Bittersweet Candy Bowl on Webtoon

Bittersweet Candy Bowl on Webtoon is the official mirror of Bittersweet Candy Bowl on the Webtoon platform. The authors began publishing the comic there on November 23, 2020. Rather than keeping pace with the main site, the mirror starts the story over from the beginning, using the remastered pages produced for Bittersweet Candy Bowl: Omnibus 1. As of late 2025 the mirror is on a long hiatus, though the authors say they plan to continue it one day.

Background

The authors tried Webtoon out with a different comic first. In 2019, Veronica’s journal comic Taeshi Diary began posting to Webtoon and Tapas as an experiment, with the stated goal of finding out “if there’s some magic amount of interest that gets the algorithm to start recommending these journal comics beyond the existing audience on Tumblr”. By August 2020, “BCB on Webtoon” links were already sitting in the site’s HTML, commented out and labelled “maybe one day?”, so a full BCB mirror was in the works months before anyone could read it.

Launch and content

The mirror launched on November 23, 2020, the same day the Omnibus Kickstarter campaign opened. “Starting from today, we’re debuting the remade Volume One pages on Webtoon!” the campaign announced, pitching the mirror as a way to reach new readers while giving existing fans a chance to comment on the redrawn material.

In January 2021, the authors were posting the remastered pages as vertical-scroll Webtoon episodes every Tuesday and Thursday at 1 PM EST. Together with the main-site updates, that meant BCB was updating five times a week, two of them on Webtoon. The Kickstarter plan called for two episodes a week over two full years to reach the end of Volume Three. Once they had established the Webtoon run, the authors planned to work out how to update the main site’s archive as well, “likely trailing the Webtoon”. By May 2021, each episode also carried an extra the site never got in that form: a closing sketch drawn by Veronica from suggestions sent in by patrons, with the suggesting patron credited at the bottom of the episode.

Progress and hiatus

By May 2021 the mirror had made its way to Feline Festivities, Tess’s Christmas party. Announcements for new episodes were still appearing in July 2023, including “Boy Toy, part 1”. By late 2025, Veronica was fielding asks about the hiatus. “The webtoons version did run for a good while!” she said, adding that she felt “sad it stopped updating” and hoped Oliver would find the energy to queue up more pages one day.

In December, Veronica explained that Webtoon “just didn’t get us that much of a boost in readers”, which had left Oliver, who prepares the pages for the mirror, feeling demotivated. He “does plan to continue the webtoon version one day, but there’s just been more important things to do first.” Veronica also pointed out a silver lining to flying under the radar there: if the comic were to do well, Webtoon “would absolutely get mad at us for some of the stuff that happens in it and make us change it LMAO”. In the meantime, the site still lists “BCB on Webtoon” among its community links, RSS feed and all.

Trivia

• The main site gained its own “Webtoon style” vertical-scroll reading option in the May 2021 archive overhaul, pitched as “sharper and higher-resolution” than the Webtoon itself.
• Oliver has recommended Tumblr, Tapas or Webtoon as “the best thing to post your comic on to start”, while grumbling in the same breath that “we all give our work to corporations now.”
