Felix is a member of the track team at Roseville High School and the closest thing the Hornets have to a voice of reason. Dry, blunt, and easily bored, he often hangs back in the team’s group scenes while James makes a spectacle of himself. He is also James’s ex, which lets him warn Mike about James from personal experience.

Personality

Felix remembers that encouragement is no excuse for abandoning basic manners in Second String.

Most of what Felix does in a group scene is hang back, sometimes with his arms crossed, while somebody else makes a fool of themselves. James gushes, Lucas puts on a show about how hungry he is, and Felix walks around with his hands behind his head and lets them get on with it. When he does open his mouth, it is usually to tell someone to knock it off, and he doesn’t bother softening it. The awkward part is that the person who most needs telling is generally his ex, and Felix is perfectly happy to point that out to whoever happens to be listening.

Keeping James in line is more or less Felix’s job on the team, and he does a lot of it with his hands. When James starts gushing at Mike in the mall, Felix flatly tells him to “Keep it together, dude.”[1] When James jokes at practice that the team doesn’t even need Mike any more, Felix smacks him on the back and tells him to pay attention.[2] Veronica has said he is kind of a jerk in a different way, or maybe not a jerk at all once you understand he is just being “helpfully blunt”.[3]

Felix discovers that a joke can be funny right up until it lands in Second String.

Felix can take his bluntness too far, though. A few minutes after scolding James for a mean joke in Second String, he grins and makes one of his own about how exhausting James can be, and Finn wastes no time pointing out the hypocrisy.[4] Felix backpedals at once.[5]

Felix can be hard to impress. He watches Mike slam Paulo’s face into a lunch table and only remarks that it’s a good thing James is home sick.[6] He wanders the mall looking bored, then sheepishly admits he’d been hoping to hit the arcade too and already has quarters on him.[7][8] He has rather less patience for hangers-on, and when Daisy turns up at practice he wants to know what she’s there for. Her pom-poms don’t convince him.[9]

Appearance

Felix is a brown-and-white cat with blue eyes and a white blaze up his forehead.[10] Veronica has said that the track team, James and Lucas aside, were drawn from breeds she looked up for inspiration.[11]

Felix often wears a calm, neutral expression, and Veronica has compared him to Sam with one caveat. Sam is pretty similar, “though Felix doesn’t have resting bitch face syndrome.”[3]

Significant events

Felix was already at Roseville before James transferred. As James later tells Sue in Participation Trophy, Felix, Darwin and Finn saw her play and liked it.[12] A flashback in One-Track Mind also places Felix with the team as Mike slams Paulo into a cafeteria table, before Mike joins them.[6]

Readers first meet Felix in Track Meet, when James lets slip how much the team talks about Mike and Felix joins the others in yelling at him not to say that.[10] At Mike’s first practice he grills Daisy about why she’s on the sidelines.[9]

Felix looks confident while the mall’s arcade competition heats up.

In Link Play, he joins James, Lucas, Finn and Mike on a pre-Christmas trip to the mall, browses with Finn, and ends up in the arcade’s six-seat racer.[13][14] By the end of the chapter he is one of the smiling faces in Mike’s head crowding out Lucy’s glare.[15]

His history with James first surfaces in Date Night, where James admits that Felix is the one teammate who watches his art films, and that he can’t invite him along anyway.[16] In Second String, Felix smacks James for joking that the team no longer needs Mike, then aims a tease at James that lands harder than he meant it to.[2][5] In First-Degree Burn, he and Finn try to draw a spiralling Mike to the team’s lunch table, and Mike goes chasing after James instead.[17][18]

In Line in the Sand, Felix sits quietly at the team table while James challenges Lucy to a race.[19]

Major relationships

James

James clings to Felix’s neck and swears he’ll never get over him in Second String, and Felix would like him to stop being a baby about it.

Felix and James are exes, and Felix is the one who acts like he’s moved on. Veronica confirmed it on Tumblr with a cheerful “They’re exes!”,[20] and the comic reveals their history gradually. In Date Night, James can’t invite Felix to his art films “for obvious reasons”.[16] In First-Degree Burn, asked what makes his take on James so neutral, Felix announces that he is allowed to say Mike is too good for James because “I was too good for him, too!”[17] Veronica had a background for the two of them in mind as early as Date Night, and has said she hopes to explore James’s habit of staying on good terms with exes in the comic proper.[16][21]

Day to day, Felix plays James’s minder. Felix deflates his gushing at the mall and smacks him at practice.[1][2] When his joke about James being exhausting hits a nerve, he pulls back straight away. He rests a hand on James’s shoulder and asks “Too soon?”[4][5] James answers by bursting into tears and clinging to Felix’s neck, wailing that he will never get over him. Felix shoves at his head and tells him not to be a baby.[5] The rest of the team watches with flat expressions, and Veronica’s commentary notes they are used to this, adding of the joke itself that Felix perhaps has some experience with the subject.[4][5] When David pops up between them to offer James an energetic boyfriend, the two of them recoil blushing in unison.[22]

Mike

Felix offers the fairer reading of James in First-Degree Burn.

Mike has a standing offer of friendship from Felix that he never quite gets round to accepting. Felix is among the teammates chattering about Mike before he even joins,[10] and he backs Mike’s arcade plea at the mall and offers up his quarters.[7][8] After James’s careless joke at practice in Second String, he is the only one who follows up with a “You sure?” when Mike insists he’s fine.[23] Veronica’s commentary on the scene has it that Felix has Mike’s back, though not James’s.[2]

In the cafeteria in First-Degree Burn, Felix joins Finn in offering Mike some company. James and David have gone off without him, and Mike is fretting about how easy he is to forget, so Felix tells him “You’re too good for that dork anyway.”[17] He then offers a fairer read: James is easily distracted, and he definitely likes Mike.[18] Mike runs after James anyway, and Felix watches him go with a pitying frown.[18] Veronica has said Felix will always be there for his friends when they need him, if only somebody would give him the chance,[24] and has pointed out, with a great many exclamation marks, that Mike could simply talk to him.[25] Felix is back at the team’s table in Line in the Sand,[19] and even James, now upset with Mike, says Finn and the others still like him.[26]

Finn

Felix, chocolate milk in hand, gives Mike his opinion of James, and Finn wonders how neutral it really is, in First-Degree Burn.

Finn has appointed himself the person who points out when Felix is being a hypocrite, and he gets plenty of practice. He is the one who calls out Felix for making a mean joke minutes after scolding James for the same thing,[4] and the one who needles him about his “neutral perspective” on James in the cafeteria.[17] The two of them shop together at the mall in Link Play[13] and tag-team the job of reassuring Mike.[17][18] Veronica calls Felix a nice “straight man” alongside Finn, with the difference that Finn is “fully a jerk”.[3]

Trivia

  • Veronica has said the track team, Felix included, were pretty new characters created after James; only James existed when he first appeared in the BCI story Everyday Life.[27]
  • The name Felix was spoken in Casting Call twelve years before the character debuted, when Jessica voted for an auditioner called Felix over Mike during tryouts for Sue’s play. The comic does not identify which of the auditioners she means.[28]
