Augustus is a mixed-breed cat who started two school years ahead of Lucy and her friends at Roseville High School, though he has taken the scenic route through his senior year. He first turned up as the smooth talker that Alejandro’s gang pointed at Daisy and her friends, and he did real damage before his connection to the gang was revealed. These days he sleeps in Lucy’s family’s guest room, drills Jordan for the SATs, and runs interference between Lucy and Mike. He is also the boy who found Lucy in the snow and dialed 911, though Lucy’s family only learned what he had done when she came back to town.

Personality

Augustus insults you in a flat voice, and a while later you notice he has quietly done something decent for you. He laughs at strange moments (including right after being punched), treats gratitude as a hostile act, and spends his own birthday hunched over SAT prep. Around the lunch-table melodrama of Lucy’s friends he plays the bored older kid who has seen it all, and he has, having watched them for somebody else. The same tongue now mostly gets pointed at whoever upsets Lucy, and at Lucy herself whenever she pretends to be fine.

Augustus sizes people up quickly and remembers exactly where it hurts. He knocked Tess off balance at a lunch table with a single question about honesty, knowing full well what she and Roger had done the previous year.[1] He boasts about researching Abbey’s father, and uses what he knows to reduce Abbey to tears after being punched.[2] When Lucy corners him, a reliable opening move is a jab about her fixation on a certain green-eyed boy.[3][4] Since moving in with her, he points the same talent outward. The film parable he delivers to Mike and his track friends in Line in the Sand initially sounds like ordinary movie talk to James and David, but Mike knows precisely where it is aimed.[5][6]

His preferred consolation remains calling Lucy a brat.

When somebody he cares about is falling apart, his instinct is to call them names. Lucy admits in December that she is about ready to give up on everything, and he answers with a checklist (parents, a bed, a safe neighborhood) followed by “You’re absolutely worthless.”[7] Then he drops the insults and admits he has made peace with loving Daisy from a distance.[8] He consoles a crushed Lucy in On the Sidelines by informing her she is a brat,[9] and when she wakes up crying in his old bedroom, he tells her to knock it off.[10] Getting hit produces much the same reflex. He laughs after Abbey’s right hook,[11] and he is still laughing from the dirt after Mike throws him down.[12]

He likes to insist that other people’s decisions are not his problem. When Lucy follows him into his old neighborhood, he tells her he warned her the first time.[13] He mocks her fear of the catcallers, then suggests she wait outside while he buys food, which she emphatically declines.[14] On the rooftop in Ten Seconds to Midnight, though, he only backs off after she repeatedly insists she is not going to jump. When she snaps that everybody keeps deciding what is best for her, he lets go with “Okay. Do what you want. I’ll wait downstairs until you’re done.”[15] Then he actually goes downstairs and waits.[16]

He has no idea what to do when somebody is nice to him. Offered a guest room by Lucy’s parents, he bursts into tears and insists it must be a prank.[17] Left alone in the living room, he starts to relax in the unfamiliar quiet.[18] He had hoped living there might mean a birthday party; Lucy points out that the cupcake she has brought him is it,[19] and when Jordan begs him for tutoring, he initially thinks he is the one expected to pay.[20] Three thick college envelopes arriving at once leave him flat on his bed asking for a minute.[21] The habit goes back a long way, too. As a small boy, a squalid apartment full of criminals struck him as wonderful simply because it was somewhere to be.[22] Schoolwork gives him something more dependable to work with. Lucy points out that he outscores most of his year,[23] and his plan for an afternoon at the public library includes cramming and avoiding everybody’s drama.[24]

For all his early pursuit of Daisy, he is emphatic that Lucy is not a romantic prospect. He tells Lucy she is not his type on the bleachers,[25] and repeats it to her own father.[26] When she kisses him without warning while distressed, the thing that comes out of him is “A.. Aren’t you supposed to ASK? Isn’t that what you kept saying about me and Daisy?”[27] The boy who once pinned Daisy against a tree now insists on being asked, and explicitly throws Lucy’s criticism of him back at her. Veronica has said that his history with love makes her think of him as pretty aromantic in a lot of ways.[28] In her view he would not be thinking much about romance even if Melanie had never pushed him into a relationship.[29]

Appearance

Augustus is a mixed-breed cat with mostly white fur and dark points on his arms and legs, which read a bit like long gloves and boots. Lucy has called him Siamese, but Veronica says he is not.[30] He has messy white hair with long, centre-parted bangs and a stud in his left eyebrow. Under the hair sits a scar, which Daisy glimpses when she slaps him in Love My Way; he had explained it away to her as an old fight.[31] The piercing is older than his time at Roseville High. Melanie did it herself with a needle on a bathroom floor, back when he was still a kid running errands for the gang.[32]

His hair has a small history of its own. The bangs were asymmetrical from his debut,[33] still choppy and uneven in the flashbacks of Trapped,[34] and evened out by Total Recall.[35] Lucy had told him before she left town that the old cut made him look like an idiot, and he evidently took the note.[4]

As a child he wore a dark long-sleeved shirt and pants.[36] By his teens he had settled on a short dark cloak over a black tank top, an outfit Melanie mocked on sight,[37] and one Veronica herself has described as a coat-cloak-poncho sort of thing.[38] When he later found Lucy injured after her suicide attempt, he offered to use what he called his jacket while talking to the emergency dispatcher.[39] The jacket barely made it through the door at Lucy’s house before her mother declared it filthy and ordered it into the wash.[17] He then took to Jordan’s hand-me-downs, particularly a red hoodie with a flaming basketball on it.[40][41] Rachel still hails him as the emo kid.[42] Daisy tells him in College Material that without the air of mystery he is just a guy in a smelly coat, and his whole defense is a mumbled “I wash my clothes now..”[43] By First-Degree Burn he has a dark hoodie of his own, a Christmas gift from Lucy’s family.[44] Veronica has said she came to really like the simplified version of his old design that she drew for Another Chance.[38]

Significant events

Junior year

Augustus makes his debut in Carry On, sidling up to a nervous Daisy at swim class, calling her beautiful and claiming a little brother who played soccer near her cheer squad.[33] He ends the chapter watching Lucy from behind a tree at the river.[45] Over Follow Me and Bonding he works on Daisy in earnest, needling Tess and trying to draw Daisy away from her friends. Daisy resists both his account of Tess and his attempt to kiss her.[46]

Augustus’s promises of love become something Daisy begs him to stop.

In Rising Temperature he steers a lonely Daisy toward her carnival scheme with Mike.[47] After Mike rejects her in Love My Way, Augustus corners her against a tree and assaults her. Abbey intervenes, and Daisy sends Augustus away.[48][31] Moving On reveals him handing the group’s class schedules to Toby and Alejandro: he has been their informant the whole time.[49]

Senior year

He is quieter the following year, at least at first. He startles Tess in A Distance Apart, but tells her she is not the one he is looking for.[50] In Pillow Talk he finds Lucy tearing up an invitation on the bleachers, beginning a prickly companionship.[51] She eventually follows him home and hears about his childhood and the gang. Although shown in Escape Route and Trapped, that visit falls before December, when he talks to her about Mike and his own feelings for Daisy.[52][8]

New Year’s Eve in Ten Seconds to Midnight begins with Augustus tidying a bottle out of his parents’ trashed living room while his father grumbles at him, and wishing the man a dry happy new year in return.[53] He later finds Lucy on the roof of the old furniture place. She insists she is not going to jump, and he eventually agrees to wait downstairs.[54][15] Her suicide attempt happens later, after the school play. Augustus finds her injured and calls an ambulance, a rescue revealed in a flashback in Love Again.[55][39]

With Lucy away, his old circumstances persist. Daisy catches him shoplifting in Safe Boundaries, and in Total Recall he approaches her outside the gym storage room to apologize.[56][57] The present-day scenes of Trapped show Alejandro summoning and assaulting him again.[58]

Repeated senior year

Daisy’s question about graduation catches Augustus at a sore spot.

Table for One finds Augustus still at Roseville High. Toby’s demands have cost him enough school days to prevent his graduation, and Lucy returns in Love Again determined not to let him waste another year.[59][23] She brings him home and introduces him as the boy who saved her life. Her father offers him the guest room until graduation; Lucy insists he attend class and leave Daisy alone.[60][61]

A bedroom of his own leaves Augustus temporarily without words.

Living with Lucy’s family gives him room to study, tutor Jordan, and stop answering the gang’s calls.[62][63] Lucy marks his eighteenth birthday with a cupcake in Escape Route.[19] He sits the SAT at East Rutledge High School in College Material[64] and starts spending time with Jordan’s friends in Double Down.[65]

His efforts to protect Lucy increasingly put him at odds with Mike. A private conversation in Burnt Bridges wins a promise to leave her alone,[66] but their dispute over recess space escalates through First-Degree Burn into a public confrontation in Line in the Sand. Mike throws him to the ground; afterward, David helps separate the two lunch groups, and Augustus joins the seniors’ table.[12][67]

In Made Fresh, three thick college envelopes arrive. Augustus opens the one from his top school and learns he has been accepted with a partial scholarship.[21] Alone with the letter afterward, he can barely believe that he has done it. His phone starts buzzing, and he lets it ring with a smile.[68][69]

Major relationships

Lucy

Lucy and Augustus make mutual dislike look almost affectionate.

Ask either of them and they will tell you, in perfect unison, “I don’t like you.”[70] That has been the arrangement since their first real conversation on the bleachers in Pillow Talk, where he scolds her for littering and she tells him to get lost, which he greets as a welcome challenge.[51][71] Earlier he had watched her from behind a tree at the river,[45] since the blue-eyed girl was the one Alejandro actually wanted found.[72] Afterward she is the one who keeps seeking him out at recess[73] and poking through his locker.[74] He repays the attention by lying to a bus driver to strand her, and then watches her from the window with something like worry.[75][76] He also tells her, as rudely as he can manage, how badly Mike treats her.[77]

Long before she could offer him a room, Lucy followed him on the bus to see where he lived. He tried to keep her out of the gang’s sight, let her stay overnight, and eventually told her the story of his childhood.[78][34] She answered a crack about Mike with a slap, then ordered him not to screw up his final year.[4] The visit took place that November, before December.[52]

Augustus reaches for help while Lucy can only watch and bleed.

On New Year’s Eve he spotted her on the rooftop ledge, tore up the stairs and grabbed her hand. She insisted she was not going to jump and demanded a say in what was best for her; he stepped back, but waited below.[54][15] When he found her bleeding in the snow after her later attempt, he told her she would be doing him a favor by staying alive. He reached for his phone as she begged him not to call “him” and told him he did not owe her anything.[79][80] He asked for an ambulance and offered his jacket to help with the bleeding.[39] After she had left town, he stood alone on the rooftop and quietly wished her well.[81]

Lucy came back in Love Again determined to repay the debt with interest. She announced that this year she would be the one fighting for him, and marched him home to a family who learned that night what he had done.[23][60] She marks his birthday with a cupcake,[19] while he keeps her return out of the gang’s hearing.[82] She also recruits him as her Halloween deterrent in Witch Hunt.[83] When she tried to turn that closeness into sex in the flashback in Burnt Bridges, she kissed him without asking. He refused her, and when she sobbed that she wanted to die he held her and told her he loved her and meant it, explaining “Because I don’t love you like that.”[84][85] On the porch steps at New Year’s they shook hands on his one request, that she stay alive.[86]

Living under one roof has given the two of them plenty to bicker about. He walks her home whether she likes it or not, and when he brings up her fragility in front of Jordan she takes it as a broken promise.[87] Pressed about her nightmares, she tells him she misses when he was a creep.[88] She grabs his shoulder to stop his siege on Mike, then clings to his arm once it is over.[89][90] In Made Fresh, she stands outside his bedroom door with melting ice cream, trembling as his old handlers ring his phone.[91] By Tickets Please, he laughs with Rachel and the others while Lucy watches from her own table. Later, with Augustus out for the evening, she goes into his room, stares at the ringing phone, and leaves it unanswered.[92][93]

Daisy

Augustus turns Daisy into a fantasy of who she might become.

Daisy began as an assignment, and Augustus kept trying to treat her as anything but. He approached her at the pool while working for the gang,[33] yet when Toby asked why he hadn’t brought her along, he said he wanted it to be her decision. Privately he apologized to her for failing to keep her out of it.[49] Somewhere in there he fell for her for real. He taped a small photo of her inside his nearly empty locker[74] and pressed a daisy in his book.[9] He told Lucy she was smart, independent and gorgeous, with the potential to be the most incredible girl in the world if she grew out of her neediness.[94] Veronica has been blunt that none of this was healthy love. He does love her, she clarifies, but the reasons don’t hold up as romance, and Daisy mostly felt to him like salvation and a ticket out.[95]

None of that softens what he did. He drew her away from Abbey at the pool,[96] tried to turn her against Tess with the Roger story,[97] and talked her into the carnival scheme by telling her to accept what she had been aching to be.[47] After Mike rejected her, he pinned her against a tree and sold the assault to her as a place with no rejection and no drama.[48] She slapped him and sent him away.[31]

Even Lucy phoning Daisy during her first visit to his house was enough to make him blush.[98] Daisy was still unsure how she felt about him long afterward. In Pillow Talk she admitted to Lucy that she had liked being the only thing on someone’s mind, that he gave her bad vibes, and that maybe he was more than just that.[99][100] When she caught him shoplifting, he wordlessly put the can back and left.[56] When he finally approached her to apologize in Total Recall, he minimized it as only having meant to kiss her, and she told him that was plenty far. She answered his self-loathing with the line that still governs them, “You need help. Even if it can’t be from me.”[101][57] Nowadays the distance is enforced by house rule[61] and by Daisy herself, who would rather he didn’t join her lunch table.[102] They can share a booth at Burger-Tron, though, where he gently tells her she wants Paulo to do well.[103]

Alejandro and Toby

Alejandro has had a hold on him since he was a small, neglected boy, long before Roseville High. He, Toby and Melanie caught the kid shoplifting milk, and Alejandro’s pitch was simple: if the parents don’t care, come hang out at his place instead.[104][105] The kid took him up on it and earned the title of their little mathematician by working out which stores lacked real cameras.[106] Once Toby overheard Melanie’s confession of love, he had leverage that Augustus says could be fired off at any time. Toby knew who Melanie’s other partner was, unlike Alejandro.[107][34] By Moving On he was in an alley handing over the friend group’s schedules, asking what those kids had ever done to deserve it.[49] When Alejandro slams him into a wall and punches him in Trapped, he can only manage a shaky joke about not getting reimbursed for the snacks.[58] He refuses when Lucy suggests the police. As he tells Lucy, the gang has plenty on him, and Alejandro would remember a snitch.[108]

The gang went on costing him after Lucy left town. Toby’s forced absences tripped the school’s absentee policy and wiped out his graduation, and by the time Lucy returned Augustus said Toby wanted him to drop out altogether.[109][23] Augustus shrugged that a GPA means nothing when you don’t show up, and pointed out that Alejandro knows where he lives and is prone to tantrums.[23] Once he was living at Lucy’s, he stopped answering. He went AWOL, let the daily calls roll to voicemail, and told Lucy that what used to make him anxious was starting to feel refreshing.[63][82] He also assured Lucy he had not told the gang she was back from her aunt’s.[82] By Made Fresh, with a scholarship letter in hand, he can watch the phone buzz, laugh, and call the caller an idiot.[69][110]

Melanie

The fountain gives Melanie room to be kind, ambitious, and briefly herself.

Melanie was Alejandro’s girlfriend and a source of kindness for the kid doing their shoplifting. She brought him along to the college fountain, shared her plan to get a scholarship and get out of town, and told him “Yer a good kid, Augustus. Don’t let ’em ruin you.”[111] She mocked his cloak and pierced his eyebrow,[32] and then kissed him and drew him into a secret sexual relationship.[112][113] He was thirteen and she was fifteen.[114] Veronica describes Melanie as having pushed him into that relationship. She also notes that Melanie was an abused teenager herself, without treating her suffering as an excuse for what she did to him.[29] The secret held through three of her school years,[115] long enough for him to dream aloud about the two of them leaving together after he graduated. He turned down her offer of a cigarette, but shared her hope of escape.[116]

After Toby reported that Melanie was seeing someone else, Augustus walked in on Alejandro strangling her, and Melanie clawed his face to drive him back, at which point he fainted.[117][118] When he came to, bloodied, he joined in Alejandro’s insult about her with a grin.[119] He said goodbye to her at the hospital, where she dismissed the idea of telling the police and said her grandmother would take her away. She apologized and expected never to see him again.[120][121]

He remembers her as the only one who got away,[34] and his partial scholarship in Made Fresh recalls their hope of getting away through education.[122][21] Veronica has ruled out a return as a student teacher at Roseville High, calling that idea too soapy.[123] The BCI story All or Nothing retells the arc as an alternate universe with a far bloodier outcome: Melanie kills Alejandro, then declares herself and Augustus free as the police lead her away. None of it happened in the main comic.[124]

Mike

Augustus makes sure Mike remembers the promise he was about to break.

For a long time, their exchanges amounted to little more than Augustus calling Mike green eyes on his way out of a library,[125] and Mike looking disgusted at the sight of him bickering with Lucy in the hallway.[126] Burnt Bridges changed that. Augustus summoned Mike to the bleachers with a note because he wanted to hear his side of the story.[127] He pressed him for why rather than what he thought he ought to say,[128] and told him he had owed Lucy something after that night and had instead undone every bit of good she did for herself.[129] Then he offered a piece of unexpectedly sympathetic advice about Sandy: “People don’t usually end up with their third-grade crushes, you know.”[130] Mike promised to leave Lucy alone, and Augustus agreed to look after her himself.[66] He admitted afterward that he had braced for the version of Mike that comes out when someone criticizes his girlfriend.[131]

As Mike’s track practice brought him into Lucy’s recess space, Augustus appointed himself the promise’s enforcer. He asked nicely first, standing at Mike’s locker in First-Degree Burn and pleading for a little recess space because Lucy hadn’t been in a good way.[132] When Mike began to say he was sure Augustus didn’t care, Augustus confirmed that he didn’t.[133]

When Mike ran the track anyway, Augustus stopped asking. In Line in the Sand he approached Mike, James and David outside and described a film about pushing someone until they are hospitalized,[134] then dropped the parable and accused Mike of saying things that put Lucy in a psych ward.[135] He called Mike possessive and offered to spell it out for James, whom he pointedly called Mike’s boyfriend, at which point Mike grabbed his face and threw him to the ground.[136][137] Augustus treated that as proof Mike did have something to hide.[12] When Mike reached for Lucy, Augustus caught his hand and told him he wasn’t letting him break another promise.[138] Veronica has confirmed that Line in the Sand was deliberately built to mirror December.[139]

Lucy’s family

The household adopted him about as fast as a household can. Lucy’s mom met him with a tearful hug about nearly losing her baby, to which he could only say it was nothing.[140] Before dinner she had ordered his filthy jacket into the laundry, offered Jordie’s pajamas, and promised to have words with his mother.[17] Lucy’s dad had already heard about his circumstances and offered the guest room until graduation, with a no-funny-business rider attached. The chicken lasagna helped tempt him into staying; he assured Lucy’s dad she wasn’t his type.[141][26] Left alone in that living room, he sat marvelling at how quiet it was,[18] and later flopped on his new bed, smiling, before Jordan burst in.[142] Carol has mothered him aggressively ever since, pouring juice and fishing for news about Lucy that he politely refuses to give.[143] She has also taken to calling him Auggie.[144]

Jordan skipped the scary-big-brother talk entirely and went straight to begging for SAT help, on the grounds that Augustus had saved his sister and might as well save him too.[20] The tutoring is merciless,[62] and the friendship stuck anyway. Jordan tells him he really wants them to hang out more, and Augustus points out that they live together.[65] Jordan drags him along to the mall,[145] offers to make space for him at the seniors’ table,[67] and greets his three college envelopes with a plea to save some for him.[146] Sam was the initial holdout. His first words on the subject were to ask who the creep was, and he approved of the no-funny-business rule.[147][26]

Minor relationships

Abbey

The right hook earns Abbey a compliment he emphatically did not want.

This one is pure antagonism, and mostly Augustus’s own doing. When Abbey hauled him off Daisy in Love My Way and punched him, Augustus laughed, complimented the right hook as something his father would be proud of, and kept goading him to hit like Daddy until Abbey collapsed in sobs.[11][2] He reached for the same weapon the following school year in Table for One, suggesting Abbey wouldn’t want to end up in jail like a certain other psycho, and then slumped against a wall as soon as he was alone.[59] Abbey walked away from him without a word on SAT day.[148]

Tess

The past catches up with Tess in A Distance Apart.

For Augustus, Tess was never much more than leverage. He used her history with Roger to try to pry Daisy loose from the group, first with a pointed question about honesty at the lunch table,[1] then with a threat about her little secret at the pool.[96] Finally he told Daisy the whole Roger story, but Daisy insisted that Tess deserved a chance, just as she had given him one.[149][97] He startled her again in A Distance Apart, only to tell her she was of no concern to him and wish her a safe year.[50]

David

David greets the dashing Final Fantasy Cat in the flesh.

David adores him loudly and without any encouragement, telling his friends that he looked more like a Sephiroth or a Melfice.[150] By Witch Hunt he still tackle-greets him as Final Fantasy Cat and asks where his horns are. When Augustus explains that his new job is keeping mean little boys away from insecure little girls, David finds this magical.[151][152] David is also the one who defused the Line in the Sand standoff, first spotting some subtext in it and then steering Augustus over to the seniors’ table so Lucy could sit with her friends.[153][67]

Paulo

High Expectations makes Lucy the only thing standing between Paulo and a regrettable punch.

The contempt between these two runs firmly in both directions, and it has since Augustus first patronized the freshman at a lunch table.[1] Paulo swung at him in High Expectations, with Lucy blocking the punch and Augustus ducking behind her, and shouted to anyone listening that he had molested their friend.[154][155] Augustus rates Paulo the second-worst choice Lucy could make for a walk home,[156] and Paulo thinks he could start by getting a better personality.[157] Paulo did later apologize to Lucy for the cracks, which is about as warm as this one gets.[158] Veronica has said Paulo’s hatred is entirely about Daisy, and that he held off confronting Augustus at Burger-Tron rather than risk his job. On Halloween he wanted to trust Daisy and avoid repeating Abbey’s overprotectiveness; Augustus had given him no new reason to step in.[159]

Senior friend group

Rachel, Matt, Madison and Jessica adopted him on sight in Double Down, hailing the moody new arrival as the emo kid and declaring him a marginalized child fallen through the cracks who needed a bowling trip whether he wanted one or not.[42][65] He asked to bring Lucy along to the mall, which made things a touch awkward given Madison’s grudge against her.[145] Rachel in particular has been openly appreciative since he landed among them, patting the table beside an empty seat and pronouncing him tasty. Augustus concluded he had picked the wrong seat.[67] By Tickets Please, he is laughing with Rachel, Matt and Jordan, and heading over to Jessica’s with Jordan for the evening.[92][144]

  • Augustus went unnamed on-panel for roughly thirty chapters. Toby calls him “Gussie” in Moving On,[49] and his actual name isn’t spoken until Daisy says it in Pillow Talk.[99][38] Alejandro calls him “Gus”,[160] and Carol has since settled on “Auggie”.[144]
  • The Final Fantasy Cat nickname is David’s doing in-comic,[161] and Veronica also uses it in her commentary on his debut chapter, asking “what is your deal, Final Fantasy Cat..”.[45]
  • He claims a little brother at his debut,[33] and Daisy later remembers him saying “Oh, my brother’s sick again…”.[31] Whether the brother is real is unclear.
  • The BCI story Another Chance showed his drunk mother and his childhood shoplifting in 2011, three years before Trapped explored the same background in the main comic. Another Chance itself remains an alternate story.[162][38]
  • An Augustus plush, complete with removable button-clasp cape, was announced for the Volume Seven Kickstarter. He had earlier featured as an acrylic charm in the Volume Five campaign.[163]
