Sandy is Mike’s long-distance girlfriend, a white cat from a wealthy family who moved away from Roseville after third grade and grew up into a working teenage model with a chauffeur, a full passport and very little free time. Bubbly, touchy-feely and endlessly chatty about her career, she is also the girl who taught Mike to stand up for himself and then kept her feelings for her hairdresser from him. In Roseville she exists mostly as a wallpaper photo and a ringtone. She has been Mike’s girlfriend for years, with precious little of that time spent in the same room.

Personality

Sandy blows in from an airport, hugs Mike hard enough to squish him, talks a mile a minute about Paris and buyers and her hairdresser, and is on a plane again that night. She is quick with compliments and cheek-pinches and pet names, and still calling her boyfriend by the name she mangled in third grade. She is also a professional, with a schedule run by her mother, a four o’clock alarm and a phone that does most of her living for her. The two Sandys don’t always agree. She can be warm and generous one minute and rather cutting the next, especially about anything she considers a waste of time, and she has a knack for steering a conversation round to herself and then apologising for it.

Third-grade Sandy leans over Mike’s desk and asks whether his doodle is of her in Unfulfilled Fantasy.

Sandy switches personas the way other people switch shoes. In To the Top she walks the agency hallway muttering the three virtues her mother drilled into her at drop-off, and the moment the receptionist looks up she snaps into a sparkling, confident version of herself that lands her the job.[1][2] Veronica’s commentary says the chapter was written to show what drives the present-day Sandy and how close she is to Mike, rather than to reveal anything in particular.[3] That habit of performing is a big part of why she clings to him. He is the one person she never has to plan how to act around, she tells him in Link Play.[4] She makes much the same appeal when asking him to take her back, a conversation replayed in Line in the Sand.[5]

Sandy worries that she hasn’t earned much of anything. As a third-grader with a cook-packed lunch and a D-minus, she told Mike she didn’t think she’d done much by herself,[6] and years later she is still getting poor marks and telling him she was never like him.[2][7] She finds him intimidating, in a good way, she adds.[8] Modeling is where she finally gets to feel good at something. Walking through the park in Model Girlfriend, she describes stepping through the curtain as the music cue fades in and thinking, simply, “I’ve got it.” People rely on her now.[7][9] The job takes its cut, though. In To the Top she stops outside a bakery beside a poster of a thin model, hesitates, and buys the pastry anyway, which Veronica’s commentary cheers on as a snub to eating properly.[10]

Sandy misses the days before she moved away, and she says so. The quiet middle of To the Top has her alone in a dark bedroom, hugging a photo of the two of them from third grade. Down the phone she tells Mike how much she misses the days before she moved to Rickter, when they went places and did stuff together all the time.[11] She punches her stuck locker on the way out of school,[12] but ends the chapter with a tentative smile, offering Mike bonus photos from her modeling jobs and hoping they will make him happy.[3] Funnily enough, she has two cures for the loneliness running at once. Modeling, she says in Model Girlfriend, is what fixed it,[7] and Mike, she says in Link Play, is why she isn’t lonely.[4]

Sandy’s stories keep rolling while Mike listens fondly.

Sandy can talk, and given half a chance she will. Once Mike gets her talking during their Model Girlfriend outing, she fills the shopping trip and walk in the park with Paris, Prague, buyers, someone called Maisie and her hairdresser Francis. She catches herself long enough to ask whether she’s talking too much; Mike encourages her to carry on.[13][14] Line in the Sand opens on a run of phone calls covering a group project, someone called Betty and a reminder that she is not on vacation, while Mike listens hollow-eyed at the other end.[15][16] She knows she does it. In Tickets Please, when Mike misses his moment to reassure her, she prompts him with a stage manager’s “That’s your cue.”[17] She eventually winds down the vent about her mother by apologising that it isn’t very fun to talk about.[18] The self-awareness has limits, mind. She complains to him that so many people at her school are so spoiled,[19] which is quite a thing to hear from a girl with a cook and a chauffeur.[6][20]

Her advice comes with a disciplinary tap.

Sandy flares up and calms down almost as quickly. When Mike races her up a hill in Model Girlfriend, he ignores her protest that she is in the wrong shoes.[21] She explodes at him to grow up and follows it with a chilly “Yeah, if I was eight.” Within a page she is telling him that his silly boyishness is what makes him so cute.[22][23] Losing also brings out her impatience. She gives up on the light-gun game after losing,[24] and she calls his old console something she’d never have time to waste on. When she sees that she has hurt him, she asks to watch him play it.[25][26] She has a bossy sort of goodness too. She taps Mike on the nose and tells him off like a puppy when he says Lucy should die, and she insists there is nothing wrong with telling someone they upset you.[27] That comes back on her in Eternal Flame, when Mike reminds her that she is the one who taught him to stand up for himself.[28]

During the Francis affair, Sandy lies mostly by leaving things out, and then feels dreadful about it. She signed off on Halloween with a declaration of love while, by her own later account, Francis had told her how he felt a few months earlier.[29][30] She confesses to feeling guilty well before she gets round to the facts. On that same Halloween call she tells Mike she hasn’t been good to him at all,[31] and when everything comes out she blurts “I’m not a good person, okay?!” after he confronts her about neglecting him, but before she admits there is someone else.[32] Mike, she keeps saying, is simply “too nice”.[33][34] Afterwards, she tells him she knows she was wrong and understands that he is still upset, but adds a caveat to her invitation to talk things through: she would rather not be yelled at again.[35] Veronica’s commentary notes that Sandy has a habit of naively and innocently letting information slip, while Oliver, on the page before, dryly calls her a thoughtful girl.[36][37]

Appearance

Sandy is a white cat with long, wavy black hair. She has dark eyes with curly lashes.[38] She is tall, taller than Mike when they meet again backstage in Just Beautiful,[39] and Daisy sums her up afterwards as tall and skinny.[40] Her fluffy white tail gets a moment of its own in To the Top, curling luxuriously while she does her makeup,[41] and she wears lipstick, pink in December.[42]

In the third grade, she often wore a simple necklace and kept her hair in a ponytail tied with a blue ribbon.[38] The ribbon remains a recurring accessory. She ties a blue bow into her hair before the agency in To the Top,[41] and in Just Beautiful she wears a large one to match the blue scarf she gives Mike, telling him they should keep on matching up.[43] The contact photo on his phone in Eternal Flame still has the ribbon in.[44] Her mother is less fond of it and wants to know what she has done to her hair this time.[45]

In modern appearances, she is fully clothed, with the varied wardrobe you would expect from a working model. The wardrobe runs from a blazer-and-tie school uniform and volleyball kit[2] to a purple runway gown with a long train.[46] For her Roseville visit in Model Girlfriend she turns up in a long light-blue cardigan over a white button-down with a black ribbon bow, a dark-blue pleated skirt and black platform flats. The flats are no good at all for arcade dance games or hill races.[47][21] She also walks out of the fashion show in Mike’s orange-and-yellow scarf, having taken it from his arm herself.[48] Asked about a reader’s favourite Sandy outfit in Model Girlfriend, Veronica said its short-front, long-tail dress was inspired by a real black-and-white dress of her own. She also noted its resemblance to dresses in Cardcaptor Sakura, though that had not been her intention when designing it.[49]

Significant events

Third grade

Mike’s answer is more honest than he intended.

Sandy’s first appearance is in a third-grade flashback in Unfulfilled Fantasy, when she notices Mike’s doodle of her.[38] They become friends over lunches under a tree: Sandy shares her cook’s food in exchange for tutoring. Her marks improve to a B-minus, and a summer of cloud-watching and birthday cake turns the friendship into a pair of matching crushes.[50][51] Her father’s promotion ends their time together. Sandy tearfully tells Mike the family has to move, promising to write every day.[52]

Middle school and freshman year

Toward the end of middle school, Sandy writes that she has little time for letters, and Mike considers letting their uncertain relationship go.[53][54] On the last weekend before high school, he sees her in a TV report from Maraschino and goes looking for her in Hot Pursuit.[55] While he is away, she visits Mike’s house on her way to the airport and leaves a bonsai tree with two tiny figures resembling them.[56][57]

A small tree brings their much older promise back into focus.

Once high school begins, Mike finds Sandy’s number on an older letter and calls her in A New Leaf. When he asks whether he is her boyfriend, she replies, “I LOVE you, Maishul.. What else would you be?” They begin keeping in closer touch by phone.[58] Distance still limits their plans: in Invitation, Sandy cannot spend the summer with him because she will be in Europe for business.[59]

Sophomore year

By Class of 2008, Sandy’s roses leave Mike floating.

Sandy’s modeling photo circulates around Mike’s lunch table in Unrequited.[60] To the Top follows two days of her own, balancing a modeling job, school, volleyball, shopping and calls with Mike.[2][3] In December, Mike recalls several earlier calls about Lucy hurting him and uses Sandy’s concern to justify ending that friendship.[42][61] Sandy and Mike finally reunite after her fashion show in Just Beautiful, their first meeting since third grade. She gives him a blue scarf and leaves with a kiss and his old orange one.[48] Later, days without replies strain the relationship in Boy Toy.[62] A talk brings renewed hope, and by Class of 2008 Sandy has sent him roses.[63]

Junior year

Dial Tone finds Mike having a nightmare about Sandy wanting him gone.[64] In Model Girlfriend, she gives him a night’s warning before visiting Roseville High School.[65] Their outing takes them to Garden Square mall, the arcade and the park before dinner with Mike’s family.[66] There are arguments as well as affection, and a loving text follows her tearful departure.[67] Weeks of silence follow later.[68] On Halloween in Witch Hunt, Sandy calls with news of a Fashion Week job and an apology for how she has treated him, without explaining what is wrong.[31]

In Eternal Flame, Sandy admits she has fallen for her hairdresser Francis and breaks up with Mike. She soon calls back asking for another chance, and he takes her back.[36][69] She begins texting daily and planning visits, but Mike admits in Double Down that he is still unhappy.[70] Sandy proposes a Valentine’s Day visit in Link Play,[71] while her growing modeling career earns news coverage in New Year’s Resolution.[72] By Line in the Sand, she has reduced her travel to make more time for Mike.[19] Tickets Please finds her venting about her mother’s rules after a trip to Toronto, while Mike says very little back.[18]

Major relationships

Mike

Sandy forgives the boy she likes, with conditions attached.

Sandy holds onto Mike like a piece of her childhood kept safe in a jar, even as their lives grow further apart. On her end he is someone her mother never told her to be nice to, someone she can be herself with.[4] An official Tumblr reply agrees with that nostalgic reading: Mike is a reminder of happier times before responsibility landed on her.[73] On his end she is the kinder girl he measures Lucy against,[74] and he hides his hobbies from her so she won’t think he is a loser.[25] One compliment keeps coming back: he is too nice.[75][34]

In the same room, Sandy is all over him and slightly out of step with him. Backstage in Just Beautiful she pinches his cheeks, reads his anxious texts aloud and hands him a light-blue scarf to match her bow.[76][43] After her mother has called time she runs back to kiss him and steal his orange one, on the grounds that “You look better in blue.”[48] The Model Girlfriend visit is where the gap between them shows. Sandy loses the racing game until Mike quietly lets her win,[77] then gives up on the light-gun game after losing there too, deciding that sort of thing isn’t for her.[78] After the blow-up on the hill she kisses him in his room and ends up weeping onto him about how nice he is.[75]

The breakup and the make-up take a single evening for Mike, and he has been paying for the speed of it ever since. At four in the morning where she is staying abroad, Sandy admits in Eternal Flame that she likes someone else and asks why they should fix something so broken, then hangs up.[30][36] Her return call lights up his cracked phone later that evening.[44] The members-only interquel On Call fills in that conversation: Sandy says she has blocked Francis and will not work with him again.[79] The main comic replays her plea for one more try in Line in the Sand.[5] Mike says yes, abandoning the reconciliation and kiss he had just shared with Lucy.[80][69] By Double Down he is telling Daisy that she texts daily and plans visits and he is just not happy,[70] and later finds himself replaying her old assurance that he is her “rock”.[81] Veronica has suggested that Mike could grow without breaking up with Sandy, by letting Lucy go and focusing on his girlfriend.[82]

Sandy’s mom

Sandy’s mother treats a hairstyle as another item requiring professional oversight.

Sandy’s mother runs her life like a talent agency. In To the Top, her mother checks she knows the day’s schedule and drills professionalism, loyalty and charisma into her outside the agency.[41][83] The same woman cuts the backstage reunion in Just Beautiful short with a curt summons and a remark about what Sandy has done to her hair.[45] Even during her Model Girlfriend outing, Sandy thinks of asking her mother about getting a dance game for home.[84] The official Tumblr says Sandy has no long-term plans of her own, trusts her mother to look out for her and is basically fine being told what to do. That is handy, since her mother wants her in school and Sandy would rather model.[85]

After Francis, Sandy’s mother keeps her on a shorter leash. Her mother hated Francis a lot, she reports in Track Meet, and approves of Mike because he isn’t a distraction, which Sandy passes on as a compliment.[86] By Tickets Please there are rules about calling Geoffrey the chauffeur immediately and not talking to anyone, and Sandy is complaining that nobody trusts her anymore.[87][17] She is happier with her mother’s advice about work, crediting her in Line in the Sand with the routine that keeps her busy.[19]

Lucy

Sandy keeps inviting her, even when Lucy has already decided to refuse.

Sandy kept inviting Lucy along in third grade and mostly got turned down. In Unfulfilled Fantasy Sandy invites a sulking Lucy along for ice cream, and Lucy accepts.[50] Mike’s narration in Left Behind remembers that Sandy was always willing to invite the weird girl to play, whether or not the weird girl came.[88] After Sandy moves away, Lucy tells Mike that she will never be like her.[53] The two barely count as acquaintances in the present day, and yet Sandy hangs over everything Lucy does with Mike. A dream version of her drowns Lucy in a nightmare in Wonderland, politely asking her not to be sinful,[89] and Lucy later dismisses her as his dreamworld girlfriend.[90]

When Sandy does weigh in on Lucy, her dislike does not stop her from urging Mike to talk things out. December shows her concern growing across three earlier phone calls: first over a kick to Mike’s shin, then an attempted slap, and finally a nosebleed. She cries that a real friend would never hurt him during the second call,[91] and ends the third flatly: “I don’t like her. At all.”[61] Backstage in Just Beautiful, she reads the text Lucy sent from Mike’s phone conceding defeat and urges him to go and talk it out, because she knows he is a good person.[92][27] Veronica has agreed with a reader’s comparison of Sandy’s part in December to Augustus’s in Line in the Sand, as well-meaning third parties on either side of the same fight.[93] Lucy has also reassured Mike that Sandy cares about him,[94] but she is furious with Sandy on his behalf after the breakup in Eternal Flame. When Mike takes Sandy back, Lucy wants nothing to do with his girlfriend problems.[95][96]

Francis

Sandy introduces Francis to Mike through cheerful stories about her work, long before admitting that she has fallen for him. He is the apprentice hairdresser who travels with Sandy, and she praises his work to Mike’s face during the Model Girlfriend visit.[13][14] In Eternal Flame she finally admits she likes someone else and names Francis, reminding Mike that he is “The guy who does my hair”. He had told her how he felt a few months earlier, and she says she really loves him.[30] Veronica has endorsed the suggestion that Francis was in his twenties, even if Sandy considered him around her age.[97]

By the time she asks Mike to take her back, Sandy says she is done with Francis, but he keeps turning up in her phone calls. Mike reports her promise never to see him again.[98] In Track Meet she says it wasn’t very professional anyway,[86] dismisses it as his loss, and acknowledges that they both should have known better.[99] Her explanation during the reconciliation that he confused her still haunts Mike in Tickets Please.[81] She admits in the same chapter that she is never going to live him down.[87] Mike hasn’t managed to either. In Link Play, after their call about a Valentine’s visit, he lies in bed picturing Sandy and Francis together.[100]

Minor relationships

Daisy

Daisy finally gets remembered, though only after mentioning the tutoring.

Daisy has carried a childhood best-friendship around for years that Sandy barely recalls. Daisy remembers sleepovers and best-friendship, but when the two meet again in Model Girlfriend Sandy cannot place her until Daisy mentions the tutoring, and then greets her warmly before an awkward “You’ve really.. Grown!”[101] Daisy ends up sobbing that she never mattered to her.[40] Earlier, her resentment at Mike choosing other girls had led her to insist Sandy didn’t deserve him,[102] and she works out in Track Meet that her childhood attachment to Sandy included a crush.[103] Even after the cheating comes out, she is the one reminding Paulo that nobody knows why Sandy did it.[104]

Paulo

Paulo wants to verify Sandy’s existence the hands-on way in Model Girlfriend.

Paulo has strong opinions about Sandy for someone who barely knows her. He drools over her photo in Unrequited,[60] asks to touch her to make sure she is real in Model Girlfriend,[105] and pronounces her body wasted on Mike.[40] By Witch Hunt he is leaving her a voicemail from Mike’s phone telling her to text her boyfriend.[106] Sandy’s return call opens with her asking whether that was the dog, followed by a laugh at the idea of flipping burgers for a living.[107][31] After learning about the cheating, he sums her up to Daisy on their walk from school as Mike’s “dumbass girlfriend”, whom he hates very much.[104]
