Timeline of story events

This timeline is adapted from a fan-made, public-only chronology of the story events of Bittersweet Candy Bowl, including flashbacks.

Members-only BCI material and other non-public story material are outside its scope. Exact dates sit alongside approximate placements based on birthdays, school years, dialogue and seasonal clues. It’s a best-effort sort of thing!

1987-1999: Births and Early Childhood

• Lucy meets Mike: In preschool, Lucy chooses Mike as her playmate. She persistently plays with his toys and makes herself his rival. She avoids others.

• August 10: Mike turns 5.

September

• Daisy and Sandy are friends.

• Kindergarten without Mike: Mike and Lucy are in different kindergarten classes. She fails to make friends in his absence, being shunned by the girls for her rough play and by the boys for being a girl, and accepts solitude.

• September 27: Daisy turns 5.

November

• November 7: Lucy turns 5.

1998

August

• August 10: Mike turns 6.

September

• Mike and Lucy reunite: Mike and Lucy are reunited in first grade. At first Mike is annoyed, but he and Lucy genuinely become friends, and she explains her experience with others to him.

1999

June

• Augustus moves: Augustus’s family moves farther from Roseville.

• August 10: Mike turns 7.

• Mike and Sandy meet: They share a third-grade class. She shows him a spot under a tree that she likes. He starts tutoring her and she feeds him fish. Mike is so enamored with Sandy that he stops paying attention to Lucy, although she is always hovering in the periphery. Sandy stops paying attention to Daisy, who resents Mike for disrupting their friendship.

• September 27: Daisy turns 8.

• October 1: Augustus turns 10.

• Lucy toughs it out: As Mike fawns over Sandy, Lucy resolves not to cry about it.

• Paulo is barked out of the park: Paulo visits a park and four high-school-aged bullies bark him out of it, leaving him with a barking phobia.

2001

March

• March 14: Sandy turns 10.

• April 16: Paulo turns 9.

• Mike and Sandy kiss: Sandy tells Daisy about the kiss, and Mike tells Lucy.

July

• Meeting Alejandro: Augustus steals milk from a convenience store and is noticed by Alejandro, Toby, and Melanie. He accepts Alejandro’s invitation to hang out with them.

• Shoplifting haul: Augustus proves his worth to his new friends with the power of crime.

• July 12: Blur hatches.

August

• Augustus saves his mom: Augustus’s mother is passed out drunk in their home, choking on her own vomit. Augustus turns her onto her side.

• August 10: Mike turns 9: Mike celebrates his birthday with Sandy.

• Lucy finds Yashy’s egg: Lucy finds Yashy’s egg during the summer before fourth grade.

• Sandy moves: Sandy leaves before fourth grade starts, after spending most of the summer with Mike.

• Lucy supports Mike: After Sandy leaves, Mike mopes under the tree.

• September 1: Yashy hatches.

• September 27: Daisy turns 9.

October

• October 1: Augustus turns 11.

• Melanie wants out: Augustus brings Melanie a soda on the college campus she hangs out on. She has a black eye. She talks about wanting out of her situation and her desire to get a scholarship.

• Lucy wins a race: Lucy beats Mike in a race on field day. He walks.

• Paulo’s mother remarries: She takes the last name Muir.

• Sam vs. Mike: Mike and Lucy are roughhousing when Sam picks her up from elementary school. He is not a fan of Mike.

May

• May 5: Molly turns 6.

• Fourth grade ends for the main cast.

• Scavenging: Augustus brings stolen supplies to Alejandro’s group.

July

• July 25: Abbey turns 10.

August

• August 10: Mike turns 10.

• September 1: Yashy turns 1.

• Daisy’s crush on Mike: Daisy develops a crush on Mike in fifth grade.

• September 27: Daisy turns 10.

• October 1: Augustus turns 12.

• Talking marriage: Lucy asks Mike if he would consider marrying her.

• November 7: Lucy turns 10.

December

• Paulo moves to Roseville: He joins Lucy’s fifth-grade class partway through the year. Daisy offers to help him. He has a crush on Lucy, but doesn’t know how to approach her. Lucy later describes a crush on him at this point.

• Paulo’s little sister is born.

2003

January

• January 4: Sue turns 11.

February

• Mike gives Paulo money.

• David turns 10.

March

• Abbey bandages Charlotte: Abbey helps his mother wrap an injury after his father hurts her.

• Abbey discovers the affair: After school, a friend takes Abbey on a shortcut to his house. Abbey notices his father’s car and sees Abraham embrace Cynthia.
  
  When Abbey returns home, he is upset and startles Charlotte.

• Organizing: Augustus helps Alejandro plan their activities, notebook in hand.

April

• April 16: Paulo turns 11.

May

• May 5: Molly turns 7.

• Mother’s Day: Paulo and David bond over having single parents.

June

• Abraham beats Charlotte: Charlotte is brushing Abbey’s hair when he accidentally mentions Cynthia. She confronts Abraham, who beats her and leaves. Abbey instructs Molly to bring a note to the neighbors. He runs to Cynthia’s, where Abraham is preparing to flee and trying to get a dismayed Cynthia to come with him. When Abraham goes to his car, Abbey blocks him. The police, summoned by Molly and the neighbors, arrive and arrest Abraham, who tells Abbey that he has ruined their family.

• Abbey and Molly move to Roseville: Janet and Kevin take in Abbey and Molly as foster children and drive them to Roseville. It is not without bumps.

July

• Mike and Lucy almost drown: Mike hits his head and falls into the river during a race against Paulo. Lucy tries to save him despite not knowing how to swim herself. Paulo saves the pair from drowning.

• Charlotte dies: Charlotte is scheduled for surgery. She speaks with Janet, who is fostering Abbey and Molly, and makes the nurse promise that the children will not be informed if anything goes wrong. She dies of complications.

• July 25: Abbey turns 11.

August

• August 10: Mike turns 11.

September

• September 1: Yashy turns 2.

• Lucy gets harassed: Starting on the first day of sixth grade, people harass Lucy because of her looks. She resolves to fend off creeps with her fists.

• September 27: Daisy turns 11.

October

• October 1: Augustus turns 13.

• Hyper Space Cadets: Paulo, David, and Daisy play Hyper Space Cadets.

November

• Lucy turns 11: Mike fails to surprise Lucy for her birthday.

• Paulo learns to flirt: Insecure about talking to girls, Paulo watches how a high schooler flirts at the mall and emulates him. He builds his confidence practicing with other girls, hoping his new style will make Lucy like him.

December

• Paulo hits on Lucy: With a crush on Lucy since his arrival in Roseville, Paulo finally feels confident enough to hit on her. Unfortunately, she faces unwanted attention from the start of sixth grade and reacts extremely negatively.

• Molly hopes: On Christmas Eve, Molly waits with Abbey, hoping for her mother’s return.

2004

January

• January 4: Sue turns 12.

February

• David turns 11.

March

• Melanie kisses Augustus: Augustus puts together a new outfit for himself, and Melanie insists he needs a piercing to complete the look. After piercing his eyebrow, she kisses him and takes him to bed. They agree Alejandro cannot find out. Melanie dreams of escaping with a scholarship.

• Keeping it secret: Augustus and Melanie keep their relationship from Alejandro.

April

• April 7: Chirpy hatches: Yashy catches Chirpy’s egg after a snake chases her mother out of a tree. It promptly hatches and Yashy adopts her.

• April 16: Paulo turns 12.

May

• May 5: Molly turns 8.

June

• Mike takes Lucy to a dance: Mike and Lucy go to a middle-school dance as friends.

July

• Finding Blur: On a stormy day walking home from Lucy’s, Mike discovers Lily pulling Blur away from a tree struck by lightning. He takes them to Lucy’s to heal. Blur has amnesia, and Mike takes him in. Lily decides to stick around.

• July 25: Abbey turns 12.

August

• August 10: Mike turns 12.

September

• September 1: Yashy turns 3.

• September 27: Daisy turns 12.

October

• Abbey vs. the bully: When Molly is late being picked up from school, Abbey finds a bully teasing her for her ears. He slams the bully against a fence and demands he leave her alone and return her ribbon. Molly is upset by the violence and compares Abbey to their dad. Abbey is horrified.

• October 1: Augustus turns 14.

November

• Lucy turns 12: Mike fails to surprise Lucy for her birthday.

• Melanie’s junior year: Augustus and Melanie maintain their relationship in secret, meeting at the college campus.

December

• December 13: Tess turns 15.

• Molly hopes: As Christmas approaches again, Molly and Abbey remain optimistic that they might hear from their mother.

• Mike kisses Lucy: Mike and Lucy play in the snow. He gets cold and they go into her house, where he calls his mother for a pickup because the weather is bad. Upstairs waiting, Lucy suggests a scarf to keep him warm. Mike confesses his feelings and kisses her. After a second, Lucy panics and pushes him off. She asks him to go, and he promises to wait until she is ready. It is Lucy’s first kiss.

2005

January

• January 4: Sue turns 13.

February

• Mike buys a scarf: Mike buys a scarf to match Lucy’s eyes. Lucy knows how picky he is about the color, but believes it is meant to match Sandy.

• David turns 12.

April

• Lucy passes out in PE: With swimming lessons as the new activity in PE, Lucy passes out. Mike catches her before she falls into the water.

• April 7: Chirpy turns 1.

• April 16: Paulo turns 13.

• Milk spill: Sue wipes up her milk spill with Mike’s scarf. Paulo chides her.

May

• May 5: Molly turns 9.

• Science lab: David wipes chemicals on Mike’s scarf, sending Mike to the hospital and leaving Lucy to finish the lab by herself.

• Tess goes to senior prom: She goes as a freshman with a senior.

June

• Chris is born.

July

• Mike comforts Lucy: After their near-drowning, Lucy is anxious near the river. Mike acts as a buffer between her and the water.

• July 25: Abbey turns 13.

August

• August 10: Mike turns 13.

• Melanie is discovered: Alejandro yanks Melanie’s hair, angry that her hairstyle reminds him of her ex. Augustus sits by without intervening.
  
  Later, Augustus apologizes for doing nothing. Melanie says it is the right choice, since intervening might make Alejandro suspicious, and kisses him. Toby witnesses this and reports her infidelity to Alejandro. Augustus returns to the apartment to find Alejandro beating her and demanding to know who she is seeing. Augustus tries to pull him off, and Melanie swipes Augustus’s face, scarring him to protect him from scrutiny. He passes out and later learns that Toby takes Melanie to the hospital. When Augustus visits her there, she explains that the incident prompts her grandmother to take her in. She will be safe, but they will no longer be able to see each other.
  
  Afterward, Toby reveals that he knows Augustus is the one kissing Melanie. He uses this to blackmail Augustus, forcing him to be at his beck and call on pain of telling Alejandro.

September

• September 1: Yashy turns 4.

• Simple Pleasures: Lucy enjoys a Saturday in the park.

• September 27: Daisy turns 13.

October

• Augustus turns 15.

• Lucy vs. the bug: Lucy wipes a bug on Mike’s scarf.

November

• Lucy turns 13: Mike fails to surprise Lucy for her birthday by hiding in a bush.

December

• December 11: Amaya turns 13.

• December 13: Tess turns 16.

• December 20: Lily’s birthday: This hedgehog’s age remains a mystery.

• Molly hopes: Another Christmas Eve, and Molly is still hoping her mother will return. Abbey is losing hope.

2006

January

• January 4: Sue turns 14.

• Gaming Rivalry: Mike and Lucy play video games.

• January 17: Jordan turns 15.

February

• Merry Snow Day: Lucy wants a snow day. School has other ideas. David considers going on strike.

• David turns 13.

• Unfit for Education: Yashy wants equality. The science fair happens. Mike thinks of Lucy.

March

• March 14: Sandy turns 15.

• The Burden of Parenthood: Mike and Daisy are paired to take care of a baby doll for health class, as are Lucy and Paulo. They switch partners.

April

• April 7: Chirpy turns 2.

• Flying Lessons: Chirpy wants Yashy to fly.

• Prom Preparation: Daisy helps prepare the spring dance. Girls flirt with Mike.

• April 16: Paulo turns 14.

• Helping Hands: Paulo and Daisy rescue a bird and bring it to Lucy’s to recover.

• Show and Tell: Yashy takes advantage of Lucy’s bad ear. The kids discuss cat breeds.

• Gone Fishing: The class takes a field trip to the aquarium. Mike reassures Lucy. Daisy is jealous. Paulo antagonizes a sea lion.

May

• Pep Rally: Daisy cheers at the pep rally. The volume hurts Mike, who tries to escape.

• May 5: Molly turns 10.

• Off to the Movies: Mike and Lucy leave Yashy at home and go to the movies, where they encounter Paulo, David, and Daisy. They watch a film together. Paulo explains his barking phobia, and Daisy encourages his vulnerability. Mike and Lucy discuss the ending of the movie and belated love confessions.

• Puppy Love: Mike receives love letters in his locker from his many admirers.

• Confrontation
  • Getting Mugged: Tensions run high as Mike, Lucy, Daisy, Paulo, and Sue get lost after a trip to a museum to research a school project and end up in a bad area. They visit a bar, one of the only establishments still open, so Sue can call her mother for a pickup. Mike takes up Alejandro’s wager that he can’t eat a bowl of liquor candy in under a minute. He succeeds, gets drunk from the candy, and runs down an alleyway following music until he finds its source, a radio, and smashes it. Alejandro and Toby corner him and his friends and try to mug them.
    
    A defiant Paulo is incapacitated by Toby’s barking. Sue tries to reason with Alejandro and gets batted around. Mike intervenes but struggles to fight in his drunken state. Lucy incapacitates Toby, and Alejandro’s undivided attention falls on her. He makes threatening sexual advances, and she smashes his jaw together, damaging his teeth. She thinks she’s won and goes to check on Mike when Alejandro grabs her. For a horrible moment it seems no one will help her, before Mike rejoins the fray. Together they rout Alejandro.
    
    Sue’s mother picks up the kids, who say their injuries come from play-fighting. Daisy talks to Paulo about being frozen through the whole fight.
  • Day After: The kids give their papers at school, and Daisy apologizes to Mike for her behavior the previous day. After school, Mike and Lucy talk. He appreciates how she protects him and promises to look out for her too. She kisses him.

• Aftermath: Mike can’t stop thinking about Lucy’s kiss.

June

• Field Day: It’s field day! Stacy admires David. Mike and Lucy get competitive. Stacy suffers. Mike breaks a leg. And David wins the race!

• Roger breaks Aaron’s arm: Roger breaks Aaron’s arm. Rachel and Jessica go to the hospital.

• Jessica approaches Craig: Jessica angles to get leverage on Roger, but is too uncomfortable to go through with her plan.

• Tess ruins Jessica’s reputation: Craig tells Tess and Roger about Jessica approaching him, dismissing her as a kid out of her depth. Tess takes it rather less lightly. She spreads rumors about Jessica and Craig, humiliating Jessica and ruining her reputation. She slams Jessica into a locker and tells her she’s untouchable with Roger backing her.
  
  Rachel pretends not to hear any of the rumors.

• Unfulfilled Fantasy: Lucy discovers Mike and Sandy have been exchanging letters for years. Mike and Lily discuss his history with Sandy and his feelings about her and Lucy.

• Eighth-grade prom: The spring dance is finally here! David dances with Flower girl. Paulo feels up girls. Daisy misses Mike.
  
  Mike goes to the tree to contemplate his relationships with Lucy and Sandy. Lucy skips prom and stays home, where Mike shows up to apologize for his treatment of her in third grade.

• Monday after prom: The kids discuss prom.

• Last day of middle school: David floods the halls with chocolate ice cream. Course placements are handed out. Teachers bid farewell. Daisy gets teary.

• Chris turns 1.

July

• Sue moves: Sue’s address changes.

• July 25: Abbey turns 14.

August

• Sue’s Canada trip: Sue goes to Canada on a work trip with her father.

• Summer reading: Mike does his summer reading and thinks of Sandy. Lucy, Daisy, Paulo, and David show up.

• August 10: Mike turns 14. Lobsters and friends are involved.

• Blurry Memories: Mike gets ready for honors English. The pets squabble.

September

• September 1: Yashy’s Birthday: Yashy turns 5. She worries about being forgotten in the back-to-school rush, but her friends remember.

• Hot Pursuit: Mike sees Sandy on TV at a parade and dashes off to Maraschino to find her, despite Lily’s advice. Lucy tags along without knowing the goal. After getting lost around the city yet always finding themselves at the same dock, they finally find the parade, but not Sandy. Defeated, they return home, only for Mike to learn that Sandy stops by his house in his absence and leaves him a bonsai modeled after their childhood tree. The missed opportunity hurts, but the gift reassures him that she remembers what they have.

• Lucy comforts Mike: Mike sneaks into Lucy’s house at night, and she comforts him over his failure to find Sandy.

• Enter High School: New classes, new teachers, new friends! Mike, Lucy, David, Paulo, Daisy, and Sue conveniently have homeroom together, alongside Tess.

• A Difficult Choice: Despite Mike’s insistence that he’s single, his infatuation with Sandy becomes evident to his friends. Paulo labels him a cheater for his behavior toward Sandy and Lucy. A mob of girls forms against him and eggs him, ruining his scarf.

• A New Leaf: Calling Sandy: Mike reads through Sandy’s old letters and finds her phone number again. They talk for hours and agree to consider themselves boyfriend and girlfriend.

• A New Leaf: At school: Mike is on cloud nine despite arriving late. He reveals that he and Sandy are now officially dating.

• Wardrobe Malfunction: Mike isn’t wearing his scarf. It turns out everyone has been wiping things on it for years.

• Daisy’s Birthday: Daisy turns 14: Daisy receives an unwelcome gift from her friends.

October

• October 1: Augustus turns 16.

• Humble Approach: Daisy is feeling down and falling down. Abbey lifts her up. Paulo questions Abbey’s name. Abbey asks Lucy if she’s insecure. It doesn’t go well.

• Call with Sandy: Mike tells Sandy about Lucy hitting him in the shin. Sandy is upset.

• Left Behind: Tess gets Mike to tell her about Lucy and gives him a scarf because he’s cold.

• Flirting with Disaster: Tess and Abbey doubt Lucy’s support of Mike and Sandy’s relationship and try to push her and Mike together. Mike is ruffled, David assists with a truth-or-dare setup, and Lucy claims her first crush is Paulo after a whispered exchange.

November

• Lucy’s Birthday: Lucy turns 14: Mike gives up trying to surprise Lucy for her birthday. Paulo gives it a shot and sets up balloons in the park. Mike gives Lucy a gift riffing on her fifth-grade crush on Paulo.

December

• December 11: Amaya turns 14.

• December 13: Tess turns 17.

• Before break: Mike dreams of Sandy. Tess invites people to her Christmas party.

• December 20: Lily’s birthday: This hedgehog’s age remains a mystery.

• December 24: Feline Festivities: Lily convinces a reluctant Lucy to go to Tess’s party, encouraging her to keep Mike company and watch out for Chirpy. Chirpy misses her mother. Paulo rigs his hat with mistletoe, but backs off from a flustered Daisy. Mike thinks of Sandy and upsets Chirpy. Lucy doesn’t want anyone to notice her singing. Katie drinks thorns. Tess gives Paulo a kiss for good behavior. Mike arrives home to find a gift from Sandy.
  
  Tess’s mansion still manages to surprise Mike, despite his visit in Left Behind. Apparently the cold leaves quite an impression.

2007

January

• January 4: Sue turns 15.

• Midterm Time: Preparing: Mike makes the honor roll. Daisy helps Tess study.

• January 17: Jordan turns 16.

• Midterm Time: Test day: Tess excels at her midterms. Daisy realizes she is so focused on helping Tess that her own revision falls by the wayside. David enrages his math teacher.

• Tread Carefully: Daisy, Paulo, and David have some fun at a crosswalk.

• Troubled Waters: At school: The new semester begins, and Lucy is excused from gym class for the swimming unit. She thinks about the time she and Mike almost drown.
  
  After the period, she finally thanks Paulo for saving them.
  
  Mike speaks to Paulo, learning who their rescuer is for the first time.

• Mike’s swim record: Motivated by Paulo’s claim to be a better swimmer and climber, Mike puts his all into swimming and sets a new school record.

• Carry On: After Mike sets a new swimming record, Daisy admires his athleticism. Augustus approaches and compliments her, claiming to recognize her from cheerleading at his little brother’s soccer games. She is unnerved by the attention from someone two grades older, but he calls her cute and beautiful despite her insecurities about her curls.
  
  Katie talks to Mike about Lucy’s exemption from swimming. She joins Lucy on the sidelines, claiming to have her period.
  
  At lunch, Daisy tries to ask Paulo whether guys find her attractive, but Tess’s arrival distracts him. Daisy feels teased, and Augustus sits next to her and compliments her. Tess is wary, but says nothing.
  
  Katie splashes Lucy with bottled water.
  
  After school, Lucy walks to the river to try to overcome her hydrophobia, but turns back before reaching the water. Augustus follows her.

February

• Follow Me: During lunch, Lucy tries to hide Mike’s relationship with Sandy from Yashy by starting a food fight.
  
  Daisy is down about Mike’s relationship status, and Augustus reminds her that other guys exist, drawing distrust from Abbey and Tess. When Tess accuses him of having an agenda, he counters that she isn’t being straightforward with the freshmen either. Paulo gets defensive of her, and Augustus leaves.
  
  Daisy isn’t sure what to make of Augustus’s interest, but Paulo’s flirting with Tess is wearing thin. Abbey is concerned about Daisy’s absence, while Paulo dismisses it.

• February 11: Rachel turns 16.

• Onwards to Adventure: David turns 14: David skips school, kidnaps a child, stalks Flower girl, and has dinner with his friends... after being released by the police.

March

• Bonding: Daisy at lunch: As Daisy spends more lunch periods with Augustus, Abbey and Tess worry.
  
  Augustus tells Daisy about Tess and Roger’s behavior the previous year. Daisy feels more alienated from her friends since Tess joins the group, and Augustus asks if she is jealous. He tells her he could make her feel desirable. They almost kiss, but Daisy dashes off, still caught up in her feelings for Mike.

• March 14: Sandy turns 16.

• March 15: Jessica turns 16.

• Under Pressure: David retells the story of his birthday over and over. Lucy tries to keep Mike and Sandy’s relationship from Yashy. Augustus takes notes.
  
  During swimming, girls admire Mike. He approaches Daisy and tells her she is missed at the table.
  
  Mike, Paulo, and David are tasked with racing. Daisy wishes for attention, absentmindedly swims into a wall, and gets it when Mike pulls her up. She flirts with a flustered Mike, and Paulo accuses him of being a cheater.
  
  After her trip to the nurse’s office, Abbey catches up with Daisy, worried about her and warning that Augustus may not have her best interests in mind. She doesn’t take it well.
  
  Paulo asks Tess to junior prom, and she stipulates that they go just as friends. Someone she bullies with Roger the previous year corners her. Abbey, in the junior hall looking for Augustus, punches him.

• Out of the Frame: Sue creates a club to protest the narrative focus on the main characters. Alec McCain points out that this is an ineffectual strategy, and Stacy proposes a mob to voice their grievances. They yell at Lucy, and Sue apologizes to her. Lucy points out that nothing prevents Sue from sitting at their table. Sue does just that, only to discover how much drama comes with being closer to the spotlight.

• A Different Side
  • Lunch and gym: The pep rally is today! Paulo, Lucy, and David torment Mike with volume.
    
    Paulo is simmering about Tess being bullied, and the bullying becomes all the more apparent during a game of kickball. The rest of the friends start catching on, although they don’t know why she is being targeted. Abbey and Paulo are not happy.
    
    Daisy overhears Jessica and Rachel badmouthing Tess.
  • The pep rally: Abbey is late because he is “talking to someone” and looks mildly scuffed. Jay, one of the kickball bullies, later gives Tess an apology with the marks of Abbey’s intervention still on him.
    
    Lucy sings beautifully but gets self-conscious. Daisy accidentally shows her underwear during the cheerleading routine, then leans into the attention as a chance to be seen as more sexual.
    
    After teacher-student games, Tess is shoved into the spotlight and jeered at. Paulo says she makes up for her past behavior. Daisy joins Jessica and Rachel’s animosity, yelling at him to shut up and asking why people with nothing to make up for don’t get better treatment.
    
    After the rally, Tess tells Mike and Lucy about her behavior last year. Lucy’s opinion of her falls, but they don’t reject her.

• Call with Sandy: Mike is hoarse: Mike’s voice is hoarse from screaming at Lucy. Sandy asks if he loves Lucy, and he denies it. She says a real friend would never treat him like that.

June

• Rising Temperature
  • School and Abbey’s house: Paulo and Tess are excited about junior prom. Paulo remembers an essay due tomorrow and convinces Abbey to help him with it.
    
    Katie shuns Daisy for not being popular enough to hang out with her. Daisy takes this to mean that Rachel and Jessica would reject her too. Abbey sees the interaction and offers to spend time with her, forgetting his commitment to tutor Paulo and Mike. Mike spending time with Abbey only hurts Daisy more, and she leaves upset.
    
    Abbey, Paulo, and Mike go to Abbey’s house after school and meet Janet and Kevin. Mike talks with them about their family. Abbey is frustrated with Paulo, who contributes little to the essay and doesn’t even read the books it covers.
    
    After Paulo leaves, Abbey and Mike talk about him. Abbey calls him a “worthless imbecile” and hopes Tess will stop entertaining him. Mike comes to Paulo’s defense, comparing him to Lucy as someone worth knowing despite a rough exterior. Abbey gets angry about Mike’s failure to notice the warning signs with Daisy and accuses him of leading Lucy on. The fight escalates until a tearful Molly intercedes. Mike leaves ashamed and resolves to check on Daisy.
  • Daisy after school: Daisy goes to the mall alone, feeling unnecessary to her friends. Augustus surprises her there. He encourages her to act like the confident, attractive girl she wants to be to get Mike’s attention, and lays out a plan.
    
    Lucy spots Augustus and Daisy at the mall, but doesn’t speak with either.
    
    Mike catches up with Daisy on her walk home and apologizes for not paying more attention to her. She convinces him to go to the carnival “as friends”. Augustus lurks.

• Love My Way: Carnival and prom: At school, Paulo asks why Mike is going on a date with Daisy. Mike denies that it’s romantic, and Daisy is offended by Paulo’s criticism. Paulo and Tess are excited for the dance. Lucy tells Abbey about spotting Augustus with Daisy at the mall.
  
  Tess and Paulo go to prom. Paulo is down after overhearing gossip about Tess, and the night doesn’t go as he hopes. Tess makes it clear that, even though he is one of her best friends, they are going in different directions with her graduation a year away. She doesn’t think they should date or wait for each other. They kiss with the understanding that they won’t get together.
  
  Daisy takes Mike to the carnival for a romantic evening on Augustus’s advice. She keeps pushing the romantic envelope. When Mike calls her out on it, she suggests Sandy isn’t faithful to him. She kisses him, and he rejects her.
  
  Upset, she runs off to be alone. Augustus appears to present himself as a romantic alternative. Daisy is distraught by his manipulations and rejects him, but he oversteps her boundaries, making her feel unsafe and refusing to take no for an answer.
  
  Abbey intercedes. Augustus goads him about his father’s violence, leaving him distraught. Daisy smacks Augustus and realizes his ties to Alejandro. He leaves, and she consoles Abbey, who tells her his family’s story. Daisy tries to support him and appreciates his concern for her.

• Moving On: Augustus: Augustus meets with Toby and Alejandro with a list of Mike and Lucy’s classes and after-school haunts.

• June 11: Matt turns 17.

• Moving On: End of school: Finals are over. Daisy and Mike apologize and make up. Course placements are handed out. The friends enjoy one last lunch together. Tess takes one last look at Roger before he graduates.
  
  After school, Abbey and Daisy walk home. He tells her about his decision to see a counselor, and she pledges to support him. At home, he starts opening up to Janet about his parents.

• Call with Sandy: Mike’s nosebleed: Mike has a nosebleed, and Lucy is to blame. Sandy does not like Lucy at all.

• Invitation: Mail received: A free trip to the Silvershore Isles, courtesy of Tess, is apparently a tough sell to Mike, Lucy, Abbey, and Daisy.
  
  Tess solves some of this problem with kidnapping.

• Sandy goes to Europe: Sandy heads to Europe for business and stays through the end of summer. Bad timing for Mike.

• Invitation: Departure: The plane is loaded up. Before takeoff, Abbey’s friends surprise him with early birthday gifts.
  
  There is an additional surprise: Daisy is staying home to support Abbey. Alec McCain takes the empty spot instead.

• Arrival: Flight and hotel: The friends fly into the Silvershore Isles and have a first night that is not quite as quiet as anyone might hope.

• Arrival: First full day: After breakfast, the kids go to the beach. David doesn’t wear trunks. Paulo hits on girls and gets beaned with a volleyball from Tess. Lucy saves Yashy from a big wave and faints. Zachary carries her out of the surf, and they all get lunch together. Lucy pressures Mike to keep his relationship with Sandy from Yashy.

• July 25: Abbey turns 15.

• Enjoying vacation: Boat rides! Climbing! Surfing! Dancing games! The vacation has plenty of bright spots.

• Daisy and Abbey kiss: Daisy accompanies Abbey to his first therapy appointment to support him.
  
  Afterward, they go for a picnic and run into Jessica and Rachel, who clarify that they never like Katie in the first place. They ask if Abbey is the crush they keep hearing about, flustering Daisy and Abbey. Abbey admits his feelings. Daisy still has feelings for Mike, but his confession moves her.

• Search and Rescue: When Mike goes missing, Lucy’s dependence on him is stripped bare.

• Intervention: Mike barely tries to comfort Lucy. When he catches Zachary snooping, Zachary asks him about it. Mike says Lucy doesn’t love him; she needs him.
  
  During truth or dare, Sue asks Tess who she wishes could be her first sexual partner, and Tess says Paulo. Paulo gets frustrated with Tess discouraging him from flirting with others when they aren’t dating, and runs back to the hotel. David pursues him and suggests other girls instead of Tess. Daisy’s name hits a nerve.
  
  Later, Paulo and Mike discuss their rough day. Paulo takes a walk and runs into Tess.

• Return: Night: Zachary sees Lucy outside and talks to her about Mike. He tells her the relationship isn’t as secure as she thinks and that Mike considers her a chore. He encourages her to be kinder to Mike, but also to look beyond him to the other friends who care about her, so her “obsession” doesn’t end up hurting her.
  
  Back at the hotel, Lucy walks in on Tess and Paulo getting frisky. She moves to Mike and Paulo’s room and tells Mike she needs to sleep there.
  
  She curls up with Mike on the floor after he falls asleep, but gets up before he wakes.

• Return: Going home: The kids leave the hotel, with Zachary and Catherine wishing them well.
  
  Catherine and Zachary have a conversation about their relationship.
  
  On the plane, Paulo admits to David that the talk about Daisy leaves him feeling strange, and he doesn’t go through with having sex with Tess. David tells him Daisy awaits him at home. They land to a greeting from Daisy and Abbey, newly a couple.

• New Beginnings: Daisy tells Lucy how she and Abbey get together, filling in the story Lucy cannot hear well at the airport. Daisy is happy, but Lucy’s support is rather qualified: she treats Abbey as the nearest available substitute for Mike and warns Daisy not to use him.
  
  Meanwhile, Molly asks Abbey if he and Daisy are getting married.

• Pick Me Up: Lucy seeks out Mike to tell him her feelings. She finds him reading outside and yells to cover her nervousness, sparking an immediate fight. Mike expresses his frustration with her, describing a pattern of supporting her through her moods and crises only to face more berating and pestering. He says he won’t tolerate it forever and asks to be left alone. He walks off.
  
  Lucy tries to convince herself she doesn’t need him, but is upset. Paulo walks by and mixes attempted support with attempted flirting, at least shifting her mood from sad to angry. He walks her home and asks about another fight with Mike. She opens up, and Paulo takes her side while advising her to apologize.
  
  Mike appears at an inopportune time. He and Lucy both apologize, and they go off to play video games together.

  • Wonderland: Lucy’s dream: Lucy wakes on the first day of school from a dream about Mike and Sandy. In it, she takes a leap of faith into the water, trusting Mike to catch her. He does, only to turn into Sandy, who drowns her while warning her not to be sinful. It is Lucy’s third time having the dream this week.
  • A Distance Apart: Before school: The school year is here.
  • A Distance Apart: School and confession: The friends begin their new school year. Afterward, Lucy confesses her love to Mike.

• Unrequited: Friends find out: Mike and Lucy go about the next school day. Their friends pick up that something is wrong. Daisy declares it time for “girl talk” and goes outside with Lucy, Sue, and Tess. Lucy doesn’t want to open up, but eventually admits to confessing her love to Mike and being rejected.
  
  The girls storm back in, outraged, but Mike maintains his position and points out his relationship with Sandy. Sue buys Lucy a slushie and tries to help her find the positives, reminding her that Mike isn’t her only friend.

• Another Shoulder: After school, Abbey and Daisy try to navigate the fallout between Mike and Lucy. Daisy pushes the pair together without improving anything. Lucy goes off, and Mike refuses to chase her despite Daisy’s urging. Daisy calls him a jerk.

• Paulo starts driving lessons: Rodrigo starts teaching Paulo to drive.

• October 15: Casting Call: Sue finishes the manuscript for her play and encourages her friends to try out. Secretly, the play is her scheme to save Mike and Lucy’s friendship. Mike gives a less-than-stellar audition, but she casts him as the lead. As auditions wind down, Sue panics over Lucy’s absence. She runs through the halls, finds Lucy making faces at Paulo in detention, and drags her onstage. Lucy gets the part without much of an audition either. Jessica doubts the casting choices.

• Back and Forth
  • Paulo and Jessica: David notices Paulo and Lucy’s bantering and asks if they are a couple. Paulo admits to making out with her but stopping things from going further, and David questions his masculinity.
    
    Feeling insecure, Paulo decides to hook up with someone and hits on Jessica. She is disinterested until he admits to a romantic attachment with Tess. Jessica decides to weaponize the reputation Tess gives her by sleeping with him. She takes Paulo to a 21-and-over club, where they get tipsy and hook up in the bathroom, losing their virginities to each other. Afterward, she makes him feel inexperienced while privately feeling dirty herself. She suggests he ask Rachel out, since Rachel has a crush on him.
  • Paulo and Rachel: Paulo asks Rachel out. Lucy and Tess are upset with him all day for dating people he barely knows while leaving his entanglements with them unresolved.
    
    Rachel takes him to a drive-in theater, where they hook up. She suspects he is a virgin, leaving him embarrassed again. Rachel sincerely likes Paulo, but she also wants to upset Tess.
  • Paulo and Jasmine: At school, David asks how Paulo is doing. Paulo admits to feeling bad and inexperienced after his hookups with Rachel and Jessica. David encourages him to date someone younger instead. Lucy seethes quietly over his escapades.
    
    With David’s urging, Paulo asks out Jasmine after catching her eye in the hall. They go on a movie date that night, with Amaya helping them get tickets to an R-rated horror film. They have a good time, and he bikes her home.
    
    Amaya calls Sue about the encounter.

• Up to Bat: Paulo brings Jasmine water while she practices baseball.

• Mischief Night: It’s Halloween, complete with a poisoned-candy scare. Sue tries to be supportive of Lucy.

November

• Play rehearsal: Sue’s cast rehearses.

• Feline Filibuster: The debate: Abbey and Sue debate for the position of secretary. Abbey pushes a zero-tolerance bullying policy that ruffles Paulo’s feathers and gets Mike and Lucy thinking. Abbey grows angry at Sue’s description of the policy as fascistic. Paulo yells “hit her” from the audience, and Abbey has a meltdown. Daisy takes over campaigning.
  
  Paulo campaigns to get Daisy elected. Jasmine notices his efforts.

• November 5: Feline Filibuster: Sue loses the vote to Daisy, who hands the position to Abbey. Daisy doesn’t realize Paulo campaigns for her.

  • Lucy turns 15: Paulo leaves candy in Lucy’s locker, and Daisy invites the girls to a birthday party in her honor. As the day goes on, Lucy dreads the possibility that Mike won’t wish her a happy birthday at all, let alone make his usual attempt to surprise her. She despondently tears up the invitation. Augustus approaches her while she sits alone outside, and she flips him off.
  • The party: Daisy hosts a birthday party for Lucy. It is not a friction-free guest list.
    
    Rachel and Jessica are less than pleased by Tess’s presence. Rachel makes the best of it, while Jessica considers walking out.
    
    Jasmine appears in tears after a fight with Paulo over her availability to hang out.
    
    Lucy calls Jessica a slut for sleeping with Paulo, and the pair start to brawl. Tess admits responsibility for Jessica’s reputation.
    
    David is inexplicably under the bed.
    
    After lights-out, Lucy asks Daisy about Augustus.
  • Back at school: Lucy approaches Augustus to ask whether his earlier approach is an attempt to hit on her. He says no, and the pair clash, picking at each other’s insecurities.

• Picking up trash: Abbey’s policies leave Paulo picking up garbage during lunch. Jasmine chats with him and reveals that she is using her position as treasurer to cause Abbey a few troubles of his own.

• November 26: Call Waiting: Mike shows off his new phone and the better connection it offers to Sandy. David also reveals his new phone.
  
  Unnoticed by her friends, Lucy leaves the table to needle Augustus. He doesn’t explain himself, but he does talk about what he likes about Daisy and needles Lucy back.
  
  Paulo tries to convince Mike to sell the phone for Blasto. Mike sees Lucy talking to Augustus in the hallway and calls it “pathetic”.
  
  David and Paulo send Mike some inappropriate texts.

• On the Sidelines: Sue follows up with Lucy about that afternoon’s rehearsals. Lucy tries to join a conversation with Mike and Tess, but Mike pretends she isn’t there. Discouraged, Lucy sits in the grass, and Augustus sits next to her.

• On Our Own: Lucy tries to follow Augustus home after school. He doesn’t let her.

• Lucy follows Augustus: Lucy gets on Augustus’s bus and follows him home. She discovers how far away he lives and how rough his neighborhood is, then starts wondering how she will get home. She watches him steal dinner from a convenience store. At his house, his mother is passed out on the couch, and his room holds little more than an exposed mattress and a blanket.
  
  Lucy realizes he is going to see Alejandro.
  
  That night, she dreams of the events of Confrontation, with Daisy, Paulo, and Sue turning against her before Mike abandons her to Alejandro. She wakes hyperventilating and sobbing. Augustus’s attempts to stop the crying offer little comfort.

• Augustus opens up: Augustus tells Lucy about his history with Alejandro, Melanie, and Toby. She tells him he is a survivor and will find a way out. She also tells him to fix his haircut.

• Carry Me
  • Not connecting: Paulo and David talk about his relationship with Jasmine, but Paulo can’t quite compete with her busy schedule.
  • Day two: Frustration: When Paulo can’t spend time with Jasmine the next day, he vents to David and compares her availability with the other girls’. He decides they should break up if they can’t spend time together tomorrow.
  • Paulo carries Lucy: Paulo finds Lucy burning up with a fever on the way to school. She is determined to attend play rehearsal, and he points out that she could stay home until then. She boards a bus to try to reach a hospital, and he grabs onto the back. At its next stop, he climbs aboard. Lucy throws up on him, and both are kicked off. Paulo washes up at a beach shower.
    
    Far from Roseville, Paulo puts Lucy in a shopping cart and walks her back until they break it going down a hill. He returns to carrying her. She admits to being embarrassed to practice for the play, but sings for him anyway, and he is moved. He considers his relationship with Jasmine and what isn’t working, only to stumble upon Jasmine herself. School is over, and she arranges to cancel her violin lessons for more free time.
    
    David appears and runs Lucy the rest of the way to rehearsal. Mike gives her medication. Lucy is deliriously relieved that he is talking to her, although he isn’t amused.
    
    Jasmine and Paulo spend the rest of the day together, hoping for more to come.

December

• Dinner Time: Lucy’s mother makes dinner. Lucy shuts her pets out of her room but comes down to eat. When Jordan and her mother bring up Mike, Lucy changes the subject to Jordan’s attempts to win a later curfew for Friday with Tiff. The conversation circles back to how nice Mike is, and Blur arrives talking about Mike’s baby talk with Sandy. Lucy excuses herself. Her mother worries.

• Madison transfers: Madison transfers to Roseville High as a sophomore.

• December 11: Amaya turns 15.

• December 13: Fade Away: Tess turns 18. She reflects on her time and transformation throughout high school. Her friends surprise her with birthday gifts at lunch. Lucy is absent from the well-wishers.

• December: Mike and Lucy fall out: Ahead of winter break, the history class has one group project left: an essay with assigned partners. Mike and Lucy are paired after his outburst, much to his displeasure. They head to the library, where they run into Augustus. While Mike gets books, Lucy asks Augustus how he deals with rejection and admits to feeling suicidal. He is not particularly sympathetic, pointing out her safety and loving family. He says Daisy’s happiness keeps him going even if he can’t be part of it.
  
  Mike and Lucy return to his house to work on the essay, and Lucy initiates some gaming. They genuinely enjoy each other’s company until Mike gets a text from Sandy about a visit to the area next week. He is elated, but his mood toward Lucy instantly sours.
  
  He reveals that his conversations with Sandy make him realize how badly Lucy treats him. He intends to leave the table after the play in January and expects their friends to follow, leaving Lucy alone. He declares that he hates her, calls her a parasite, and suggests no one could love her for who she is.
  
  Mike runs out to tell his mother the good news, and Lucy throws up. She texts Sandy from Mike’s phone to say she will leave him alone. She takes the garbage liner and leaves, brushing off his concerns about the essay with a promise to finish it and leave it in his locker. She runs home crying, thinking of Augustus’s words about taking comfort in someone else’s happiness.

• Adult Supervision: Mike’s parents leave him and Haley to babysit Chris while they go out for the evening. Haley leaves to meet her friends, and Mike struggles with his first attempt at babysitting.

• At Loose Ends: Needing to know: Abbey worries that Molly’s gifts for their mother are unhealthy and doubts Charlotte will ever return. Daisy calls, excited about Tess’s party invitation in the mail, but Abbey is down and doesn’t want to attend. He needs to find out what happens to his mother. Janet promises to investigate and has him call Daisy back to accept the invitation after all.

• December 20: At Loose Ends: Abbey and Daisy go to Tess’s party, although his parents remain on his mind.
  
  Jasmine and Paulo pelt Abbey with snowballs. Daisy is down about Sandy not inviting her to the fashion show. David dances with Amaya. Tess gets drunk. Lucy doesn’t show.
  
  Abbey leaves early when Janet discovers what happens to Charlotte.

• December 21: At Loose Ends: Janet drives Abbey to his mother’s grave, with Daisy along for moral support. They leave Molly’s presents there. At home, Abbey considers how Charlotte’s wish for her children to have a normal life comes true.

• December 21: Piece of Cake: Paulo brings Lucy a piece of cake after her absence from Tess’s party. He worries about his feelings for her and his relationship with Jasmine. Slipping into the house, he sees Lucy sitting despondently in the dark before Jordan ushers him out.
  
  The sight troubles him as he and Jasmine make a snowman. He circles back to Lucy’s house, and Jordan tells him off.
  
  Jasmine lets him know she won’t be around for a week. Lucy calls to thank him for the cake.

• December 21: Just Beautiful: Mike sees Sandy’s fashion show, and the pair get a little time to talk. Sandy reveals Lucy’s text and encourages Mike to make up with her, judging the apology sincere. She gives him a blue scarf so they can keep matching and takes his striped one.
  
  Back home, Mike walks to Lucy’s house. Lucy hides from him while outside with her pets. Lily tells Mike to leave, and he does. Yashy doesn’t understand, believing him the cure for Lucy’s blues. Lucy yells that Mike has a girlfriend, leaving a distraught Yashy to be comforted by Lily and Chirpy.

• Buddy System: Mike’s phone bill: Mike and Paulo spend the week together while Jasmine is at her aunt’s. Paulo runs up Mike’s phone bill talking to her, and Mike gets in trouble.

• December 31: Ten Seconds to Midnight
  • Augustus and Lucy: Augustus leaves his parents in a drunken stupor and goes for a walk.
    
    Lucy’s family discusses what is best for her and agrees that she should leave Roseville High. Lucy walks in and feels powerless as other people decide her future.
    
    She goes out and climbs onto a rooftop. Augustus spots her and runs up, afraid she is going to jump. She laughs off his concern and asks why he cares. He claims not to, but says he knows people who do. She asks why.
    
    He waits at the foot of the building for her.
  • Tess’s New Year’s party: Abbey and Kevin discuss his attendance at the party.
    
    Tess is pleased to see Rachel and Jessica, without quite picking up on Jessica’s hope of seeing Lucy.
    
    Mike’s friends marvel at his blue scarf.
    
    Tess and Paulo discuss Jasmine. Paulo admits to being in love with someone else and knowing what he has to do.
    
    Mike receives a New Year’s kiss text from Sandy.
    
    Jasmine arrives, and she and Paulo agree that it is best to break up. Their agreement is a relief, but Jasmine is hurt when she realizes there is someone else. At midnight they kiss before going their separate ways.

  Paulo slips backstage to find Lucy, and Sue begrudgingly directs him to her dressing room. He starts explaining his concern over her absence, how glad he is to see her, and how much he likes her.   Paulo returns to his seat, kindly saved by Daisy next to Jasmine. Daisy doesn’t know about their breakup. Jasmine knows Paulo is returning from Lucy’s room and goes to sit elsewhere.
  
  The show goes on. Mike and Lucy play estranged siblings, with his character tasked with rescuing hers. During the performance, Mike thinks of Lucy asking him about marriage as small children.
  
  After the show, Mike talks to Lucy about trying to start over. Rachel, Jasmine, David, Abbey, Paulo, Daisy, Madison, and much of the track team attend the performance.
  
  A producer tries to recruit Lucy for a music career. She turns him down.

• Lucy’s suicide attempt: After the play, Lucy jumps from a roof. Augustus finds her and calls 911. She is afraid of whom he is calling, apparently thinking of Alejandro.

• Breaking Up: At school, the kids discuss the play and Lucy’s rejection of the producer’s offer. Miss Amalu announces that Lucy will no longer attend Roseville High.
  
  After school, Sue, Mike, Paulo, David, Daisy, and Abbey go to Lucy’s house to check on her. Jordan slams the door in their faces. Paulo climbs to Lucy’s bedroom and finds it empty. Distraught, he yells at Daisy.
  
  Jordan walks down the street, and Mike follows. Jordan blames him and breaks down in tears, afraid of losing his little sister.
  
  The penny drops for Mike. He takes a bus to the hospital and sees Lucy’s mother and Sam talking to the emergency room receptionist. Lily tells him he shouldn’t be there and that Lucy should be out in about a week. Yashy bids him farewell.
  
  Mike leaves and wrestles with his guilt, remembering Lucy and their friendship. He breaks down outside the hospital.

• Leaving Home: Blur learns Yashy, Lily, and Chirpy are leaving and tells Mike he can’t cope without them.
  
  Mike sits under the tree. Paulo finds him, punches him, and breaks down over losing his chance to tell Lucy he loves her. Mike comforts him.
  
  Everyone struggles with Lucy’s departure in their own way.
  
  Walking home, Paulo runs into Rachel and finds comfort in her bed. Abbey and Daisy watch a movie. Sue cries over her play script. David has consolation cake. Lucy’s family cries. Augustus sits alone on the roof.
  
  Mike returns home to find Blur gone. He talks to Sandy about that, without letting on that anything else is wrong.

• Study Buddy: Sue grills Mike about his part in Lucy’s departure, and he admits to being “reckless”. Tess grills him about the scarf she gives him.
  
  Rachel crawls into Paulo’s lap to tutor him in math, and Jasmine walks in. She considers leaving, but Sue and Mike do their best to defuse the tension and persuade her to stay.
  
  After the study party, Paulo talks to Jasmine. She says her feelings for him are real, but she now recognizes his immaturity and is glad their relationship is over.

• Safe Boundaries: End of midterms: Midterms end. Abbey and Daisy are triumphant; Paulo is suffering.
  
  On their way to Abbey’s after school, Tess makes some innuendos. At his house, Abbey and Daisy make out until he pulls back. They consider where their relationship is going and decide to get protection. A very awkward conversation with Janet follows.

• January 17: Jordan turns 17.

• Lucy’s expected discharge: Lucy’s hospital stay draws toward its expected end, before her stay with her aunt.

• Safe Boundaries: Getting protection: At school the next day, Daisy anticipates buying condoms. She asks Paulo about losing his virginity and where to get protection. He doesn’t love the conversation.
  
  After school, Abbey and Daisy walk to the pharmacy and split up. Daisy picks up the condoms and runs into Augustus, who awkwardly goes elsewhere after un-stealing something, and Mike.
  
  At Daisy’s house, she and Abbey cannot agree on who should keep the box and decide they don’t need it after all. Abbey leaves it on Paulo’s doorstep.

• Critical Hit: The art gallery: Sue is frustrated with Paulo and David’s childish antics at the gallery and tries to police their behavior. She is struggling to connect with the art herself.
  
  When everyone else pays to enter an upstairs exhibit, Paulo reluctantly follows, insecure after overhearing Sue and Mike talk about him bringing David’s grades down.
  
  Upstairs, he is unimpressed. He and Sue fight: she says she comes up to escape him, he insults her play, and she suggests even Lucy can’t hold his attention. Neither connects with the art around them, and both feel empty.

  • Rachel turns 17: Rachel appears at school with birthday balloons and invites Paulo, along with anyone he wants to bring, to her Saturday party.
    
    Daisy considers what to wear with Abbey. David proposes making it a celebration of his birthday too.

    David gives Paulo a rose, which he wears. A teary Rachel finds Paulo in the hall to thank him for the note and rose. She is flattered by his jealousy of Matt. They clear up Daisy’s involvement, and Rachel makes it clear that Paulo is the only guy she wants to see right now. She tells him Matt is gay.

• Locker prank: A prank involving lockers sends Katie into a meltdown. Sue witnesses it.

• Local Area: Stacy’s secret: After school, Mike takes the bus with Stacy to work on a group project. He tells her that her anonymous eighth-grade love letters are sweet. She denies sending them, but appreciates knowing he doesn’t find them laughable.
  
  At her house, he discovers her secret: she plays MMORPGs. She is ashamed and doesn’t want anyone to know, but he is interested. She shows him the basics and tells him about playing with Sue, Abbey, and Amaya. He promises to keep her secret.
  
  At home, Mike makes a cute girl avatar and greets his friends online. After they sign off, he joins a public server, where other players mistake him for a girl and make unwelcome advances.
  
  At school, he tells Sue and Amaya about it, and Paulo laughs. Mike keeps Stacy’s secret, though.

• Abbey and Daisy get ice cream: Abbey chases down an ice cream truck for Daisy, but shuts her out at his front door.

  • April 16: Paulo turns 16: Rodrigo makes him breakfast, Rachel and his friends supply balloons, and Paulo interviews at Burger-Tron. Good news: he lands the job!
  • Paulo’s new job: After a productive study session, Mike, Daisy, and Tess head to Burger-Tron and discover Paulo working there. He asks Tess to borrow one of her father’s cars and help teach him to drive, but she turns him down.
  • Paulo drives with Rachel: Paulo asks Rachel for help practicing, and she happily agrees. She takes him to the empty drive-in theater. Rachel apologizes for the start of their relationship, and Paulo acknowledges how unfair his constant prioritizing of Lucy is to her. Emotions are happening.

• Molly shows up crying: After school, Paulo mocks Abbey as he walks home with Daisy. She tries to reassure Abbey that “it’s not a big deal”.
  
  Molly shows up in tears. Abbey tells Daisy he would rather deal with it alone.

• Test Drive: While driving with Rachel, Paulo offers Mike a ride for the joy of not giving it to him.

• Fight at Burger-Tron: Abbey mixes up Daisy’s order, and Paulo corrects it while mocking him. Daisy calls the correction thoughtful, sparking a fight with Abbey about her habit of taking Paulo’s side. Abbey suggests she would let Paulo do anything to her, and she slaps him. • Scenic Route: Hiking trip: Tess organizes a day at the park to spend more time with her friends before graduation and help Abbey and Daisy find their pace again. It is a little bumpy: Daisy hurts her ankle, and Abbey gets left behind taking photos. Paulo and Daisy talk about their plans after graduation. Everyone reunites for a pleasant picnic. At home, Tess contemplates her own next chapter and a college acceptance letter.

• May 5: Molly turns 12.

• James starts work: James starts at Burger-Tron. Paulo thinks he’s cute.

  • At school: Rachel asks Paulo to junior prom. At lunch, Paulo laments his limited wardrobe. Memories of the previous year’s prom leave Mike, Abbey, and Daisy awkward. Augustus lurks.
    
    After cheer practice, Daisy is cleaning the messy gym when Augustus approaches, asking how she is and insisting his intent at the carnival is only to kiss her. She tells him even that is too far. He starts to suggest spending time together, then backtracks and turns to leave. Daisy stops him to say he needs help, but she cannot be the one to provide it.
  • Junior prom: Paulo and Rachel travel to prom in a limo with Jessica, Tiff, Jordan, and Matt. Tiff ditches Jordan, who asks Paulo for romantic advice. The evening goes well.
    
    Matt asks Paulo to drive home. Jessica feels sick, and Rachel stays with her, splitting the group in the parking lot.
    
    On the drive home, another vehicle strikes them.

• Trapped: Reflecting: Augustus delivers groceries to an ungrateful Alejandro and Toby. A white, blue-eyed cat on TV reminds Alejandro of Confrontation. He asks what Augustus is doing about Mike and Lucy. Augustus says Lucy is gone and he doesn’t know where, sending Alejandro into a rage. Alejandro slams him against the wall and punches him before Augustus makes his exit.
  
  Augustus sits on a rooftop and considers his circumstances, glad that Melanie and Lucy escape the mess.

• Boy Toy: Paulo’s sexuality crisis: Daisy dotes on Paulo after the accident, much to Abbey’s annoyance. Paulo kisses Abbey on the forehead and tells a surprised Mike about it. Increasingly self-conscious about his sexuality, Paulo lashes out at Matt when he comes to invite him on a beach trip. Rachel is dismayed. Paulo stays distracted and on edge.

She and Paulo have a lovely day, getting her book signed by an admired author and seeing the voice actors for a childhood show. Then they run into Abbey, Mike, Sue, and Stacy, most in full cosplay as their online-game characters.
  
  Abbey follows Paulo to the bathroom and strikes his neck, briefly cutting off his air. He warns Paulo to stay away from Daisy and leaves. Mike finds a rattled Paulo, who lies about Abbey’s involvement.
  
  Paulo says he is leaving and lets the others head to Sue’s panel. Daisy catches up with him and has her mother drive them to her house, where she gives him a power saber from their childhood show. After he goes home, she discovers the keychain he buys her of the character she cosplays.

  They spend the afternoon and evening shopping, playing at the arcade, and hanging out in his room. There are ups and downs.
  
  Since school begins, Paulo keeps asking about Mike’s relationship, worried by how down he is over Sandy’s silence. After the visit, they talk on the phone. Mike is elated.

• September 24: Love Again
  • Morning and class: Daisy excitedly talks about her birthday, but Paulo pointedly ignores her and flirts with another girl. Madison gives him a piece of her mind about his treatment of Rachel.
    
    At homeroom, the group discovers Lucy is back. Her friends embrace her. Mike hovers awkwardly at a distance and loses his nerve when he tries to approach after class.
  • Lunchtime with Lucy: Paulo calls Lucy to the table, but she declines, saying she isn’t hungry and wants to walk. He persists until Sue heads him off, to Lucy’s gratitude. Paulo lashes out at Mike, blaming him for Lucy’s refusal to join them.
    
    Daisy defends Mike. When Paulo snaps at her, Abbey demands an apology. Paulo asks whether Abbey intends to teach him another lesson and reveals the convention attack. Daisy is aghast and asks how bad it is. Abbey breaks up with her and storms off; Jasmine invites him to sit with her.
    
    Outside, Lucy finds Augustus and hugs him with great feeling. She realizes he doesn’t graduate with his class and smacks him. He explains that Toby’s demands keep him from enough classes to pass. Lucy declares that she will fight for him.

    Rachel talks to Paulo about his feelings for other girls, putting on a tough face about the end of their romance and shedding a tear behind his back.

• September 25: After You: After some homework, Paulo walks Lucy to the carnival and catches her up on their friends, telling her how much she is missed.
  
  They talk about their hookup on the night of the play, with plenty of complicated feelings. Lucy makes it clear that her plan to leave is what prompts her to sleep with him.
  
  She convinces him to attend Daisy’s birthday party.

• Test Dummy: Augustus helps Jordan prepare for the SATs.

• Moments Apart: Daisy turns 16: Jasmine brings Abbey to Daisy’s sixteenth birthday party. He intends to drop off a gift and leave, but awkward timing from Daisy’s mother results in him staying. Paulo also attends. Abbey tries to keep his animosity in check, especially through Daisy’s lengthy conversation with Paulo.

• September 29: PDA: Madison sees Lucy in the hallway and has some choice words that reveal plenty of her own insecurities. They fall on a deaf ear. Jessica hears, though.

• One-Track Mind: The track team watches Mike slam Paulo’s face into the lunch table. James is home sick and misses the drama.

• September 30: High Expectations: Sandy still hasn’t replied to Mike’s distressed texts from September 25.
  
  Mike is in a foul mood at lunch and makes a snide comment. Paulo encourages him to open up. When Mike ignores him, Paulo snatches his phone and says his real friends won’t ignore him like Sandy. Mike smashes his face into the table.
  
  Sue checks on Mike, but he shuts her out too and screams at her when she asks about Sandy. She refuses to accept that treatment and walks away.
  
  Paulo heads outside with a bloody nose and finds Lucy laughing with Augustus. He immediately throws a punch, which Lucy blocks. Hurt that Lucy prefers Augustus’s company to his and their friends’, he asks why she comes back if she doesn’t want to be their friend. He leaves in tears.
  
  Daisy finds him in the hall later, and they talk about the day. Paulo withholds that Augustus is the one he sees with Lucy.

• Mutual Assurance: Paulo apologizes to Mike on the walk home from school.

October

• Escape Route: Augustus turns 18: Lucy brings Augustus a cupcake and is unsettled by calls from Toby or Alejandro.

• It’s All in the Mind: After taekwondo, Lucy walks home and runs into Sue and Amaya. Sue tries to apologize about the play and Mike, and Lucy reassures her. Mike skulks in the bushes until Sue calls him out. Daisy follows them back from the convenience store too. When she suggests Mike and Lucy mend fences, Lucy drops the news that Augustus is living with her into the conversation like a bomb. Daisy’s jealousy and insecurity escalate matters. Sue tries to persuade Lucy back to the table and is rebuffed. Lucy leaves, and Sue and Amaya make their own awkward exit. Mike admits to Daisy that Sandy hasn’t texted him in weeks.

• October 19: Fair Game: Madison turns 18 with a bowling-alley celebration. Paulo wrestles with his sexuality.

• Sugar Substitute: While studying with Matt, Jordan reveals that Paulo hits on him in the bathroom during Madison’s party.

• October 31: Witch Hunt: Sue coaxes Lucy out trick-or-treating. Lucy brings Augustus as a deterrent to her old friend group.

• October 31: Witch Hunt: Augustus proves only partly effective as a deterrent. Daisy and David cross the divide, and Paulo brings Mike into the fold. Mike’s relationship problems and foul attitude toward Lucy bleed into the evening. Paulo leaves Sandy a nasty voicemail asking her to treat Mike better. She calls back, and Mike pretends everything is fine.

• November 1: College Material: Lucy, Jordan, Augustus, Daisy, and Abbey take the SATs at the same location. Everyone but Abbey stops at Burger-Tron afterward. Paulo isn’t planning on college, but gets encouragement to seek a better job in summer.

    After school, he dozes off and dreams of Sandy. His ringing phone wakes him, but he is disappointed to find Paulo on the line. They fight about his relationship.
    
    Mike finally reaches Sandy, who breaks up with him and reveals her love for her hairdresser, Francis.
    
    Mike leaves home for solace and encounters Lucy. She lifts his spirits, and he kisses her.
  • Mike and Sandy reconcile: Mike answers Sandy’s return call after coming home from the park. She asks for another chance, and they resume their relationship.
  • The fallout: At school the next day, Mike is absorbed in Sandy’s texts. Daisy and Paulo are happy for him, but Lucy runs out distraught. Mike follows her.

  The screening goes wrong when fans expecting subtitles object to the dub and get the film restarted.

• Double Down: Mike is sad about Sandy. Jordan and Lucy get Augustus to hang out with the seniors, although he is worried about her. Mike and Daisy discuss relationships, and kiss, in the library. Paulo walks Lucy home and encourages her to spend time with their friends, offering to cut Mike off on her say-so. The conversation only worsens, ending in slapping and screaming. Mike cheers Paulo up.

• Track Meet: Mike and Sandy text and talk. Paulo worries that Mike isn’t eating. Mike apologizes to Sue. James recruits Mike for track. Paulo and Daisy watch the meet. Mike thinks about Lucy.

• December 21: Link Play: Mike goes to the mall with James and the track team. They encounter Lucy at the arcade, and Mike apologizes. He tells Sandy about most of the day. She says she may be able to visit for Valentine’s Day and wants to show her commitment.

• December 26: Good Enough: At work, James is excited about the movie with Mike, and Paulo gets jealous. Daisy stops by Burger-Tron, and she and Paulo discuss jealousy and unattainable people. David plans to spy on Mike and James’s date. Daisy is jealous of Paulo’s romantic entanglements.

• December 27: Date Night: James and Mike go to the movies. Afterward, James kisses him, and they discuss their relationship. David, Daisy, and Paulo appear at the park. David tries to hype Paulo up to James. Paulo races Mike for James’s attention, but David is the one James notices and recruits for track. Daisy leaves upset. Mike and Paulo talk, and Paulo resolves to check on her.

January

• January 4: Sue turns 17.

• January 17: Jordan turns 18.

• Jessica’s play: Jessica’s play is performed. A perfectly harmless bit of theater, surely. David, Madison, Rachel, Jordan, Matt, and Tiff attend, with Sue likely in the audience too.

• Seeing Stars: Lucy has bad dreams. Her mother and Augustus worry. Paulo asks her about Daisy. Mike goes out at lunch with James and David.

• Play fallout: Jessica’s play causes friction in her friend group.

• Rain Check: Lucy checks on Daisy and brings her to Burger-Tron. Emotions run high, and Paulo tells Daisy how he feels.

• Review Session: Daisy and Paulo study and agree to keep their relationship from Abbey.

• Third Wheel: Daisy and Paulo want to keep their relationship from Abbey, but Daisy also wants everyone else to know they are dating. Most aren’t surprised. Abbey lends Paulo a book.

• Second String: At track, Mike struggles with former admirers moving on. David discovers Paulo and Daisy are dating. At home, Mike’s parents are fighting.

• First-Degree Burn: Lucy has bad dreams. Augustus asks Mike to stay inside during lunch. Mike doesn’t.

• Participation Trophy: David helps reframe Jessica’s play for her friends. Sue is hurt by the reception of her own play.

• Line in the Sand
  • Montage: Mike’s relationship with Sandy runs through a series of unfulfilling calls as he takes care of Chris and spends lunches with David and James.
    
    Lucy’s bad dreams persist.
  • Augustus confronts Mike: Augustus antagonizes Mike in front of James and David, invoking his treatment of Lucy until he lashes out physically. Mike claims Lucy leads him on, and she kicks him. David proposes a solution: Lucy returns to the table and leaves Mike outside. James follows David in.
  • Lucy returns to the table: Augustus sits with the seniors. Paulo worries about Mike, but Lucy reminds him of his promise to cut Mike off on her say-so.

• Made Fresh: At school: Paulo and Abbey make plans. Paulo checks on Mike. Daisy and Paulo discuss Mike and Lucy. Jordan invites them on a double date.

• Made Fresh: Date day: As Tiff leaves the double date early, Daisy and Paulo try to make Jordan see that she isn’t interested and that he should look elsewhere. Paulo reveals Matt’s crush on him.
  
  Afterward, Paulo and Daisy struggle with the pace of their relationship: he wants to take things slowly, and she wants a kiss.
  
  Jordan arrives home to college rejection letters. Augustus receives acceptances.

February

• Paulo plans to drive Molly: Paulo agrees to take Molly on a trip nearly an hour away.

• February 11: Rachel turns 18.

• February 14: Proposed visit from Sandy: Sandy hopes to visit Roseville for Valentine’s Day.

• February 22: David turns 16.
