Craig is a shaggy dog at Roseville High School and one of the hangers-on in Roger’s crowd. He appears almost entirely inside the story Jessica tells about her freshman year in Pillow Talk, where a note asking him for a favour ends with him sexually assaulting and threatening her on the school track. Veronica’s commentary sums him up as an idiot teenager rather than any kind of cool mafia man.[1]

Personality

Craig finds a note in his locker and decides on the spot that the girl who wrote it must be into him. He is pushy and sexually aggressive without being anywhere near as smooth as he imagines, and the commentary describes him as thoroughly awkward rather than slick.[1] He also casts himself alongside Roger as somebody Jessica should fear, warning her to be careful around “guys like Roger and me”.[2]

Craig’s loyalty comes with an embarrassingly obvious price tag.

His loyalty to Roger lasts exactly as long as nobody offers him anything for it. He shoves Jessica away as soon as she says she is interested in Roger, and he bristles at the idea that he would “rat him out” to a freshman with a grudge.[3] A page later he is offering to tell her where Roger keeps his pocket knife, provided she lets him touch her.[1] Afterward, by Tess’s account, he felt guilty about letting Jessica kiss him and did not spread any rumours about her himself.[4][5] An official BCB Tumblr response later suggested that he and Roger might have been half-decent without Tess, citing Craig’s choice not to spread the rumours and his warning to Jessica, while still calling him “a piece of shit”.[6]

Appearance

Craig is a brown and white dog with shaggy, floppy ears.[7] In his one speaking appearance he wears a red cap and a blue shirt with light blue stripes, and he carries a purple backpack to his meeting at the track.[7][8]

Significant events

Craig’s only speaking appearance is inside the story Jessica tells at Daisy’s sleepover in Pillow Talk, set during her freshman year. He is laughing in the hallway with Roger and Tess when Jessica tries to confront them and loses her nerve.[7] She slips a note into his locker instead, and he meets her at the oval after school.[8] The meeting ends with him sexually assaulting her and threatening to tell Roger what she was asking about; Jessica kisses him to keep him quiet, and he walks away while she cries.[1][9][2]

Rumours about Jessica go around the school afterward. Tess later tells Jessica that Craig said she had wimped out, called it the weirdest kiss ever, and admitted he felt guilty.[4] She also says Craig did not spread the rumours himself, though he did tell the group that Jessica had been looking to cause trouble for Roger; Tess says she was the one who spread the rumours.[5]

Major relationships

Jessica

Craig’s favour comes with terms Jessica never agreed to.

Jessica approaches Craig because she wants leverage over Roger. He reads her invitation as a come-on and gives her points for creativity, then shoves her away when she says she is interested in Roger.[10][3] Once she explains what she is after, he refuses to inform on Roger and then almost immediately offers the location of Roger’s pocket knife while groping her. Jessica manages only “please.. I don’t..” before he keeps going until she shoves him off.[1][11]

His apology lasts about a panel. He grabs her shoulder and implies that Roger will hear what she was asking about, so she kisses him and begs him to let that be enough.[9] He answers with “I’ll think about it,” tells her to be careful around guys like Roger and him, and walks off.[2] Tess’s rumours about the encounter then turn it into the start of Jessica’s reputation as the “school slut”.[5][12]

Minor relationships

Roger and Tess

Roger and Tess are the company Craig keeps. He laughs along with them in the hallway, and Tess later lumps him in with the guys Roger sticks by, a rung below herself in the pecking order.[7][12] Whatever he says about not snitching, he does report Jessica’s approach to the pair of them afterward.[5]

Quotes

Be careful around guys like Roger and me, alright? Might not be so lucky again. Craig, leaving Jessica on the track in Pillow Talk

Weird way to come onto a guy. But I’ll give ya points for creativity! Craig, misreading Jessica’s note in Pillow Talk

You invite me out here and now you just wanna walk away? After asking me to snitch on Roger? Craig, switching from apology to threat in Pillow Talk

Trivia

  • Craig’s name is never spoken in his own scene. Tess is the one who finally uses it, two pages after he has walked off the track.[4]
  • Before his introduction, he had a silent cameo in Love My Way, sitting at the back of the carnival roller coaster beside Courtney during Mike and Daisy’s date.[13]
  • In the BCI story Sob Story, Lucy claims people only read the school newspaper to make fun of Craig’s anime comics.[14]
