter notes she was pleased to keep a lot of the old expressions for her.[3]

Significant events

Flower girl’s debut in Pep Rally is a single panel. As Mike sprints for the gym exit, the gust from his running lifts her dress, and she gets out one startled yelp while David scowls at Mike for shame.[4] She also turns up in Left Behind, among the girls in Lucy’s kindergarten class in the flashback to Lucy’s first day.[6]

Lucy explains that David’s great lost love has only changed schools.

Her real moment comes in Farewell, Middle School, where the flashbacks to the middle-school prom reveal that David finally danced with his crush and how he came to be bandaged on Monday.[1] Months later, in Onwards to Adventure, David’s birthday mission is built around watching her water flowers on a Roseville street.[3] The chapter ends with Lucy revealing that she has already transferred to the private school up the road.[7] A later what-if strip in Ships Ahoy, Season Six returns to her alone with a garden hose and thinking about David.[8]

David

David adores Flower girl with his whole heart. The joke in the main comic is how little she seems to realize just how fixated he is. At the prom in Farewell, Middle School he launches himself at her from the punch bowl, and she catches him, dances with him while he holds a rose in his teeth, and then throws him through a window by accident. He comes away convinced he got laid.[1] In Paulo’s flashback of the same night, David growls Paulo away from “my girl”, while the girl in question just looks puzzled.[2]

A few months of high school only make him worse. By Onwards to Adventure she has become a goddess in his head, and he spends his birthday spying on her from a bush with Justin.[5] He snaps at Justin for daring to look at his woman, while she waters her flowers without acknowledging either boy and is gone when David looks up again.[3] When he thinks he has lost her forever, Lucy sets him straight: she has only transferred, and “You can keep stalking her.”[7] Veronica has compared her role to Tiff’s for Jordan, with the difference that Tiff and Jordan actually interact.[9] The what-if strip Ships Ahoy, Season Six gives the pairing a wistful coda: she wishes he “coulda.. come up and said hello instead of leaving forever.”[8]

Minor relationships

Her only contact with Mike is the accidental dress-lift in Pep Rally, for which he does at least shout an apology.[4] Paulo tries his luck with her at the middle-school prom in Farewell, Middle School and gets no further than a recoil before David cuts in.[2]

Trivia

  • Veronica’s commentary on her one-panel debut in Pep Rally hails it as the debut of “the mysterious and wonderful flower girl”.[4]
  • The prom pages of Farewell, Middle School were originally scrapped from Unfulfilled Fantasy. Veronica revived them as their own chapter and wrote that she was glad Flower girl got to shine instead of staying an oblivious background character.[1]
