Sue’s mom is the mother of Sue, and the parent who ends up driving the whole gang home from the Cinder Station disaster in Confrontation. The kids in her minivan are hiding the night’s chaos from her, and she only about half believes the two who try to explain it.

Personality

Sue’s mother attempts one last intervention in Confrontation.

Sue’s mom has a decent nose for nonsense and rather limited patience for following it up. Faced with a back seat full of bandaged, evasive thirteen-year-olds, she frowns, asks Sue whether she is really sure her friends are fine, and announces that she will have to have a word with the other mothers.[1] When a very drunk Mike then shushes her, she decides the argument isn’t worth having and gives the whole thing up with a grumble.[1]

She is, at least, dependable when it counts. A single phone call from Sue is enough to get her driving out to a derelict part of town to collect five kids, which Sue clearly did not take for granted.[2]

Appearance

Sue’s mom appears on-panel in the main comic exactly once, at the wheel of a minivan, so there is not much to say about her wardrobe.

Significant events

Early in Confrontation, Sue phones her from a bar in the Cinder Station area to ask for a ride home. Sue is delighted when her mother agrees to drive out and collect the group.[2] By the time her mother appears later, the night has gone badly and the kids are determined not to tell her what happened.[1] She drives them down the highway while Mike, drunk on liqueur chocolates, hugs a bandaged Lucy in the back seat.[1] He insists the two of them were only practising their tae kwon do, and she tells him there is a time and a place for that sort of thing, getting shushed for her trouble.[1]

Major relationships

Sue

Sue calls her mother for a rescue, but does not tell her what she is rescuing them from. On the phone in Confrontation, Sue is effusive about her mom agreeing to drive out, calling her a lifesaver and the greatest.[2] Her mother calls her “Susan”, which almost nobody else does, and presses her on whether Mike and Lucy are really all right.[1] Sue, with bloodied tissues stuffed up her nose, lies to her face and says they just fight a lot.[1] Oliver’s commentary on the page says as much outright: the kids have no intention of letting a parent know what kind of chaos they just got into.[1]

Minor relationships

That night, the rest of Sue’s friends know her only as the woman at the wheel. Mike is the one passenger who actually speaks to her, and being drunk, he addresses her as “Mrs. Sue”.[1]

Trivia

  • Veronica has said that Sue’s mother is into science. While Daisy’s mom does hands-on lab work, Sue’s mother is more about theory and giving professional informative talks.[3]
  • She has a wordless cameo in the BCI gag comic Family Comix, posing with folded arms in a “Take your children to work day” montage while Sue smiles up at her.[4] Veronica later confirmed on Tumblr that the pair in the panel are indeed Sue and her mother.[5]
