Abbey’s house is a two-storey family home in Roseville where Abbey lives with his little sister Molly and their adoptive parents, Janet and Kevin. It sits within walking distance of Roseville High School,[1] and most of Abbey’s family story plays out inside it. The house he and Molly lived in as small children with their birth mother Charlotte is a separate location entirely.

Description

From the street it is a tidy suburban house with pale green siding, shuttered multi-paned windows, and flowering bushes planted on either side of the porch.[2][3] A “WELCOME” mat sits at the front door, a tall conifer stands in the yard, and the place gets dressed up for the holidays with a wreath in December.[1][4]

Inside, the staircase comes straight down to the front door, with the kitchen close by.[1][5] The living room holds a couch, an end table with a lamp, and a framed wedding photo of Janet and Kevin on the wall.[6] There is also a round table big enough to seat six, and a game table by a curtained window where Connect Four gets played.[7][2]

Upstairs, Abbey’s room has a desk, a bed under a curtained window, and a green upholstered armchair.[8] Molly’s room is pink from the walls to the bedding, with a white hutch desk decorated with greeting cards.[9]

The backyard is big and fenced, with thick grass, a tree, and a swing set. Abbey does his schoolwork out there whenever the weather allows, and Mike found it cozy enough to wish he had one of his own.[10][11]

History

The house debuts in Rising Temperature, when Abbey brings Mike and Paulo home to help them with an essay. Mike learns in the entry hall that Abbey is adopted, and Janet fills in the rest of the story while baking cookies in the kitchen.[1][10] In the backyard, Abbey’s pent-up anger over how Mike treats Daisy turns into a fistfight, which a tearful Molly breaks up.[13]

It is also where Abbey takes his first steps toward getting help. In Moving On, he comes home after deciding to see a counselor and takes Janet up on her offer to talk, while Daisy watches their hug through the living room window.[6] In Invitation, he turns down Tess’s vacation invite from his room because of his appointment, and Daisy later shows up on his doorstep to drag him along to see everyone off.[14][15]

Abbey and Daisy share their first kiss on the front path in New Beginnings. Daisy walks him home, and Abbey fumbles for words until she demands he stand by his accidental “I love you”, then kisses him herself.[4][16] Molly later pops up behind Abbey’s desk chair to ask whether the two of them are getting married.[17]

On Halloween in Mischief Night, the gang carries a drugged, unconscious Mike here because, as Daisy points out, “Abbey’s house is nearby!”[18] Mike sleeps it off in Abbey’s bed while everyone sorts candy at the round table downstairs, right up until Molly helps herself to his tainted candy corn and collapses on top of him.[7]

Most of At Loose Ends takes place here. Molly keeps a wicker basket of yearly presents for her and Abbey’s birth mother, Charlotte, and Abbey resolves over Christmas break to finally track her down.[9][19] Janet takes the search onto her own shoulders, telling Abbey “It’s not your responsibility. It’s mine.” before sending him off to Tess’s party under the mistletoe.[20][21]

When Abbey comes home at night with the news that Charlotte has died, he and Molly hug in silence.[22] Janet kisses him goodnight at his bedside, and Abbey tells her, “You and Kevin really have given us a normal life.”[23]

Abbey dispenses first-aid advice into his cordless phone from the green armchair during Mike’s babysitting crisis in Adult Supervision.[24] On New Year’s Eve in Ten Seconds to Midnight, Kevin plays Connect Four with Molly before dinner, and at midnight Janet finds her asleep at the kitchen table, having lost her bet to stay up.[2][25]

In Safe Boundaries, post-exam kissing in Abbey’s bedroom turns into Daisy’s panicked speech about taking precautions just in case. Molly overhears the whole thing and reports it verbatim to Janet downstairs.[8][26][5] Janet rattles the doorknob and settles the matter through the door: “YOU BETTER BE TALKING ABOUT BASEBALL!!”[27]

The house’s most recent appearance is a flashback in Golden Hour, in which Abbey tells Daisy at his front door that he would prefer to study alone and shuts it, leaving her confused on the path. It was an early sign of the withdrawal that later damaged their relationship.[3]

Residents

A round table piled high with candy, ringed by an eager crowd of trick-or-treaters at Abbey’s house.[28]

Four people live here, and no visit ever escapes Molly or Janet’s notice.

  • Abbey was adopted by Janet and Kevin roughly four years before the house’s first appearance, by Janet’s own count.[10]
  • Molly is Abbey’s little sister, owner of the pinkest room in the house and its most reliable interrupter of tender moments.[9][17][26]
  • Janet is the family’s adoptive mother, a dog. She bakes, listens on the couch, and enforces bedroom-door decorum at considerable volume.[10][6][27]
  • Kevin is the adoptive father, a cat, first seen loosening his tie on his way in from work. He tends to be the one minding Molly while everyone else is busy.[1][22][2]

Trivia

Abbey looks over Paulo’s assignment out on the backyard grass.[29]
  • Janet and Kevin were originally written as Abbey’s foster parents. Veronica retconned this to full adoption in the commentary of the house’s debut page, insisting “They’re his parents!”[1]
  • Molly calls Janet “Jana”. According to Veronica, it’s Molly’s version of “Mom”, and she adds that Abbey, an inherently formal guy, may eventually be the one to stop calling his parents by their first names.[21][30]
