The anti-drama activist who somehow always ends up neck-deep in it, Sue is (sometimes) the main group’s voice of reason. A junior at Roseville High School, she splits her energy between the drama club, her SwordsVale guild, and whatever project she’s currently certain will fix everything. She has her own insecurities about being right and being accepted, but still pours plenty of energy into solving everyone else’s problems, whether they want her to or not.

Personality

Sue declares the final draft finished after defeating an entire army of crumpled pages.

Sue channels her problem-solving drive into big projects: coordinating SwordsVale gaming sessions and running the guild’s real-world meetings,[1] spearheading drama club productions, and even running for student council secretary in her sophomore year (though that particular campaign ended in defeat).[2]

Her tendency to get involved in others’ affairs often manifests in elaborate schemes. An active member of the drama club, Sue saw a way to kill two birds with one stone, crafting a script to help heal a rift between her friends. Just how helpful it was is up for discussion.[3] Still, when the indirect approach doesn’t work as well as she planned, she will reach out directly to her friends to offer support and apologies.[4][3]

For all that Sue does for her friends, she is bogged down by two glaring insecurities: the need to be right, and the need to be accepted. The need to be right tends to come out as bluffing. She butts heads with Paulo over the “correct” way to browse an art museum while privately finding the paintings a little lifeless herself.[5][6] She also fights tooth and nail over movie tickets for a book series she later admits she stopped reading halfway through.[7] To her credit, she knows the difference between bluffing and trying. As she puts it at the gallery, “I want to like them. And that’s the difference between you and me. I’m willing to put my mind to it.”[8]

The need to be accepted runs at least as deep. Sue advocates for body positivity, only to declare “I.. I AM NOT!!” when Paulo calls her fat.[9] Her longing for acceptance from her peers goes as far back as Out of the Frame, where she makes a club for being underappreciated, not even realizing she was already welcome at the lunch table.[10] Years later she’s just as shaken by the idea that she might be considered a “loser,”[11] going as far as auditioning for the cheer squad to prove the idea wrong in Popularity Contest.

Despite her apparent aversion to “drama,” Sue sure likes to stick her nose in other people’s business. Sometimes she wants to play fix-it, such as her play in Curtain Call meant to repair Mike and Lucy’s friendship. Other times, she’s just particularly nosy, like how she interrogates Abbey on his relationship status with Jasmine in Moments Apart.[12] The line between hating drama and feeding it is one she crosses cheerfully. At Silvershore she declares “Right. Enough drama for today,” then immediately starts a game of Truth or Dare, prompting Mike’s “From genuine drama to a game about CREATING drama..”[13] Veronica’s commentary on Out of the Frame teases her for envying Lucy’s table in the first place, noting that now she’s part of it, she’s stuck with it forever.[10]

When everyone else hesitates, Sue volunteers for the awkward part.

Scheming aside, Sue has plenty of nerve. At thirteen she lectured an adult mugger to his face and took a punch for it, then charged in again to protect Paulo and was choked and thrown into the trash.[14][15] When the whole group dithered outside Lucy’s house, she was the one who marched up and knocked.[16] She can also draw a line without a fight. When Mike turned on her in High Expectations, she didn’t fight back — she simply told him she couldn’t let him speak to her that way, and walked off.[17]

Appearance

Sue is a European Burmese cat[18] with tan fur, brown eyes, and long, straight hair. While she occasionally wears clothes, her usual accessory is a holly necklace.

In her early appearances, Sue sports a short, straight bob and a necklace with a round pendant. She wears her iconic holly necklace to the Christmas party in Feline Festivities,[19] and it has become her everyday accessory by Under Pressure.[20] Her hair grows longer during the Silvershore arc.[21]

Carmen Sandiego makes a house call in Witch Hunt.

Sue also enjoys a good costume, dressing as Ema Skye for Mischief Night[22] and as Carmen Sandiego for Witch Hunt,[23] plus convention cosplay alongside Stacy in Guest of Honor.[24] Since her cheer squad accident in Popularity Contest, she’s been getting around on crutches with a leg cast,[25] still present as of Tickets Please.[26]

Significant events

Middle school

Sue debuts in Unfit for Education, recruiting five volunteers for a thought-suppression experiment and instructing them not to think of a polar bear.[27] In Prom Preparation, she joins the girls asking Mike for a date, without success.[28]

Sue gets home from Confrontation with her story straight and bloodied tissues in her nose.

In Confrontation, Sue tries to reason with Alejandro and then protect Paulo from Toby, getting punched, choked, and thrown into the trash for her efforts.[14][15] Her mother drives the group home afterward, while Sue explains away their injuries as a fight between Mike and Lucy.[29]

Freshman year

Sue creates a club for “neglected background characters” in Out of the Frame, then abandons it on discovering she was already welcome at the lunch table.[10] During the summer trip to the Silvershore Islands, she fears Mike has died after his fall from a broken bridge in Search and Rescue,[30] and tearfully embraces him when he returns.[31]

Sophomore year

Sue sticks by her casting, despite the evidence arriving by slap.

In Casting Call, Sue finishes writing a play and casts Mike and Lucy as its leads, hoping to repair their friendship.[32][3]

Sue unveils a student council that sounds suspiciously like a personal fiefdom.

She also runs for student council secretary in Feline Filibuster, with plans for a council she can influence through McCain as vice president and Jasmine as treasurer.[33] Abbey withdraws from the race, and Daisy defeats Sue with Paulo’s enthusiastic support.[2][34]

The print-only Curtain Rising follows Sue and Jessica preparing for opening day.[35] Her production opens in Curtain Call; Lucy praises her work,[36] but the play does not bring about the lasting reconciliation Sue hoped for.[3] When the group learns Lucy is leaving in Breaking Up, Sue is the first to knock at her house.[16]

After Lucy’s departure, Sue confronts Mike during a study session[37] and quarrels with Paulo on the Critical Hit art museum trip.[8] Drunk at Rachel’s party in Happy Hour, she blames her play for keeping Lucy in Roseville longer than she wanted to stay.[38] Over the summer, Sue attends the convention in Guest of Honor[24] and takes the guild to Mike’s house after he misses a SwordsVale meeting in Behind Closed Doors.[39]

Junior year

In Love Again, Sue intervenes when Paulo pressures the newly returned Lucy to rejoin the lunch table.[40] Her concern for Mike meets with an angry rebuff in High Expectations.[41] She later apologizes to Lucy for overlooking her boundaries when arranging the play.[3]

Sue invites Lucy trick-or-treating in Witch Hunt.[23] As more friends join them, the outing becomes an argument about Mike and Sandy’s relationship. Sue demands an end to the fighting, and she and Lucy move on to collect candy.[42]

After Stacy denies knowing her in Popularity Contest, Sue resolves to become popular without sacrificing her integrity.[43] She tries out for the cheer squad in Daisy’s old uniform,[44] breaks her leg, and reconciles with Stacy during her hospital stay.[45]

Sue judges her play harshly in Participation Trophy.

Hearing David praise Jessica’s production in Participation Trophy revives Sue’s disappointment about her own play.[46] She calls it a failure both as a story and as matchmaking,[47] but Madison and Jessica reassure her about her work.[48] In Tickets Please, a contest for Amaya’s spare movie tickets ends with Sue giving them to Paulo and admitting she needs to get over herself a little.[7]

Major relationships

Amaya

Amaya’s smile says she already knows where Sue’s conversation is going.

Amaya is Sue’s longtime best friend. A silent and proud support, Amaya and Sue share a lot in common: SwordsVale, theater, garage sale hopping,[49] and more. Even when Amaya says nothing, Sue has no trouble understanding her. In Tickets Please, she reads a whole ticket negotiation out of Amaya’s smile, to James’s bafflement; Lucy follows along just fine.[50]

The reading goes both ways, since Amaya knows exactly what Sue needs before Sue does. In Participation Trophy, Amaya deliberately steers a ranting Sue into Jessica’s earshot so she can hear some overdue praise; Sue thanks her, then adds “Now never do that again.”[48] After Sue loses the trivia contest in Tickets Please, Amaya quietly gives her the tickets anyway.[51] The BCI comic Everyday Life shows the devotion from Sue’s side: she visits Amaya at her cinema concession job, fumes at customers who give her a hard time, and reflects on how happy it makes her to see Amaya smile.[52]

Lucy

Sue offers Lucy the there-are-more-guys-out-there speech in Unrequited.

Sue is devoted to Lucy, even taking over carrying Yashy in Search and Rescue[53] and Mischief Night.[54] That hasn’t stopped her feeling left out: in freshman year Sue envies Lucy’s lunch table before learning she’s been welcome the whole time.[10] Sue’s always there for Lucy during the good times, but her time to shine tends to arrive when Lucy is struggling; when Mike shows off a photograph of Sandy, Sue offers to buy Lucy a slushie, reminding Lucy “Mike isn’t your only friend in the world, you know.”[55] Sue’s grandest gesture to Lucy was the play she wrote to mend Lucy and Mike’s friendship.[3] She finds Lucy outside detention, hauls her to the auditions,[56] and gives her the lead despite a raised middle finger.[57] Even a slap for Mike doesn’t shake her faith: “The girl can sing.”[58] The matchmaking does not last, but Lucy praises the play itself and tells Sue she did a good job.[36]

Upon Lucy’s return to Roseville, Sue respects her request not to discuss her time away,[59] and shoos away Paulo when Lucy doesn’t want to sit at the lunch table.[40] Behind all that care, Sue had been weighed down by guilt over her attempt to fix Mike and Lucy’s friendship. In It’s All in the Mind she apologizes for not respecting Lucy’s boundaries and for mistaking the rift for another ordinary squabble. Lucy tells her she couldn’t have known; Sue is the one who hugs her.[3] Lucy does not return the embrace, though she lightens the conversation with a joke about summer school.[60] Veronica has said outright that Sue is in Lucy’s camp more than Mike’s.[61]

They can also operate like a pair of conspirators. Sue invites Lucy trick-or-treating in Witch Hunt, asks carefully after her lost pets, and promises “you’re not alone without them. You’ve got me, okay?” before the pair fall to trading insulting nicknames for Augustus.[62] Sue also calls Lucy by the nickname “Elle.”[63]

Mike

Sue refuses to give up on Mike, even when he makes concern difficult.

Mike and Sue are old friends with schoolwork and SwordsVale in common. That does not make the friendship friction-free. She cries when he falls from a broken bridge in Search and Rescue,[30] and pulls him into a tearful tackle-hug upon discovering he survived his fall.[31] At one point, Sue made up part of the gaggle of fangirls surrounding Mike, vying to be his girl of choice in Prom Preparation,[28] but fond doesn’t mean gentle; when she suspects him of causing the December drama in Study Buddy, she chokes him with his own scarf[37] and observes, “Wow, that’s a quality scarf. Tough fabric.”[64]

Sue’s attempt to mend things between Mike and Lucy did not work as she hoped, but she still puts in the work to be a good friend to Mike, even if it requires being a bit nosy. When Mike slams Paulo’s head into the lunch tray in High Expectations,[65] Sue runs after Mike to find out what’s wrong.[4] Even Sue has her own limits, though. When her guess of “Is it you and Sandy?” sets him off and he jabs a finger into her necklace screaming that it’s none of her business,[41] she walks away, saying “You’re so.. unpleasant now. I’m sorry, but I can’t let you talk to me this way.”[17] The two still share the SwordsVale guild. In 2020, Veronica explained that Mike remained close to Sue through the game: Sue was still sore about the way he lashed out at her, but wouldn’t let it get in the way of playing.[61] Mike eventually apologizes in Track Meet for snapping at her when she was only trying to help.[66]

Paulo

Paulo’s review of Sue’s play is brief, devastating, and entirely on brand.

Sue and Paulo... coexist. Paulo never misses a chance to make fun of Sue. He calls her play lame in Casting Call,[67] insults her cosplay in Guest of Honor,[68] and reassures her she is indeed a “loser” when Stacy snubs her in Popularity Contest.[11] In spite of this, Sue doesn’t shy away from biting back; she has particularly scathing things to say about Paulo in Behind Closed Doors. She doesn’t reserve these things for when Paulo is away, either: “Oh, I’m ALWAYS glad to tell him he’s a moron to his FACE. He knows how I feel.”[69]

While most of their quibbling is surface-level insults, Critical Hit digs into some sore spots. Sue criticizes Paulo’s dismissal of the art museum, extending it to his attitude toward courting Lucy: “You’re so scatterbrained, nothing could hold your attention for long. ... Not even Lucy.”[70] Sue apologizes for the Lucy remark and admits she’s struggling with the art too.[8] Paulo still shoots back that at least he doesn’t have to go around “pretending like [he] knew already.”[6] Critical Eye, a bonus chapter from Volume Four, follows up with an olive branch. She introduces Paulo to Roy Lichtenstein, then asks about the television show Danger Throat.[71] She torpedoes the whole moment by calling it “incredibly juvenile.”[72]

When James asks in Participation Trophy whether the two of them have crushes on each other,[73] Paulo laughs himself to tears and Sue screams.[74]

In Tickets Please, the rivalry bends somewhere new. Sue claims Amaya’s movie tickets mostly to keep them away from Paulo. Lucy proposes a contest,[75] and David suggests trivia.[76] Paulo wins; Sue stays seated as he puts a hand on her shoulder and delivers a mock-formal apology that briefly softens her.[77][78] When Amaya slips her the tickets anyway, Sue hands them over to Paulo: “Take it, Paulo. You won it fair and square. I only wanted it to spite you.”[79]

The BCI comic Ice Breaker plays the same romantic tease more sincerely, with a middle-school Sue coaching Paulo on how to talk to girls.[80] He comes back to talk about movies with her instead, leaving both of them blushing.[81]

Abbey

Sue and Abbey find common ground in Moments Apart.

Sue and Abbey passively got along until their differing school politics came to light in Feline Filibuster. While debating Abbey for the role of school council secretary, Sue is appalled to learn Abbey’s method of handling bullying would be expulsion without a warning,[82] claiming his view for the school would be “a fascist Roseville dictatorship.”[83] Abbey becomes overwhelmed and withdraws from the race.[84] Sue loses to Daisy,[2] who then hands the position to Abbey.[85]

Despite how strongly the two disagree on things, Sue gets along with Abbey just fine when playing SwordsVale. Even outside of games, Sue actually does care for Abbey’s well-being, and she’s one of the few people willing to say hard things to his face. At Daisy’s birthday picnic in Moments Apart she tells him he’s “a good guy” who came through a lot as a really caring person,[86] then stops his spiral over Daisy and Paulo cold: “But it’s not your life to live now, is it?”[87] And when he protests that it was when they dated, she adds it wasn’t then, either.[88] She also checked on him when his drunk girlfriend confessed to Mike in Happy Hour.[89] By Tickets Please he’s calling her “Susan” and offering to see the movie together.[90]

Minor relationships

McCain

Sue asks Alec for advice, and accidentally makes the moment personal.

Sue and McCain shared a close bond, with McCain often acting as a voice of reason and support for Sue, whether questioning her Neglected Club[91] or consoling her after her election loss.[2] In Out of the Frame, they share a moment of romantic(?) silence.[92]

In fact, Sue and McCain did date for some period of time! Veronica later revealed the two had been quietly dating in the background all along. She originally kept McCain in the comic planning to reveal it one day, but eventually decided that wasn’t worth it and wrote him out rather than keep feeding reader demand for him.[93][94] The BCI comic Everyday Life has Sue mention splitting with an unnamed boyfriend over the summer, “all pretty amicable. I don’t think anyone really noticed.”[95] As for McCain himself, Veronica says he’s still at school, acing his classes and being a funky lil guy.[96]

Stacy

Cosplay is easier when Stacy can be nerdy in private.

Sue and Stacy are fair-weather friends, their best weather being when organizing for and playing SwordsVale, where Stacy can be nerdy in private. A storm brews whenever Stacy’s secret passions threaten her social standing, though; in Popularity Contest, Stacy snubs Sue when she calls out to her and pretends not to know her when Sue confronts her directly.[97][98] Sue kicks Stacy from their guild and questions the value of Stacy’s social status.[99] It takes Sue breaking a leg for Stacy to consider her point of view; at the hospital, Stacy tells her plainly that she’s not a loser and apologizes, then offers a board game as a peace offering.[45] Outside this incident, the two get along fairly well, cosplaying together in Guest of Honor.[24]

Jessica

Jessica thinks Sue looks killer, and means it.

Both active members in the drama club, Jessica and Sue are friends who both enjoy the written word. They bicker with each other when it comes to casting choices,[100] but otherwise get along just fine; in Curtain Rising, one of Volume Four’s print-only chapters, Sue thanks her for “kicking my ass every step of the way.”[35] When Sue tries out for the cheer squad in Popularity Contest, Jessica tells her, “Whoa, Sue, you look KILLER,”[44] and is nothing but supportive about Sue’s new path. Jessica also gives Sue the reassurance she needs, telling her in Participation Trophy, “I was your producer last year and I thought you did a great job in very difficult circumstances. You’re good at what you do, Sue.”[48]

Sandy

Sue recognizes a familiar face from Dragonfighter magazine in Model Girlfriend.

Sue knew Sandy before she moved away. When Mike’s photo of his girlfriend makes the rounds in Unrequited, Sue thinks she has seen her somewhere else, too.[55] On seeing her again in Model Girlfriend, she remembers where: Sandy appeared in Dragonfighter magazine. Sue wishes she had brought her copies for an autograph.[101][102]

  • Sue’s full name is Susan, though almost nobody uses it: her mother does,[29] as do Lily,[30] Paulo when he’s mocking her,[13] and Abbey when he’s being courteous.[90]
  • In turn, Sue is the only character who calls McCain by his first name, Alec. Veronica’s commentary on Out of the Frame notes she “remains the only person who refers to him by his first name. Very romantic..”[92]
  • Her Witch Hunt costume is Carmen Sandiego; Veronica has explained she landed on it by asking herself what cool nerd costume Sue would wear.[103]
  • Her holly necklace was sold as real merchandise in 2017: a $17 “Sue necklace” with a red berry-shaped charm and green leaves.[104]
